Tune of the Day

"Blue Rondo a la Turk"  on the Two Generations of Brubeck album.  Wow.

There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8?  I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes.  This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it.  Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too.  It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.

You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All".  And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".

For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.

Vigilante adolescence

i have that Cooder
will give it a listen

Here’s a timely yet timeless song: "Vigilante Man", written by Woody Guthrie. Being born too late to have heard his recordings when they were contemporary, I heard the song first by my (and a lot of musicians I know) favorite guitarist, Ry Cooder. The song is included on his 3rd album, Into The Purple Valley.

I just watched a fantastic video on YouTube, an interview with Ry Cooder done in England in 1983 (entitled Ry Cooder talks about influences, guitar styles, & more). In the interview, Ry says about the song: "I get a lot of requests for the song. Today, right now, ya know?. It’s not hard to figure out; there’s always somebody who’s the vigilante, and there’s always somebody who’s getting their head beat open."

Or, say, shot dead on the street.

Yeah @reubent, imo Them are under-rated. As a band (ignoring songwriting), I think they and The Kinks were the best of the British Invasion (Manfred Mann perhaps third), and Van Morrison the best singer (followed by Eric Burton and Paul Jones). I actually saw Them live in ’66 (I think it was, though it may nave been in early ’67), the last tour with Van in the band. They were grrreat!

"Mystic Eyes" is another killer Them track, and of course "Here Comes The Night."

@bdp24  - And All,

Speaking of "Them", this one's been in regular rotation on my playlist for the last few weeks.....

Perfection!
@bdp24,

Yeah, it's on their "Whites Off Earth Now" album. A different take for sure.
Wow @slaw, The Junkies do that song? I absolutely love Them's version (wickedly "tough", and even better imo than Big Joe Williams' 1935 original); I can't imagine how Margo sings the song; she and they are so laconic, ya know? Having heard Aerosmith's lame version of Tiny Bradshaw's "Train Kept A Rollin" (done well by The Yardbirds, even better by The Johnny Burnette Trio), I have no doubt they butchered this song as well.
@slaw, "Love Hurts" is one of my very favorite songs, written by Boudleaux Bryant (unusually, without his songwriting partner/wife Felice). Be sure to hear the original version by The Everly Brothers, upon which Gram and Emmylou modeled theirs.
