Check out Bryan ferry live in Lyon Fantasic !!! Nice surrounds. |
I like Within Temptation's "Black Symphony" on Blu-ray, but it'll cost you $40 or so (in the US) as an import. They're a very good Dutch symphonic metal/rock band and this concert is a great introduction to the band's material. |
check out 20 steps from Stardom not much for musical documentaries but this is a heart warming story of some of the best backup vocalists in the bizz. Sound and picture are excellent |
Great thread!
I already had some of the recommendations, but bought several more. All were quite wonderful!
I especially enjoyed the RTF (Return to Forever) returns, Live at Montreux performance. Although I was familiar with the individual RTF performers (Corea, Clark, Di Meola and White), I had not heard them perform as a group. It would be an understatement to say that I was impressed. Their ability to tightly mesh together as a single entity, but stand out in each of their own disciplines, was a real treat to see and hear.
Additionally, as a CTA (Chicago) fan, I really enjoyed the Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire: Live at the Greek Theatre DVD. One wouldnt necessarily think that the two together would be a good combo, but boy, it was! On the DVD, each group performed separately and then together. For the fans of either or both groups, what a great party DVD!
The 25th Anniversary of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was also a real winner! |
Just watched Cream at Albert Hall. Very nice. |
Forgot to mention Pat Metheny The Way Up on br...my favorite album by him and performed in it's entirety. Very well done. Again...amazon. |
Porcupine tree or Steve Wilson "Get All You Deserve" The solo project is much like King Crimson progressive rock that can be funky and jazzy....great stuff. Check it out on utube. Infact with u tube you can get an idea of whether or not you like the artist before buying the bray.
I like shopping on am zon
I agree with others about the D Matthews live at radio city and the Eagles farewell. Both are reference. |
Chris Botti at Boston Symphony Hall. |
Great thread!
I have many of the DVD's mentioned, but have added more from this thread to my to-buy short list.
But, I don't think that "The Doors: Live at the Bowl'68" was mentioned. Given 1968's limited video technology and a need for such recordings (who would see it & how would it be seen?), it is a sonic and video marvel and a great time capsule.
The making of the DVD sections are must sees. However, I didn't watch them until I viewed the concert. I would recommend that others do likewise. Not knowing some of the background of the making of the DVD makes the DVD and its performances all the more remarkable.... |
First I will say. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! to all. Phil Collins live in Montreal is astonishing....him singing live is incredible with his talent. It's on my top 5 list.... |
Need to add Black Sabbath " Gathered In Their Masses". Excellent sound and video. Drums are very clean with tons of slam. The drum solo is great for showing off the subs. |
Stevie Wonder and the daughter albeit not bad certainly not top 20! Joe Bonamasa's new BR certainly worthy of note. As for Deep Purple Gilain would do better as a comedian! |
I love all of my Blu-ray DVD concerts but if I had to vote on one, it would no question be Stevie Wonder "Live at Last". On a solid HT system, this is a PHENOMONAL concert. TURN IT UP !!! |
Ever since upgrading my oppo to the new 105, the musical side of the concerts has only gotten better especially in the Bluray department...Thanks for the Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, just got that one too...very nice...If you like classical...I did find a copy of the Trondheim Solistene 'Souvenir'for a deal in BluRay..truly another marvel and musical experience |
I've about 40 blue-ray discs and of these, about a dozen are concerts. Most are really good (the Led Zep Celebration Day falls into that category). Were I to want to show off my HT system or to test a new component, I would use Peter Gabriel's Secret World or one of the Nine Inch Nails offerings. For those of more Catholic tatstes, the blue ray reissue of the Grateful Dead movie is also outstanding though not quite at the level of the PG or NIN items. The visual quality of the Peter Gabriel disc isn't on par with the audio content IMHO. |
Bonamassa is a great guitarist. This concert will be shown on Directv April 3rd. Channel 567 PLDAHD if you want to check him out. I bet he sounds great on DTS-MA. |
Just released..Joe Bonamassa live at the Vienna Opera House...All I can say is AMAZING...very good array of performers join in and different acoustic instruments...If you know Joe you know this is GOOD..If not..I urge you to check him out...not for all but I am sure a good majority..Enjoy !!! |
I found both Eagles and Metallica at Best Buy last week. $16 for Metallica! I don't like all the camera angles but the sound is very good for a hard rock concert. I was pretty surprised! |
@Jp1208, where did you pic up Metallica? I saw them live in Apple River Wisconsin back in the 90's after the "black" album. Huge outdoor concert. Must have been 30,000 people or more.... |
Eagles Farewell Tour blu-ray is excellent.
Another I picked up and is very good sounding is Metallica Live in Quebec. I was thinking this was going to be brittle or a little harsh. It's crankable! |
|
JP I listened to cuts off the CD and albeit decent it doesn't make my top 20. Having said that its on my wish list. You are in what age bracket 35-45? |
Tobb, the new 2112 is just a music BR but it's pretty cool. They really expanded the stage and not near as brittle. I just threw it out there for the Rush fans.
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds at Radio city sounds pretty darn good to me. |
Another that never made my list was Etta James but I tried to cater to all. For a 1993 BR Etta's is quite well done. |
Jp if you are a Clapton fab despite what sine reviews say " Old Sock" is well worth a listen. The Mrs and their two girls even get in on the act. There is some reason why I didn't pick Dave Mathews let me get back to you on it. I bought the previous Rush BR and it's more a story of the band and not on my recommended list |
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds did not make your top 20? I'm going to pick up Eric Clapton's guitar festival 2010!
