Tune of the Day

"Blue Rondo a la Turk"  on the Two Generations of Brubeck album.  Wow.

There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8?  I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes.  This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it.  Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too.  It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.

You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All".  And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".

For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.

@77jovian

Yesterday evening a friend and I were talking music and all the groups that Gary Wright was in.  That led to Spooky Tooth and Cotton Growin’ Man.

What a coincidence.

@slaw... you're pretty much keeping this thread alive these days. I have some time today though. Just put some NOS Brimar 12ax7/4004 tubes in the linestage & wanna give it a twirl. Nils Lofgren Band, "Tender Love" off Every Breath, Gladys Night & The Pips "Neither One of Us" off Neither One of Us and Anette Askvik "Liberty" off Liberty

Jim, that's a wild coincidence.  I was just thinking about Spooky Tooth the other night, too.  Mainly "Waiting for the Wind" from Spooky Two.  Great tune, love how they started with a drum backbeat and slowly dialed in some echo that made the drums sound like a whole roomful of drums.  Anyway, that song is a note-for-note match with another cut by another band, and I was trying to recall what it was, wondering which was the chicken and which was the egg.  But I couldn't recall the other cut.  Deep Purple?  Maybe you'll know.

I'm a big fan of Spooky Tooth.  How can you not get a kick out of a band that released "You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw", and followed it, after a rebirth, with the very spiritual "Witness"?

ryan adams, to be without you... It pains me that so many gifts were bestowed on such a bad person, but gifted he is...

At least he contributes his musical talents to those who’ll accept them. Making a positive impact.

@bdp24, long history of terrible/drug-addled onstage behavior + really pervy behavior with young women. not good, though undeniably a brilliant singer and songwriter.

Ryan Adams? Seriously? Hardly much musical talent either.. more for pop lovers.

Speaking of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", check out the version by Great Ceasar's Ghost.

This is an album, not a song, but I recently discovered Angus and Julia Stone.  Their self titled debut on Qobuz.  Good tunes.  Really grows on you.
