how can low watt tube amps drive speakers with higher power requirements
My favorite  design is a pair of NOS 300B tubes operated in single-ended, ultra-linear mode. About 15 watts RMS output. Funny!!! 300bs of course can't be operated in ultralinear, on account of lacking a screen grid :)
Preamp sending amp into protect
After going over some tests with Alvin, I have noticed that no matter what combination of outputs I use from the preamp(both sets of XLR outputs, both L/R channels) as long as the left channel of the amp is involved in the mix, it goes into pro...
Cary SLI-80 with one blown rectifier tube, BUT STILL WORKS just fine. How?
@noromance You'll be alright with the 600V units and you can use the 8A version rather than the 15A version!
Horn speakers , high efficiency but not “shouty”
The use of the term is definitely loose, and moreover the habitual exposition to a sound character that doesn't closely emulate live sound will easily label that which actually does, not least dynamically, as an outlier; a (more) realistically ...
Shorting Amplifier Output
Is it possible to repair, and is it worth it to repair? I'm going with yes. Whether there is someone in LA is a different matter, but I'd be a bit surprised if there wasn't, its a big town!
Looking for my Final Pair!!
Leaning Spatial Audio X3’s...talked with Clayton for about an hour!  Great guy and very knowledgeable. @dave_b Clayton will treat you right.
Looking for my Final Pair!!
Looking for my Final Pair!!You know that's funny right? because audiophiles. But seriously I've been running the Classic Audio Loudspeakers model T3 for the last 22 years and while I did get them updated, I've felt no desire to replace them. They a...
Class-D Audio USA have just released their new GaN amp at the CES
Technics with the SE-R1 have advanced it more than anyone, others to me have just gone sideways. That credit legitimately goes to Bruno Putzeys.
Cons of using main XLR/Balanced outs for subwoofer?
two of these op-amps are to buffer the signal to the tape output and level control, the remaining four for the two balanced outputs. These integrated circuits are specified as delivering high output with low noise. "Could we deduct something fr...
Merlin VSM MME Master BAM Modification
Oh of course, im on touch with him. Just wondering what people do. I do want to change slightly the tonal balance, so im curious. This speaker was designed to work with amps that had a fairly high output impedance. That might be why you’re having a...
Why would anyone want class AB amp when class A always sounds better ?
I might be off here, but class A amps don’t drive lower impedance speakers very well either. Most class A amps aren’t stable into 2 ohm loads. Krell being one Of the exceptions. The class of operation has nothing to do with what load impedance th...
Cons of using main XLR/Balanced outs for subwoofer?
Will that configuration really make a big difference? @rlb61 Did you notice a difference in the mains between not having the sub hooked up and all, and having it connected but its volume turned all the way down? If there is no difference then your...
Cons of using main XLR/Balanced outs for subwoofer?
You would run dual balanced outputs, one set to your main power amp. The other set would go to the ISO MAX units (left and right channels). Only at that point would you use RCA connections, between the ISO MAX units and your sub. So the ISO MAX un...
Cons of using main XLR/Balanced outs for subwoofer?
@cardani  If the RCA outputs are in parallel with the balanced outputs on your preamp then what you describe makes sense. If it were me I'd be using the Jensen ISO MAX subwoofer transformers to do the conversion and not use the RCA outputs of the ...
Why would anyone want class AB amp when class A always sounds better ?
Are class A amplifiers significantly harder to engineer, or they are about the same but only bring some of the well-known things (heat) with them simply because of class? Also, how does efficiency of class-A amplifiers compare with other classes ...
