Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

Ah yeah, the debut Butterfield album! That was a game-changer, having a huge effect on us suburban white teenage musicians, making the British blues-wannabe’s we had been listening to and learning from irrelevant and obsolete. Dylan had heard Mike Bloomfield’s guitar playing, and hired him for his next couple of albums, saying Mike was the best guitarist he had ever heard (as seen in the Scorcese documentary on Dylan, which is fantastic). I saw Bloomfield live only once, in The Electric Flag in 1968 (with the great Buddy Miles on drums). the doors had a real hard time following them on stage ;-), sounding rather anemic in comparison.

Ya ever hear what Sonny Boy Williamson told The Hawks (later The Band) when he jammed with them in ’65? He had just returned from a UK tour, where he had been backed by a lot of the British "Blues" bands. He told them "They (the British players) want to play the Blues in the worst way, and that’s just how they play it." Good one, Sonny Boy! He and The Hawks made plans to tour together, but Williamson dropped dead before it could happened. They instead became Dylan’s road band, touring with him 1965-6. I have two old friends/bandmates who saw them together at The San Jose Civic Auditorium in late ’65, which I now would kill to have been at. I wasn’t hip to Dylan yet; he seemed like a beatnik to me ;-), weird and kinda scary.

My Denon turntable is playing Melody Gardot, Jane Monheit and Swan Lake -Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio - "Close But No Cigar"

Funky Organ Soul Jazz.......... If you like that sort of thing......
@slaw - Somehow I missed  Son Volt "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" when it can out. I took a quick listen on YouTube and liked what I heard. They have it in stock at my LRS, so I think I'll pick it up next time in in the shop.

I'm curious if you bought the most recent Son Volt Record - "Notes of Blue" and what you think about it. I bought it when it first came out and I like it quite a bit.
@reubent,

Yeah, I bought it but it was defective, sent it back, never replaced it.

Actually, I think I saw they have a newer one out after "NOB".?
I love Fridays (and Tuesdays). Those are used bin restocking days at my Local Record Store. Walked out this morning with these beauties from the today's bin:

Harry Nilsson - "Nilsson Schmilsson" - original 1971 release
Chet Baker - "Quartet" w/Russ Freeman - 2016 Vinyl Lover remaster
Ass Ponys - "electric rock music"  - Score! Never seen one of these before. New, unopened in the used bin. The LRS owner says the band members are regulars and they sometimes bring in excess stock and trade on other stuff. Was luck to find this one.

And, from new stock - The Record Store Day 2018 Release of Son Volt - "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" (Thanks to the recommendation from @slaw )

Once through the spin clean and I'll be listening to new records this evening....

@ reubent,

Ever heard Timbuk 3 "Eden Alley"? Nice!

I own the HN lp as well.

........................................................................

Magnolia Electric Co. "Fading Trails"

Robert Finley  "Goin' Platinum"
@slaw - Nope, never heard "Eden Alley". I'll check it out.

Listening to "Nilsson Schmilsson" now. I haven't heard it in years. It's pretty good stuff. Side 2 is near epic with 3 of his biggest hits on that one record side.
Ass Ponys - "electric rock music" - Still one of my favorite records by a local band from here in Cincinnati.
My plan for the rest of the evening...

David Gilmore  "Rattle That Lock"
Graham Parker  "The Mona Lisa's Sister"
Bob Marley  "Exodus"  MFSL
Wow! The GP lp is sounding very, very good!

I know the BM lp will sound great from recent experience.

Happy Listening!
Van Morrison/Duets, Humble Pie/Smokin, Doug Sahm/Live from Austin, Duke Ellington/Piano in the Background, Joe Jackson/Summer In The City. WOW been awhile.
Son Volt - "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" - Holy Cow! I missed this when it was originally releases. Thank goodness it was just released on vinyl for RSD2018. Picked it up based on @slaw recommendation and it is KILLER. Wow!

I picked up a copy of Tommy Bolin's "Private Eyes" in the $2 bin at a record show a couple of years ago. After some TLC, I was impressed with the music and sonics. I sprung for the recent Speakers Corner Re-master and will put it on next.
Just to report back on the differences I hear... the SC remaster has better defined more delineated sonics. The soundstage may be slightly narrower. It may be just a matter of taste whether either version sounds better to you in your system. I would say that it’s not a remaster you should (run out and buy now), but it has it’s merits. For me. I prefer the SC remaster. I now have two very good sounding copies and with the 25% off the SC version, I’m not complaining.

Up next John Lennon "Imagine" MFSL/lp
Collective Soul  "Live".

I've always loved their sound...waited forever for some vinyl.

Sounding good so far.
Cool record, reubent! I found a special version of the LP at Barnes & Noble, the covered signed by Marty and HFS---Harry Stinson (a fantastic drummer and harmony singer), Kenny Vaughan (formerly in Lucinda Williams' band), and new bassist Chris Scruggs (Gary's son). Produced by Mike Campbell, Petty's guitarist.
@bdp24 - Nice find. Does it sound good? I think the original release sounds fantastic.

@reubent, oh the LP itself is the same, B & N just arranged to have the cover signed by the guys before the shrink wrap was put on, as a B & N exclusive. B & N HAVE had some special pressings done of some titles, like colored vinyl, but The Marty Stuart isn’t one of them. Just kinda cool to have the autographs.

For one of my birthdays my woman got me a framed Rockpile (Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, Terry Williams) concert poster signed by all of them except, ironically, Terry. Also ironic is that the poster includes the show's opening act, Pearl Harbor, whose band I later (2003) worked in!

The Doobie Brothers - "what were once vices are now habits"

One of my favorites from my early teen years.......
@lpplayer - Welcome to the "What's on your turntable tonight?" thread. CSNY - nice! Keep 'em coming.......
Bob Dylan/Time Out Of Mind, Duke Ellington/Piano In The Back Ground, Ronnie Spector/English Heartbeat.
