Richard Thompson - 13 Rivers. New West Records 2018 |
Brian,
I passed on that record initially. I have most of not all of his solo output over the last 15/20 years
Hoping you can give me a good reason to buy |
I was able to take home the tube amp I have been interested in (BAT VK-76SE) and connected it yesterday. Could only play a couple of albums due to relatives company coming over (with small children). My speakers are borderline capable of being driven well by a tube amp (Dynaudio Contour 60i) at 4ohm and 88 db efficiency, so this is a real test for me. Thus far the vocals and string instruments are heavenly and the music just floats from the speakers with wonderful spatiality, a bit better than my solid state amp (BAT VK-255SE). However, the slam and grip that I am accustom to with the SS amp was not there, and I miss that. Well, a list of albums for tonight will be the real test. I'll be using some very familiar music. It will include plenty of low frequency energy and mid-bass punch. If this amp can cut the mustard than I will likely make the purchase. If not, I will keep what I have (which is a wonderful amp, too). Though I do want that lovely midrange sound the tube amp gave me yesterday, I just can't give up on the slam, grip and energized room for the total listening experience. We shall see... |
Well, Steve, it’s all very subjective…..but….when I first played this, it seemed very dark and heavy as it started. But After getting 1/2 to 3/4 the way through it the first time, it ‘opened-up’ and felt like a nice broken-in pair of comfy shoes. The recording is actually very nice. Intimate, but with a lot of depth and nice sound staging. And of course, there is Richard’s writing and guitar playing. I will say that his guitar playing seems to me to take a ‘back seat’ on this album. Concentrating more on song writing and delivery perhaps. Don’t get me wrong, Richard still plays well, and it is showcased when need be.
Second time around, I’m liking it even more. Very strong effort IMO. This could become a favorite.
Shoot man, I picked this up for $21 shipped for a 2LP set. What isn’t to like? It’s Richard Thompson. |
Duke Ellington & His Orchestra AP/45 rpm |
Interesting Joel. Good luck with your evaluation. But I’m with you, I also prefer nice slam and punch. It is interesting that the Hagerman tube pre offered more of that (but then, that was vs the Mani, so let’s get real 😁 )….but ultimately still running through the Belles 400A. As they say, it all gots to work together with a synergy you prefer. |
I need to get my Quicksilver V4s into my system soon. |
Hey Steve! So glad to see this marvelous discussion thread continuing to thrive.
Now Playing:

@slaw Indeed, Cafe' Blue is on my list for tonight. That album and on the 1-Step production, is sure to tell it all.
@gmercer the Zeppelin album at MSG brings this to mind for me. I forget the name of the album, but it's a 3 disc set, live album, that was recorded over 2 nights in 1973. Is that the album you have? One of those two nights that went into the recording was at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, CA. I was at that concert!!! Maybe the other night of the recording was at MSG. What memories... |
@big_greg Ernie Ford & Glen Campbell - Ernie Sings, Glen Picks. I don't remember who recommended this but thanks! I found a copy that was still sealed. these were both guys my Mom listened to. I still play glen campbell. How is the music on this record? |
@spiritofradio The album is as described - Ernie singing and Glen playing guitar and they are accompanied by a bass player. That’s it. It sounds fantastic! |

Szell conducts Tchaikovsky - Variations On A Rococo Theme For ’Cello And Orchestra In A Major, Op. 33 & Weber - Overture To "Der Freischütz" / Overture To "Oberon". New York Philharmonic. Columbia Masterworks 1952 Mono
This is one of those mono recordings you kinda shake your head and wonder why it sounds so good, almost stereophonic. The good ones (mono) do that. |
Damien Rice "My Favourite Faded Fasntisy" |
Van Morrison Latest Record Project

Continuing with some of the vinyl I picked up yesterday at the Austin Record Convention :
Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump on a wooden piano - have always loved the original album and this one is awesome except the clear vinyl is noisy on a sparse record so it stands out badly even after a run in the US cleaner.
Buddy Holly - S/T - AP 33rpm - excellent |
Buena Vista Social Club - Lost and Found - VG |
@noromance @bkeske +1 Budapest String Quartet 1951. Finishing the last LP this morning. Started too late last night. A very nice set I’ve been wanting to spin recently, but have been too lazy to interrupt my stereo playing and install the mono cart (as if it takes more than a few minutes 😄 ) |
Lee Morgan - The Cooker - Tone Poet - outstanding, excellent superb! |
@noromance - I played "Life is Hard" for my 17 year old. I loved it! |
Szell conducts Brahms - Brahms: Concerto No. 2 In B-Flat Major. The Cleveland Orchestra w/Leon Fleisher. Epic 1962 Mono
I also bought this in a stereo version. I think I like this better. |
