Tune of the Day

"Blue Rondo a la Turk"  on the Two Generations of Brubeck album.  Wow.

There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8?  I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes.  This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it.  Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too.  It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.

You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All".  And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".

For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.

Tom's tune of the evening is Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez from the CD - Live at the Ruhr Trienniale

Red Dog Tracks

For anyone who has not heard this recording, just get it. It is an incredibly good sounding recording and a fantastic performance by a duo who were at the absolute top of their form. Seriously incredible stuff. Oh, and the band features Chip and Carrie, plus Greg Leisz, Bill Frisell, David Pitch and Buddy Miller.

nutty,

Good one! I've always loved that song. Was lucky enough to see Max Webster open for Rush around that time. Max Webster was a GREAT live band and Kim Mitchell was a great front man. Of course, Rush ain't a bad live band either....... :~)

Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez - Red Dog Tracks from Live at the Ruhr Triennial. Awesome.........
The Alarm - The Stand

Come on Down and Meet Your Maker,
Come on Down and Make the Stand.
Come on Down, Come on Down,
Come on Down and We'll Make the Stand....

slaw,

I love Alison Moyet! Great voice. The YAZ albums, as well as her solo albums, are old favorites of mine.
Counting Crows - "Anna Begins"

My friend assures me, "It's all or nothing".
I am not worried, I am not overly concerned.
My fiend implores me, "For one time only,
Make an exception". I am not worried.....

Quite possibly the cutest rock chick EVER!

Just living on a Sunday morning, got my toast and tea and I'm warm and I
Just thought I'd think about. all the things to get and keep getting, never
Enough not enough and never ending. I just thought I'd think about. and it might be...

The comfort of a knowledge of a rise above the sky above could
Never parallel the challenge of an acquisition in the here and now.

Parody of yourself in color, giving it to everybody but your mother. you've got much to
Think about. soaring higher with every treason. never justify, never reason.
You've got much to think about. and it might be...
[the fast part again.]

Hey Slaw,

Have you heard these 2 tracks from the newer Camper Van Beethoven records? They are both really, really good.....

Enjoy!

OK Guys,

I can't take it any longer! I dropped Dawg Yawp on you a few days ago, and NO response? It's DAWG YAWP! A sitar based singing/songwriting duo with deeply introspective lyrics and a quirky delivery. I can't take it! You have to "Throw me a Bone" and provide some kind of feedback.

FYI, In case you want to know the Dawg Yawp story, check out the World Cafe Interview below.....

Nutty,

U from Cincinnati? Dawg Yawp might resonate a bit more with you because they local. Discovered while working at Taste of Belgium in OTR. The World Cafe Interview is pretty cool if you get a chance to listen.

The music is definitely modern folk and it might be not appeal to everyone. But it is new and it is different. And I'm always hearing from people that they want to hear something new and different. We'll here ya go....
I am in Cincinnati, hello neighbor. I checked your links for Dawg Yawp. I gotta say it is different. Not bad even. They are very talented and very unique. Honestly, it's not something that I would normally gravitate towards. And I like a wide range of music. But I'm going to play it again tomorrow. Maybe they will grow on me.

Nutty,

Yep, it's a little off the beaten path. Not often you hear a sitar fronted band. I think it's kind of cool, especially because they are local and were "discovered" while working as bus boys at a local restaurant I've been known to frequent. I also think the lead singer sounds a lot like another local guy - Chuck Clever from Ass Ponys and now with Wussy.
Song of the Day!

Adrian Belew combines with the Raisins to form the Bears. Pop Rock Perfections is the result......

reubent,

I listened some more to Dawg Yawp. I find them very interesting and certainly, they stand out from the crowd. I thought it could be worth buying (it is available on vinyl) but upon listening over Amazon, the SQ seemed too digital. Thanks for making us aware.

slaw,

It is available on vinyl. I'm going to pick it up and I'll let you know how it sounds....

reubent,
I very heard of the Ass Ponys. Perhaps youve encountered Swan in your travels in and around Cincy/N. Ky?

Nutty,

I've never heard Swan. Hopefully I will cross their path someday.

Ass Ponys were a major local band back in the mid '90's. The had some critical acclaim nationally with their album "electric rock music". It may be an acquired taste for some listeners, but it is a favorite of mine since it was introduced.

The lead singer and songwriter from Ass Ponys is Chuck Clever. He's co-lead of the local band Wussy who have received considerable nation acclaim.

Nutty and All,

Here’s another local N. KY/Cincinnati Band that’s currently touring and making good records.

Frontier Folk Nebraska

I’ve seen them a few times and they are very good live. They play pretty regularly at Southgate House Revival and will be there later this month. I saw them there last year the nights they recorded their live album. Looks like they might be down at SXSW right now playing multiple venues.

Check out "Desert Car Chase", "I’m Electric, Call me Lightning" and "Buffalo Summer" from their album "Frontier F**k Nebraska". Good stuff....

Nutty,

Glad you are enjoying Frontier Folk Nebraska. It ain't folk, and they're not from Nebraska. :~)

You guys should go check them out when they are back at Southgate House Revival. Really small venue, up close and personal. Bring earplugs!

For another great local Cincinnatian's show, check out Adrian Belew when he returns to the 20th Century theater next month. I know you're a fan of guitar bands. He's a guitarist's guitarist......
@folkfreak

You win, but then, you are a folk freak.....just saying'..

I think a lot of people are surprised when they find out some great, well known rock songs are actually covers. Lots of examples, of which this is a good one. And, of course, Nazareth's big hit - "Love Hurts" is another classic example.
Nutty,

"This Flight Tonight", in its original album version, as well as this acoustic version, is probably my favorite Nazareth song. But, it's a cover. Do you know who wrote it and originally recorded it?
@77jovian - I’ve really enjoyed the thread. Thank You for initiating it and thanks to everyone who has posted a Tune of the Day.

I’ve been thinking about trying to post a daily tune of a track that has some meaning to me, or just a song I like and want to share. Some might be popular hits from the past and some might be more obscure. Also, they may be various different genres. Since this is an active thread, I figured it would be a good place to post my daily selections. Please let me know if I you think I should start a new "daily tune" thread or continue to use this one. I don't want to take over your thread......
