The smoothest amp you've heard? from a sonic perspective "smooth" doesn't present itself as something I am attempting to ascertain, or looking for in a amp? I have listened to many amps, I never recall saying "that amp is so smooth". I'm not trying to sound disrespectful. I t...
Tube Power vs Solid State Power @flasd Distortion at clipping is why this myth persists. Simply put, tubes can overload quite gracefully while transistors cannot. So you can have the musical waveform briefly overload a tube amp and you may not notice. But you will if that happen...
Picking an Open Baffle speaker for 2w SET amp - plus bonus question !?! Zero feedback? Feedback is the act of taking the output voltage, attenuating it and applying it back to the input, out of phase with the incoming signal, so it can act as a correction voltage. SETs usually do not use it because they rely on the li...
Picking an Open Baffle speaker for 2w SET amp - plus bonus question !?! Not suggesting by any stretch that this is a good pairing, but from everything I have read so far and what I am experiencing with the Gallo 3.1, those Betsy or Lii Audio 8" drivers with 94dB - 97dB efficiency + my REL sub(s) should be PLENTY se...
Observation: Passion vs Obsession Music has been around as long as there have been humans. Flutes seem to have been invented tens of thousands of years ago. Drums long before that. I started my journey with piano lessons when I was 3 1/2. I also had a small suitcase record player ...
Picking an Open Baffle speaker for 2w SET amp - plus bonus question !?! @nkphoto Just so you are not going into this blind, 2 watts will simply not be enough power for Tangbands. I recommend you look into a subwoofer at least. I recently found an M&K sub on Craigslist for $150.00; if you are patient, you can find...
Why does bass have more “punch” when I stand up vs. sitting? Suggestions as to how to have the bass response while sitting as I do when standing? @lourdes Sure- you want to look into something called a Distributed Bass Array. This is a set of subwoofers that allow you to break up the standing wave that y...
The smoothest amp you've heard? I don't understand what smooth even means? Perhaps others who have posted above can help me with my (lack of) understanding?@jakesnack @david_ten Read my first post in this thread. The explanation is in the first sentence.
I'm a Dummy, Tell Me About Turntable Mats It was not intentional.@fsonicsmith I didn't get the impression is was. I just though I should point out the issue, since the 'table is quite different if you have a good arm on it. As far as the mat goes, its pretty easy to demonstrate with noth...
Why are there no tube televisions anymore? Ha! Back in the old days a few of us audiophiles in my neighborhood in fact noticed that the analog with the tube video amplifiers were better able to bring out detail. Of course, you have to have the convergence set right... Zenith and Setchell-C...
I'm a Dummy, Tell Me About Turntable Mats I can’t define tracking noise but I know it when I hear it. Except I’m not even sure of that.@lewm Make sure you turn the volume all the way down, so you can only hear the mechanical sound of the cartridge playing the vinyl. The quieter it is, the...
Phono Hum Question The ground wire is the tonearm tube amongst other things. If not grounded it will induce noise into the cartridge signal for which it is supposed to be the shield. Just ground the wire- that's what its for.
What are ways to fix speaker dips in my speaker or audio room This can be fixed at the listening position with DSP at the expense of amplifier powerIn fact you may clip the amps with ease yet not fix the problem of a loss of bass. This is because the waveform is cancelling itself out. You can put a lot of p...
Anyone try using a 5751 in place of a 12AT7? @jsbw The 12AT7 can handle a lot more current than the 5751 can. So you might run into saturation and/or a short lifespan with the latter.Another issue is bandwidth, and this plays a lot on how the feedback in the amp will behave. Feedback relies...
Amplifiers in use with big Harbeths (Mon 40 series) that work very well i guess in my own experience, there is a fairly decent correlation between large woofers such as the single 12 inchers in big harbeths and spendors with the need for amplifier damping factor and control of the driver and its significant motor s... |
