Upgrade from DeVore Gibbon X
I have happily owned these speakers for about 6 years now; during this time I have patiently upgraded my front end, with the Gibbons successfully conveying each upgrade. While I am very happy with my current system, I am now wondering if a speaker upgrade is in order. I am interested in some input from anyone who has upgraded from the Gibbon X or someone who has had significant time comparing these speakers to other offerings. Wilson Sasha DAWS? Magico? I am running an all VAC front end (100W/ch) in a 17 X 19 room.
I am looking in the pre-owned market up to 25K (hopefully less) which I believe gives me sufficient room for an upgrade. As far as sound characteristics, I definitely want the usual wide and deep soundstage, refinement, detail without grain or ear bleeding, dynamic, decent speed, tight bass with slam, and vocals to die for. I feel like my Gibbons do well in many of these areas, which is why I have stayed with them for the past 6 years. I am interested in speakers that can be considered an upgrade in some/many of these areas, vice a lateral move. |
What does Kevin Hayes say when asked which speakers mate best with his gear? VAC and Vandersteen seem to show together frequently.
I have heard the X but I have not had the pleasure of experiencing your VAC amps(but Ive owned a few VAC amps over the years). Certainly the Devore O20/OBronze would be an upgrade although the presentation is quite different from the X. |
Here are some I think meet your sonic objectives and would be significant upgrades from your speakers so worth a look… https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/650017479-joseph-audio-pearl-3-speakers/ (if still available) https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/650069988-rockport-avior-ii-black/ https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/650058764-proac-k8/ https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/650092622-vandersteen-model-5a-carbon/ https://soundapproach.com/usher-diamond-td-10-tower-speaker-pair.html (This one is only available new but still very worth considering IMO) Not sure Magico would be a good sonic match, and while the Sasha DAWs may be great I’d check if they’d work well with your amps. FWIW, and best luck. |
Regarding soix’s list, I heard a pair of the Rockport Avior’s at AXPONA this year, and they really stood out. Only bested by the Qln’s for my ears. That said, I made a point to hear the Devores as I had heard so much about them, they were not for me. Seemed like the other speakers had a much richer sound. A matter of taste for sure. |
Thanks for the inputs so far; I have been to the Capital Audiofest over the years and have listened to VAC gear paired with Von Schweikert which make for a nice combination. I have heard the DeVore O Reference which sounded nice, but out of my price range; I have not heard of any plans for John DeVore developing an upgrade to the Gibbbon X. Borrensen’s have not been on my radar scope; I will have to give them a listen. I did hear the newer Joseph Audio Perspective Graphene at the Capital Audiofest; I believe it was paired with Doshi electronics which were also a nice pairing. Looks like I have some homework to do… |
@post2338 I mistyped above when referring to Vandersteen which of course you correctly identified as Von Schweikert |
you will not like the borrenson they are much more hifi sounding the devores
look at Qln and Legacy the legacys have a bit more detail then Devores they are smooth yet detailed have a huge soundstage very deep bass and incredible dynamics and are very efficient

Many options depending on your existing gear and personal biases. If it were me, I would take a look at a used pair of Joseph Audio Pearls. Excellent price point / performance option. Consistently "best in show" awards (recently Axpona 24), rave reviews and very happy owners. Recall seeing a pair recently for sale in the $25K range. Don’t know if it is the legacy or the current grahene model. Jeff uses Doshi in show demos so might want to do some homework if you pursue this recommendation. Can’t imagine your VACS not matching well. Had the Pulsars with a REL sub for the last six years. Very musically engaging and a "listen to hours" type sound. Most folks who own JA speakers would agree. That’s why you do not see this brand for sale on a frequent basis. Good luck.
