Component grounding No no, I meant the preamp section of the integrated. It has a feature that let's you bypass the preamp section and use the output control on the DAC instead. When I did this, the hum came back. I don't know what that means, but you're right, the ...
RCA 9289 tube amplifiers Dad always favored rebuilding them with Sprague Orange Drop coupling capacitors. That is because back in those days they were the only game in town. A lot has changed since then! There is no way I'd use orange drops for any kind of rebuild or r...
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important? Is this all equal to audio? No.
Component grounding @rfprice Hm. That kind of suggests an isssue with the amp. Have you tried other amps when the preamp is in the system?
Half Speed Mastering Decca half speed mastered their classical LPs (London too). This was to avoid a resonance issue in their cutter system. Apparently it worked.
Class A amplifier alternative? I think AGD might make a class D with the sort of power you need.
Radio frequencies picked up by phono stage. FWIW this could also be occurring at the output of the phono stage. I would at least try a different set of interconnects at the output of the phono section to see if that had any effect. RFI can be really pesky. A phono section that picks it up ...
Positioning full range electrostatic speakers Because of the dipole nature of these speakers, or for any other reason, might this be an issue? None at all. Plus this allows you to run shorter speaker cables, which is a big deal when using tube amps with planar speakers of almost any kind.
Class A amplifier alternative? Just FYI, I once tried class D but the sound is very clinical, thin and sterile in my system. Class D amps are as variable as tube amps or regular solid state amps. I've heard some that are relaxed, smooth and detailed. I'd try some more before ...
Open Baffle. Why are they mostly limited to DIY? I am struck how a lot of tracks now sound very different, with instruments seeming to disappear or are playing in a different room of the studio than the rest of the band. Example the harpiscord jangling in the left channel of Van Morrison's Cypr...
Anyone try using a 5751 in place of a 12AT7? I bet he's set the circuit up to optimize it for the 5751 too.
Different Amplifiers Changing the Width of Soundstage Do amp designers voice the phase shift? You avoid phase shift either by having very wide bandwidth (in excess of 100KHz) or by having at least 35dB of feedback at 20KHz. The latter is very difficult to do BTW.
Component grounding The hum goes away when I plug the amp into the second receptacle of the wall outlet, or when I use a cheater plug to connect it to the Shunyata. This is caused by something called a ’ground loop’. Its generally a sign that some part of the system ...
Different Amplifiers Changing the Width of Soundstage Phase shift can also cause this issue. Along with the others mentioned (assuming the recording used for this is the same).
