SL1200GAE New Tonearm
did you position the arm on Norberts table just so the wire would miss the hinge? I was wondering about why the arm is shifted to the left so much?If I recall correctly we made the arm board for his machine but Tri of Triplanar actually did the ...
What is the fascination?
No, it was never the best. But when it first came out in the '60s, it was a whole lot better than much of the competition. ?? The Empire was better, the Lenco was better, Thorens, the Garrard 301, Dual, Miracord, even some of the higher end BSRs.....
Solid State vs. Tubes - What if Transistors came first?
Tube amps are pretty sensitive to power cords too...
Is there actually a difference?
Just for those unaware, SITs and VFETs are just power JFETs. SIT stands for Static Induction Transistor. VFETs are SIT devices. Power JFETs are a different beast:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JFETThere's a lot less info on SITs:https://en.wikipedi...
Solid State vs. Tubes - What if Transistors came first?
most never used snubber circuits to deal with the fact that diodes ring.Actually its the power transformer that rings, which is why snubbing the rectifiers is often not that effective. HEXFRED rectifiers help, since it is the capacitance of the re...
If aftermarket premium power cords work, why won’t short runs of premium XLR cables work?
Whatever boxes are on the cable is not really relevant (and FWIW, they don't really serve a purpose either). If the equipment supports the balanced standard, then you can use extensions all you like. If the equipment does not, the results are less...
Let's talk power cords
OSHA?Occupational Safety and Health Administration.Between them and UL and also national electrical codes, essentially solid core power cords are illegal. So if one makes a fire, electrical hazard or any such, it won't be covered by homeowner's or...

If you position the arm correctly, yes, you can use the lid. You can't do it with the 12" though :)
Empire Turntable Parts
We built a whole new plinth for the 208 that is machined out of solid aluminum and has exactly the same lines although that big hole beneath the platter isn't there. @falmgren, are you sure the new lamp was good? Did you test the old one?
What is the fascination?
Years ago one of my employees picked up an Empire 208 at a garage sale, and got it sounding good enough that for fun, I sought one of my own, which I found for $35.00 (good luck trying to do that now!). I threw out the arm and installed my SME 5 o...
Serious Passive Preamp question
I've seen active preamps beat a passive every time. Less coloration, better dynamic impact, more extension. Less sensitivity to interconnect cables.A lot depends on the active line stage though. Some of them outright suck, and then passive sounds ...
Is the Eico HF 81 really that good?
Eico tended to use a lot of ceramic disk caps in places they should not have- such as coupling caps. But their transformers were pretty good. So if you replaced the coupling caps (and of course have the power supplies rebuilt) their stuff sounds j...
Is there actually a difference?
Why doesn’t someone else use this approach??No-one makes SITs. They can be a bit fragile too!I'm not sure input capacitance is an insurmountable issue. I'm not one of those who automatically cringes at feedback. I'm not either, but one thing shou...
Let's talk power cords
There ARE solid core aftermarket power cords available commercially. Yes- I'm sure there are. But they don't meet OSHA regulations. Has anyone been able to explain why power cable would make a difference? Yes. See the first page of this thread.
Phono preamp/turntable connection question.
just wondering if balanced cable is an "upgrade" if no other component in the system is balanced as well.If you have an SUT, then that can convert from balanced to single-ended no worries. Otherwise, no benefit.
