Unable to read an original cd
I have Ayre CX-7eMP cdp and I can say only superlatives about it. Couple of days ago I took one CD from my collection which, I think, never played on my Ayre. So, my cd player couldn't read that CD and prepare it for playback. Just to say, I've never had such a problem with any other CD. I tried another CD's randomly and they were okay. However I contacted Ayre's Service Manager and he replied immediatelly. Big plus for Ayre. He said that there are some CD's which are made out of tolerances regarding Redbook standard and cd players has different abilities to read such CD's. He said that cd mastering is all over the map now too. He suggested me, just to make sure there is nothing wrong with the laser and see what's goin' on, that I could make a CD-R copy of that CD and see if it plays. If it does, the original pressed CD is probably out of tolerance. If it does not, then that indicates a mastering issue. I made a CD-R copy and that copy plays without any problem by my Ayre.

CD Production quality is an issue, but, FWIW, I have a new transport which had occasional issues which I thought I had traced to CD quality, some worked some and some not so well, if at all. I also noticed a mechanical noise coming from the transport on some CD’s as well, so I figured I had a bummer transport and was getting ready to return it. After futzing a bit, I discovered the problem disappeared when I carefully leveled the transport. It now reads all of my disc’s (that I’ve tried) and the ’noise’ has completely disappeared. Who knew! :-) |
@newbee I've never noticed some strange noise and the player is ideally leveled. This is the only CD which is not read of all others I ever tried. Its CD-R copy became the equal member of my collection. Just to mention... this Ayre is an incredible player and by far the best I ever had. |

Some CDs are simply defective. I’ve experienced a few over the years but not many. Try ripping it with dbpoweramp. That might work even if real time play fails. Never encountered a CD that could not be ripped. Worst case a very poor quality CD when ripped might result in audible playback glitches where the defects are worst.
