White Substance on Aja 30th Anniversary

Hey Folks,

I was waiting to play my 30th Anniversary edition of Aja on vinyl until I got the system sounding better. After recent changes I was ready to play it. I opened it and much to my surprise it has a white substance on it that has survived a VPI 16.5/VPI fluid cleaning. The picture is at http://www.audiocrazies.com/storage/AJA_30thAniversary_Imperfect.jpg .

I also have this on my mono Doors from the boxed set. Anybody know what it is and how to clean it? Enzymes?

Thanks,
Robert

Puzzling. The "fine Columbian," to my knowledge, can only be found on side one of "Gaucho."
Sounds like someone at the pressing plant was pretty excited about these pressings.

Monica might be able to tell you how to remove those stains.
Also possible is residue of the release agent used in pressing the record. A silicone based product will turn white when emulsified with water and after drying what you might see.
^^^^^^^

SOOOO tired of hearing about "release agents". Never was any, ever.

Let me guess, he heard about them on that new Internet thingy
I've seen this residue on many brand new records, most of them top shelf pressings, mostly 45s interestingly. However, I'm not sure if it's just the light in the picture the OP took, or the residue on his record is worse as it looks rather nasty compared to mine. The residue I've had were had the same pattern, but was less pronounced and you had to angle the record to actually see it well. It had absolutely no effect on the sound, and left absolutely nothing on the stylus.
i was told that the records were still hot when put into the sleeves that's what caused the discoloration...but no effect in the sound
"How does it sound? Any comparisons to an original pressing?"

No, As I said I have been afraid to play it. Don't want to gum up my stylus.

"Is it a cloak and dagger digital product?"

Not sure. Could have had digital delay in the cutting.

"Would love to hear some good news but every re release I have heard on vinyl has been a huge disappointment."

This seems to a popular position these days. I disagree. Some are quite good. The Clapton and Clapton Unplugged are very nice as is Hoffman's Rumours. I only have the 33 Rumours so far but he 45 x 2 should be here in a few days. The Friday's Music version of Close To The Edge is pretty good also.

"I also have seen this on several new records. It did line up with the inner sleeve glue joints, so I am sure it is from the sleeve. It has had no noticeable sound effect on my albums."

Thanks. I still my play it on my old Project and see if the stylus gets residue.

Hey Paanders, somebody on another board had the same thought. Amusing none the less:-)

Thanks Folks,
Robert
strange white powdery substances making squiggly lines on steely dan albums.

why is it that steely dan albums so often show residue of strange white powdery substances?

well, don, walter? or should i ask rudy in the corner?
Robob,
I also have seen this on several new records. It did line up with the inner sleeve glue joints, so I am sure it is from the sleeve. It has had no noticeable sound effect on my albums. I am also pretty sure that it not glue residue itself that has leaked out of the seams. I think it is probably a solvent that is a component of the glue that continues to offgas long after the glue has "dried" that has a visible effect on the vinyl. Maybe it could affect the durability of the vinyl in this location, but so far, I have not noticed any degradation in the sound of mine.
Hi, see this thread (11-3-08 from restock)

"There have been some problems at the RTI with a patch of inner sleeves that they received from their long-time supplier. The glue that holds the plastic in the paper sleeves leaked through the plastic and causes the white marks on the vinyl."
How does it sound? Any comparisons to an original pressing?

Can we really trust a record company these days even if they say it was cut from original master tapes? I mean who's checking?

Would love to hear some good news but every re release I have heard on vinyl has been a huge disappointment.
This is most distressing.

Some folks are apparently having trouble with the link to the pic so here it is with the markup tags:

This is also discussed with another pic here:

Also in an older thread on this forum. Nobody has admitted to being able to remove it. Interesting Acoustic Sounds still has some. I may try to find my receipt and see if I bought it from them. Not only is Aja one of my all time favorite albums, this version is a collectable. I suppose I need to open the remaining sealed collectables I have to inspect them.

Bummed!

Thanks for all the response, I appreciate it,
Robert

The glue thing sounds a bit hokie IMO.

YMMV
Similar marks appear on my copy of the same record and cleaning had no affect. Happily, they have no sonic impact, and the record plays fine. Nice album.
Thanks for the replies. Someone elsewhere had the glue reply so maybe that is it. I am afraid of it gumming up my stylus.

What would I search for? Music Matters?

Have a fun eve,
Robert
I've seen this before.

Some of my early Music Matter's LP's have it. They deemed it glue from the record sleeve. The marks I have on my lps don't seem to interfere with the sound. Almost like the glue bleached the black from the vinyl slightly. It seems to be on the surface and not deep into the groove...MM's change to different sleeves and the issue is gone. (maybe do a search, a number of folks posted about it 2 yrs or so ago

I'd leave it, you might do more damage than good...
It looks like glue has leaked from the folds of the inner sleeve to me as the marks are 3 straight lines. I can't see how you would remove it without ruining the record to be honest. I've never seen this before in over 30 years of playing records
