rockabilly 45s and haunted country. aka "the good stuff"
@slaw The short songs keep it moving right along! Disc 1 has 9 & 10 songs of older stuff, maybe kept short to fit on 45rpm’s and jukebox discs? Interesting observation Steve, I agree radio probably had time limits too. I had never heard about S&G listing a track that way, funny! |
Bill, Lots of songs per side isn't it? on the Motown lp. I think back in the day, radio stations weren't playing songs over 3 minutes. There's a story about Simon & Garfunkel, one of their songs was slightly longer than 3 minutes. The label listed the song on the album 2 min. 65 seconds and got away with it.😁 |
@dayglow I must admit I wasn't really familiar with Richard Thompson's music, but have heard so much about it I wanted to dive in. I don't regret it! |
@big_greg +1 "Across A Crowed Room" might not be a 5* recording but hard to pick the best song off a very solid album. Already had "Shoot Out The Lights"(in 1984) on vinyl which was a little complex for a teenager but was able to discern something special within that album. Will play "Room" or "Lights" on next vinyl night. |
@bdp24 When Marshall Crenshaw released his debut album I was only 17. Was not allowed to attend a rock concert until I was 19, my parents were very strict. Became more aware of his talents when I discovered Joni Mitchell/Van Morrison and Gordon Lightfoot several years later. |
@nicks25 and @dayglow: Another big Marshall Crenshaw fan here! Have either of you seen him live? I saw him in ’82 in one of the big NYC clubs, when his brother was still drumming for him, and Graham Maby (Joe Jackson) was playing 6-string bass and singing harmony (Marshall, Robert, and Grahams 3-parts were perfect, not easy to do live. C, S, & N couldn’t do it). Fantastic! I then saw him a few years later at The Playboy Club on Sunset Blvd. in L.A., just a trio. Still good, but I liked the 5-pc version better. If you haven’t heard it, Marshall’s album entitled #447 (Razor & Tie Records) is also fantastic (actually, all his albums are, right? ;-). He sings all the parts and plays all the instruments, and he’s an excellent drummer. Unfortunately released on CD only; hopefully someone like VMP will reissue it on LP. |
Thanks @dayglow! I rarely ‘crush it’! |
@nicks25 Marshall Crenshaw/ST a top 25 pop/rock recording from the 1980’s. You are crushin' it today. |
@nicks25 No, I have not but will look into it. IMO ZZ Top have 4 5* recordings... Tres Hombre/Fandango/Deguello and Eliminator. |
@nicks25 +3 "Tres Hombres" might be to "mainstream" for some clowns on Agon(lol)? Clearly a top 50 pop/rock recording of the 1970’s. |

That's awesome Steve! I sold my upgraded Herron 1 monoblocks recently. When I set them up to demo for the buyer I realized they sounded better than the amps I decided to keep, so I reached out to Keith about buying another pair and having him "update" those. He said he had parts around to make some M2 amps (using M1A cases) and offered me a great deal, so those will be arriving soon and I will be back to an all Herron system for pre, phono stage, and amplification. I'm pretty excited! On another note, you can skip side 2 of Standing Hampton. |
Sammy Hagar - Standing Hampton. I haven't listened to this in a while and it's actually a lot better than I remember. @bslon You can never have too much Steely Dan. I do wonder about how much better their earlier albums could be. @slaw Heartbeat City is one of my favorite records, great songs and the production... wow! |
