Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
I like the two following quotes together:"It sounds like Mcintosh tried to make this amp sound like tubes.Which was not a very good idea. " AND "somewhat resembles tubes (more "musical")." Personally, I would rather have music than sounds. To me a...
someone please explain direct coupled amps
Clueless and Eldartford got carried away on tube amps but in response to your question, yes indeed, nearly all SS amps are direct coupled (except McIntosh, as I said).
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
One point I want to make (I have done research in this) about bipolar vs. MOSFET is that the notion "bipolar to mosfets because of inherently better distortion characteristics" isn't quite right. Distortion (due to nonlinearity - not noise which i...
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse....
Yep, indeed. I was surprised by the XA160 too. I read the measurements first, being the EE that I am, and felt disappointed in the new big Pass. Perhaps designers aren't going for good measured performance anymore which I see as a fault. I guess I...
Aragon 4004 mk2 vs Adcom 555 mk2
A friend of mine has an Adcom 555 mk2 and he brought it over to my house a couple months ago because he wanted to hear it power my Paradigm Reference 100.2 (his stereo got piece-mealed when he moved and is still that way). He just had it checked o...
bright up "warm sound" speakers
IME, it is hard to correct sound with cables. They just don't quite do it. If you still want to try it though (cheaper than a different amp or CDP...), I like the Nordosts in general and find that they lend a more "detailed" sound (not brighter). ...
Putting a preamp on a integrated?
Do you mean physically on the unit or using only the amp section in the 6900? Physically on the unit is not a good idea because the preamp will impede convection cooling for the amp. Using only the amp section of the 6900 (which it indeed can do) ...
someone please explain direct coupled amps
It is easy: almost all amps made today are direct-coupled with means that the output transistors are directly connected to the load (speakers). This is in contrast to a (solid-state) transformer-coupled amplifier in which a transformer buffers the...
Feedback/Ideas for New Magazine?
I was reading just today in The Audio Critic about how it was stopping some of its columns and was thinking about stopping altogether in the not-so-distant future. I basically never come across anything said about this magazine which I personally ...
Mating Tube pre's with SS amps
I am looking ahead at my future systems (I love doing that) and have decided that I will do the same. I have my sights set on a McIntosh C2200 which has all the features I want and a glorious sound. I have heard it in two solid-state-amp systems (...
It's No Fun Being a Guru Anymore
People seem to like pictures better than music today. Ears go basically unfulfilled these plasma-days and few people like us notice. Different strokes....
Is Nelson's pre as good as his amp ?
balanced is better if the full design is balanced. CMRR is always greatly improved with a balanced design which is always good. That is all you need to remember.
My M20s were humbled
The first time I heard the Micro Utopias (not Be), I was amazed as well. I thought it was the expensive vinyl source that was silky but a Rega CDP still sounded fantastic. I have never forgotten those little speakers.... I will look for auditionin...
Who has experience shipping large speakers?
BAX Global has been recommended to me too for a deal that never ended up happening. Good luck - Arthur
Classe Cam200 or Ca201?
I have only read great things about the CAM 200 monoblocks. However, the CA201 may be a good place to save a little money over the CAM because I doubt the circuits are really any different between the two (their specs are identical in all regards....
