Old Amps that can still Kick Butt
Most of the amps listed here will sound fine at low volume. But if you want to blast they’ll get painful. The mark of a good system is one that sounds smooth and detailed (not brightness masquerading as detail) even at high volume. The problem is ...
Tubes for Magnepan’s.
Is there a national show that highlights valve amps? No. Seems to me in the US, AXPONA and the RMAF as your best shots.
SOTA NOVA, HR-X VPI, Technics 1200G recommendations?
@lewm  I have to admit its an assumption on my part that people are playing LPs have have something other than a steady tone :)
why did my record player slow down, speed up, then go back to normal?
I actually went to play a record today, and I had to press the (electronic) buttons multiple times before it did its function. There was no speed swell, though.I am thinking that the buttons are corroded. I put myself through engineering school ...
Tubes for Magnepan’s.
why ,because they take a lot of current to drive then tube donot have the current on demand that good solid state brings , when you have a speaker goingPower (watts) is equal to voltage times current. If the amp can make the power then it also has...
Old Amps that can still Kick Butt
Circuit refinements are rare, and the effect on sonic end points that the given amplifier circuitry that is new can deliver -- is highly debatable at best. This statement is incorrect. The thing that's been plaguing amplifier design for the last 60...

They were all lifeless in comparison and all of us heard the same thing. I sold a bunch of them at Luskin’s and had I don’t know how many people complain of the way they sounded. There can be a lot of variables and especially back then, the platter...
why did my record player slow down, speed up, then go back to normal?
If this is an older turntable with variable speed, one explanation might be that the speed controls or the speed selector switch are developing corrosion. If this is so, you can expect future events and more often.Another explanation is a brief po...
Tube vs. Solid State Amplifiers
I've heard some (who are much more knowledgeable than me) say that a tube amp and solid state amp which are rated at the same output power in practice will not drive a speaker to the same level, that in selecting amplifier power levels, you wou...
Is D for Dry? Class D...
When are your Class D amps coming out? I just sold an amp and looking for a new one. We're doing limited shipping of Beta production right now. As with many things associated with the pandemic, we've run into supply side shortages that have caused ...
step up transformer noise
but the transformer produces noise through the speakers, even when the amp is turned off.I suspect this isn't true. I do suspect that the transformer is noisy, even with no load. I would use a transformer with **at least** double the capacity need...
Restored my dads R2R but no tape loop on integrated
Why tape record in 2021?With a good set of mics you can make nice recordings of real things. Or- you could make a mix tape of just what you want to hear, rather than have to listen to cuts you don't like on an LP, CD or streamed album.
Microphonic feedback?
If you tap on the amp’s tubes, does it send an impulse thru the speakers?@birdfan  You didn't answer his question! To get feedback due to microphonics the tubes would have to be pretty bad. Just tap on them as cleeds asked- you'll find which are b...
Is D for Dry? Class D...
You can argue about science but it is just thoughts in your head. What is real, is what we hear. Expectation bias is also very real. Perhaps have doing the destatic thing, measure what it does? You'd need a CD with test signals on it.

@mijostyn  You'll want to be careful using the vacuum system! I had a Sota Cosmos some years back that damaged the LP surface held against the platter pad. Dusting both sides before playing didn't fix it. Later, Sota changed the surface of the pla...
