One thing to pay attention to is whether the seller has the balanced or unbalanced high-pass filter. This is a considerable expense if they don't have the one you need. You'll want the balanced filter for your Parasound gear. |
With a very large room I think the 5s are worth waiting for, and fortunately the 7s are out of reach for most all of us:) |
Samhar
Good buddy you are implying the 3 A Sigs and the 2WQs are close to the Vandy Fives when they are about 60 percent of the Vandy fives. Cheers Johnnyr |
Thanks for all of y’alls input. I have a very large room that these will be in. The reason I brought it up was to see if the $700 give or take was worth it. I love astronomy and there is always the “aperture envy” syndrome, this is good but more is better. ;) So the idea that if I had the quatros I would always want the 5’s has a certain element of truth to it. I am just starting to save money as this will be a couple year project of saving and acquisition for a new overall system with the speakers probably being last unless a killer deal comes along. Any other opinions on the sound differences or which is easier to set-up. I will be using a parasound jc2 and a21 for the 2ch and have not decided on an avr for the ht set-up.

If you get the Quattros, you will be thinking about the 5s, but not the other way around. |
One other thing you might keep in mind: if you go with the 5's, you do have an upgrade path (though admittedly not a cheap one) to 5a status should funds and tastes dictate that in the future. If you go with the Quatros, you pretty much have them (not that that is a bad thing by any stretch) for the duration. At least that's the situation today -- Richard could always spin up a Quatro Series II someday.
Full disclosure: I have 5a's and love 'em.
Happy listening, Dawgfish |
Jonnyr Your point is????? 5's are as good or better than Sophia 1's????? I didn't hear what the 3A Sigs and 2Wq's were capable of ????? The 5's are much better than the combo I had?????
Your a dealer and must defend a product you carry!!!!!!???? You're still pissed off because I suggested an Ear pre over an Aesthetix Calypso to someone ????
I never said the 5's weren't any good I just think the Sophia 1's are a choice to consider at that price especially if someone likes dynamics and inner detail!!! |
service is identical and with both models modular construction easy to service Best Johnnyr |
TD,
Well then, I'm making the same point if the Quattro ever had to be serviced. It IS something to think about for the future if either were purchased.
Happy now? |
Samhar I know you had 3 a sigs and 2 Wqs but you mentioned you were never able to run your Aesthetix pre amp in balanced mode which is at its best in balanced dif XLR and also never had Quicksilver v4s in a balanced differential version. This combination makes for a huge difference with any speaker let alone a high passed bi amped pair You were going thru 2 phase inverters or a more complected circuit. sorry you had no guidance at the time with this. Best Johnnyr

Like the Quattros are way easier to service or they are way more reliable vs the 5s...what is the point?
The Quattro is plenty big and heavy and since several drivers and the bass amps are variations of same production...you are down the same road for the most part.

To get a pair of Model 5's for $5400 is certainly a great deal.
But if anything goes wrong with them at some point in time, I can only imagine what a tremendous hassle it would be to get those things serviced.

As some have pointed out exactly what Quattro and I assume the reqular 5 and not the 5A.
But I think the following can be said: The built in "subs" of the 5s are better than the Quattros. I think the 5s 7 inch bass/low mid driver is better than whats used in the basic quattro. Does even the best Quattro use that driver at this point? I also think the cabinet of the 5 performs better than that of the Quattro.
700 bucks matters, but I think it does get you more if you can swing it. Also as pointed out, size of room could be a significant factor. Another thing, find out how old the 5s are, they have been in production for a quite a while. I believe they have had various small improvements over the years with no model change.

Shipping from Canada (Quatro's) vs New York (5's) !!!! At this price there are a pair of Wilson Sophia 1's in FL for $6000, I realize I'm prejudice but I did own 3A Sigs with a pair of 2Wq's, a combo that is very similar to the 5's before I bought the Sophia 1's. |
A slight variation on a common theme.
For this delta in price, the 5s seem like a better idea. OTOH, both of these speakers bark up substantially the same tree and - to my ear- sound quite similar, so long as: the program material/room size does not require the 5's superior deep bass capability. That would be almost always, IME.
While the 5s do have other advantages over the Qs, the difference isn't dramatic and the latter are really very good speakers in their own right. So why not save the $?
Because the 5s at that price are a better deal. IMHO, if you can get the price on the Qs down about another $700-$1K, you'll have a real decision on your hands.

I'm with Jim. I might look at some other things too, at those prices. (For example, the Gallo 3.5s now listed here.)
I've only compared the Quattro wood and 5A, but that makes me think, like the others, that the 700 w'd be well spent, if you're committed to used Vandys, and your room can handle the big 5s.
John |
Size matters! Room size that is. Bigger needs bigger usually.
if the amp in use has no issues with either speaker system heed the above advice.
Otherwise.... I'd look at some other speakers myself.... and to be fair to yourself, you should.
|
For what it's worth I have heard both Quatros wood and original and the 5's. I can't say what version of the 5's but in my opinion, spend the extra 700. I think the 5's are better in every aspect. The only better is the new 7. And again my opinion, your ears need to be the final vote. |
Both of these are excellent speakers. The 5's, however, would outperform the Quatros in a larger room due to the size of the subs and drivers. If your room is larger than 2000 cu ft, I would recommend the 5's. |
Are they 5's or 5A's...are the Quatros wood or cloth?? |
