My son just turned 13 and is going to see his current favorite band " System of a Down "at a local arena that holds about 12k people. Theres no way hes going without a parent so I get the honor of taking him as well as one of his freinds in two weeks. He is already trying to get me to take him to a "Foo Fighters/Weezer" concert also. So what bands have your kids talked you into going to see with them that you most likely would not have seen otherwise?
Just recently got dragged to 3 Doors Down, Staind and Breaking Benjamin! A 3 for 1 deal. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it a lot more than the Earth Wind & Fire and Chicago concert my wife coerced me into attending.
Earlier this summer I went to the Vans Warped Tour, with my daughter and her friend. 7 Stages of punk and hardcore, all day in the sun, but no way I was letting my 13 yr old daughter go alone. Last week it was Garbage at a local club.
I have two daughters and unfortunately for me they are 9 years apart and I took my oldest to concerts when she was a teenager. Can't exactly tell the younger no when I did it for the older. Of course as I've grown older my desire to listen to punk has decreased.
I don't know, but I'm 35 and my sister who is 50 is dragging me to see Black Label Society. I like Zach Wylde, but I'm just not into the modern heavy metal which is just making a deep grunting sound over and over.
I took my daughter when she was 13 to see Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 at the Chastain Ampitheatre here in Atlanta in the late 90's. I must admit, I enjoyed the show as well. Although, when everyone stood up and danced to the music..she promptly told me that it wasn't cool for me to be dancing !! :) Kids!
A good concert summer for my 12 and 14 year-olds. First was Stevie Winwood, how had a fine show, then Michael McDonald, who was as much of a class act as ever. They were away for summer camp otherwise they would have seen Collective Soul. Stevie Winwood was their favorite - it was funny for me to see them enjoying his tunes from 30 year ago when I first saw him.
Just the opposite for my daughter and me. When Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson were touring last summer kids twelve and under got in free. She was eleven at the time. Having seen Dylan a number of times I wanted my daughter to see him also. She was glad to go and we had a good time.
In 1995, I took my 12 yo son and a bunch of his 12 and 13 yo friends (male and female) to see Dave Matthews Band. I was stunned at how great they were. Extended jams and very tight musicianship. Unfortunately, in 2005, they are still playing the same songs, with shorter, less improvised jams for larger, louder crowds than ever.
On the flip side, I dragged my son to Grateful Dead concerts beginning when he was a couple of years old. I also forced him to take an LP playback system to college with him, but he is glad I did.
Taking my son to the Nine Inch Nails / Queens of the Stone Age concert next month. I'd go even if he didn't want to though - several friends wish I'd give them the ticket instead.
several months ago i took my wife and 7 year old daughter to see lucinda williams in columbus ohio,this being my daughters first concert i wasnt sure how much she would enjoy herself but she ended up loving it,it seems now that i can do no wrong in my daughters eyes when i throw in a lucinda disc,especially car wheels on a gravel road
I don't beleive the music itself is going to bother me as Systym of a Down definitely has a unique sound...like metal meets an opera voice or something.
My dragged comment was more about mosh pits and left handed smokes ect....and trying to keep them away from both. I am in tune with most of the younger generations music...and my boy just got a Gibson SG and a Marshall amp for his 13th birthday....same guitar that....you guessed it Systym of a down uses. I can remember being a Black Sabbath ect fan when I was his age and my parents put up with it and much more. Just wish I would have got a Gibson electric instead of a crappy used Yamaha classical guitar....lol I see that some of you have endured much worse as far as being dragged to something you most likely would not have gone to....amusing responses for sure.
As much as I hate to admit this....I actually enjoyed myself at this concert and Systym of a Down is a talented high energy band.......very high energy.
Never thought I would actually like this concert....but the decibels were a bit much. The first two bands were not that great though. Apparently...they were filming several songs for there new upcoming Systym of a Down release videos also.
One thing that took me by suprise is that they did an entire Dire Straits song...which was there only cover out of 28 songs. Never thought I would here Dire Straights being played by a hardcore metal group.
To any of you youner or high spirited middle aged people who are already fans....don't miss this band if it comes your way imo.
He was an accomplished pianist, organist and choir director. He was pretty open to new music. He really liked the Doors and at the end of one of the Hendrix shows, stood on a chair to watch Jimi burn his guitar.
So, if you think taking your kids to some lame rock concert is a bore - think of it this way:
Tickets to concert - $300 Take out Pizza - $50.00
Memories for kids? Priceless. OTOH - don't think there is any new music on the level of Doors or Hendrix.
I'll never forget those shows or my father's efforts - at the Doors show, he sat four rows behind my sister and me so he wouldn't embarass us but could keep an eye on us. At the Hendrix show, my sister didn't attend and dad stayed with me because there was no where else to go.
after 10 years of my taking her to shows (joni, townshend, who, pumpkins, bette serveert, donovan, wilco, sonic youth, ocean colour scene, doves to name but a few; she (now 19 and a very fine drummer herself, busy playin around NYC) has now taken me to see patti smith, elvis costello (twice in last year) and paul weller. payback is sweet...
