Atma-Sphere in CO?
@cal3713It sounds like these amps were used- any idea what version they are? The current version is Mk3.3 (older versions can be updated with full warranty reactivation).
SET v. Pushpull
So much depends on topology!*Some* pushpull amps have crossover distortion problems but most do not. What push pull amps often do have trouble with is the so-called 'first watt'. Many do have higher distortions in that area, but its usually not cr...
My Amp is Broken - Not Sure What to Do - Any Recommendations?
Hm, The output section is right out of OnSemi's application notes. Devices like this give me the willies, since so much relies on them. If it were me, I would be tempted to test the transistor portions to see if they are still good, and if so, per...
Hypex N core module
A statement George loves to repeat without practical data to back it up with. The switching frequency is several 100sKHz at the very least and the output filter does not filter it out entirely. Regardless the filter does not have the effect at aud...
Tube and SS pairs
If you were to build a system from the ground up, would you get a SS amp to mate with a tube pre amp or a tube amp to mate with a SS preamp? If you have to have some solid state, then I think it better that you get a tube preamp. The issue is tha...
AtmaSphere + Ayre
Not if its affected by the volume control.
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
As an amplifier designer I can tell you that many speaker designers have very little grasp on the relationship that has to exist between the amp and speaker. If the speaker is harder to drive, the amp makes more distortion. In particular if the amp...
Experiences moving from high-power to lower-power system
One thing I can tell you is that you don't have to sacrifice anything by getting more efficient and easier to drive speakers! I've yet to hear anything with more resolution and my speakers go down flat to 20Hz. The are 98 db, so I don't need a lot...
Unity Gain Tube Buffer - Choosing the Right Location
If you have a buffer that can also convert to balanced, why do you need a TVC? Can't you use the volume control in the buffer? If yes, it will work better if the TVC is omitted.
CDs Vs LPs
I have LPs pressed in the early 1950s that play just fine too. One example (Benny Goodman) is 65 years old and still plays fine. The Library of Congress did an archival study in the mid 1980s that suggested that laminated media like CDs would last...
Phono cable advice.
The reason you can make an unshielded cable work in a phono situation is that the cartridge is a pretty low impedance. Its hard for radiated noise to impinge the cable when such a low source impedance is present.A further advantage is that unshiel...
Why do people buy preamps if they can directly connect amp to stereo source/phone/PC/tv?
For those that like tube coloration (or distortion. for you detractors), messing around with tubes is a joy.  For those that prefer more sonic honesty, you will need to spend considerably more for tubes and may well find sonic bliss with a less...
My Amp is Broken - Not Sure What to Do - Any Recommendations?
So- the chip can't be bypassed? If its a fire concern, couldn't a thermal fuse be installed?*IF* that's all that's wrong, sounds like a simple matter to sort out, if all that is needed is to just get it running again.
Tube question: any sonic difference in 6SN7 vs 6H30 vs 6H80 in the amp's signal position?
The 6SN7 is a better sounding tube as its easier to find examples that have lower microphonics. IOW the 6SN7 was designed for audio. BTW the 6C33 power tube has been out of production and the plant that made them dismantled for about 19 years.
Solder, Lead free or leaded?
RoHS does not ban leaded solder. To meet RoHS, the product has to not have more than a certain percentage of lead.Leaded solder works better than most non-leaded solders in most applications. A eutectic solder is more desirable as it is much easie...
