Can we finally put Reel to Reel out of its misery? Put it to rest people. We should also note that is a myth that reel to reel heads wear. While I agree with a lot of what you posted, its a simple fact that heads wear- I've replaced many of them in my time, on cassette, consumer RTR and pro machines as well.
Looking for preamp which is good at BOTH single-ended AND balanced output That I believe would be a claim difficult to prove….@antigrunge2 I did and actually its not. Most audiophiles have recordings, especially those made in the 1950s, that demonstrate that cables must not be as heavily colored as the high end cable in...
SET vs OTL Ralph, are you able to address my comparison between Graaf GM20 and Wavac EC300b in the same way? I am not yet convinced that the issues raised by @pani aren‘t valid in the same way. From what I can see of the Graaf front end circuit, while it is...
Looking for preamp which is good at BOTH single-ended AND balanced output My equipment is Audio Research. It supports both single ended and balanced. The designs are balance, ARC recommends using balanced. Just for the record the ARC preamps do not support the balanced standard even though they are balanced.
SET vs OTL I have heard the exact same distortion attribute when I compared:1. Audionote SET to Leben push-pull2. Ayon Crossfire II SET to Triton II push-pull3. Trafomatic Experience SET to Traformatic 6550 pushpull4. Wavac EC-300b SET to Canary audio 300b p...
SET vs OTL "it feels like a one sound" I get exactly what he means. This is what I recognized when I got my SET and listened compared to my otherwise very push pull amplifiers. Funny - people describe that about our stuff too. As best I can make out, what ...
preamp vs amp: relative effect on sound? Most designers of solid state amplifiers seem to strive for minimal or even zero feedback. Feedback is treated as a negative, something that should be avoided at all cost. Your remark seems to suggest sufficient amounts of feedback are required...
SET vs OTL BUT!! for an OTL not to be hindered IN ANY WAY at all by todays "better sounding speakers loads" that have NOT had "their sound compromised" (because they were designed "firstly" too give a very easy load), is a big ask. There are plenty of them o...
Looking for preamp which is good at BOTH single-ended AND balanced output @ccheung Just so you know, balanced and single-ended are incompatible. So there likely isn't a preamp good at both.In single-ended circuits, the ground connection is part of the signal. In balanced circuits ground is ignored. The output of a bala...
KLH model 9 electrostatic Speakers Today You would use a High power Class A amp with a lot of heat sink or an Atma-Sphere amp.M60's would be perfect! How much power is the atmasphere M60?@While the power of the M-60 is fine (about 60 to 80 watts) the high frequency impedance will c...
Tubes for Magnepan’s. Since someone got their panties in a twist over my last comment, I will just quietly enjoy the misinformation being spread here. Carry on.@secretguy If you had a post removed, its not just that someone got upset. The moderators don't care about...
preamp vs amp: relative effect on sound? There are too many variables. You can't lump all solid state in the same basket; some are harsh and bright no matter what you do. The brightness and harshness is the result of distortion; the ear assigns a tonality to all forms of distortion. In t...
SET vs OTL I have used a Graaf Gm20 for about 10 years before upgrading to a Wavac Ec300b some 10 years ago. In short, there is no going back: while the Graaf had twice the stated output power, making that power useful was challenging: using autoformers t...
Excellent Speakers for Classical Music - $2,000 USD Budget Don't worry about if the speaker is good for classical. What makes a speaker good will be equal for jazz, classical, rock or what have you. No-one's figured out a way to make electronics (including speakers) better for a particular genre. This is ...
Shorting Amplifier Output That might be reasonable depending on what a new one might cost. |