If any of you are Rush fans the 2112 blu-ray audio disc is a good one. Much better than any 2112 cd I have owned. |
Great references Tobb! Thanks |
Kenk for some reason they have reversed the order of my posts. |

Kenk I did a little exercise to see how close I was out of the 132 BRs I have. This was my top 35 in no ranking: Dream With Me in Concert Jackie Evancho Farewell Live From Melbourne The Eagles Hit Man Returns: David Foster & friends Fca 35 Tour: An Evening With Peter Frampton Roy Orbison: Black & White Night Joe Bonamassa Beacon Theatre - Live From New York John Mayer: Where the Light Is - Live in Los Angeles Amy Winehouse - I Told You I Was Trouble London Calling: Live in Hyde Park Bruce Springstein Jeff Beck Rock'n'Roll Party: Honoring Les Paul Chris Botti in Boston Songs From The Road Leonard Cohen Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium Sting Live In Berlin Pink: Funhouse Tour - Live in Australia B.B. Kenk for the money its an excellent purchase. Orianthi is an incredible lead guitarist however I am not so sure it would make my top ten. Maybe top 50. |
Michael Jackson's This is It! Awesome sound and great PQ to boot. |
Drumm Henley's a perfectionist and if its not right the fit will hit the shan in Vegas.lol You like Beck's BR that much! hmmm I have it and although good its not in my top 20. The BR is under-produced like most BRs if you're looking for a volume boost. But the quality is Henley perfect! |
Bob Sting in Berlin is a top notch BR even if you don't like Sting's antics! lol Dominic Miller is one of the best acoustic guitarists bar none! |
Just got my Eagles Farewell on Bluray, will be checking it out tonight. Yes the sax players, rest of the horns are excellent. Hope the bluray sound track will bring the audio up a notch or two. If not it's still one of my top two,the other of course JB at Ronnie Scott's,best test to see how your sub really sounds. with the right sub those drums should sound like you are right in the front room, not volume wise I mean tone, attack ect. My F-113's didn't do Vinnies drums justice at all. Anyhow superb concert and on March 23,the Eagles are playing in Veagas at the MGM Grand. The wife and sis and myself we got tickets,I'm hoping the acoustics are superb in there. Have heard it'll hold 16,800,should be a great time. |
All these people sniveling over the disk not working! What's the disk problem got to with the quality of the production ....Nada!! Hotel California alone is worth the price of the disk! It's a riveting version with Bill Armstrong's compelling trumpet solo. The horn section with Greg Smith barritone sax,Al Garth - alto sax and violin; Bill Armstrong - trumpet; and Chris Mostert tenor is amazing. Yes Henley's a perfectionist and if you don't like perfect don't buy the disk. Hole in the world is a tribute to 9/11 and good example of what makes the Eagles click with this 5 part harmony piece. We have a sound system that am thankful for every day. Having seen the Eagles on their last trip to Vancouver this BR was like reliving the night. How can you possibly not give it 5 stars is beyond me. It rates with my top 5 out of 150 BRs. |
Sting Live in Berlin A++++ everything, i decode sound in my A1UDCI (dedicated 6x AKM DACs, one per channel, Oppo you listenin?) with the HC9000 doing the video. Fan-friggin-tastic concert. |
We better add another - Eagle Farewell 1 Tour-Live from Melbourne, finally available on Blu-ray.
Just watched it last night in its entirety, all 30 tracks. Had seen it before on HD-DVD but that disc was lossy Dolby. This one is uncompressed DTS Master and I now have a new reference disc for multi-channel sound. Simply spectacular audio!
Having a dual purpose Music/HT system, every time I start thinking of replacing my multi-channel power amp with a better 2 channel amp because I seldom use more than 2 channels (occasional movie or concert), something like this disc comes around. And it reminds me just how good digital can be for music when done right. Problem is there are just so few of them. |
Just got Santana Greatest Hits Live at Montreaux, a July, 2011 concert. His greatest songs, mainly from the Abraxas and Santana albums with some newer ones like Smooth and Maria Maria.
Fantastic concert and the whole band is really smokin on this one. This is a must for Santana fans. |
Anyone check out, Rolling Stones 'Charlie is my Darling' ? |
STAIND LIVE FROM MOHEGAN SUN . A great sounding blu ray even if you don't like hard rock . The multi and 2 channel sounds pretty good one of the best I highly recommend . |
Thank you for the explaination, JP1208. I appreciate it.
Due to WAF, I had to move my subs yet again this weekend. I will need to do some listening to see what the result of the movement is. Then do some more tweaking to see if I can improve the sound. |
Admranger, just the overall bass in general is very good and clean. The heartbeats get a little carried away but is very clean and will test your amp and how well it can control the speakers low end. This will also test your room and let you know if your room is putting out unwanted frequencies. I think they increased the db's on the heartbeat so if you can control those beats you can just about control anything.
There are test track cd's out there that can help with bass management. I have the XRCD24 bit Sheffield drum test disc which is great for bass management.
Lately I have been spinning the DVD-A of Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues and Dire Straits SACD of BIA.
If you like Talking Heads the DVD-A 5.1 mixes are a lot of fun and done very well and I'm not much into mixes.
Again, I think these discs have bass that is very well done with a little more detail and clarity going to Dire Straits SACD. |
JP1208: Are you referring the heartbeats at the beginning song of the 1st DVD of the Gilmore DVD? I guess I wasn't impressed by the bass so that means I have some work to do with bass management... |
Just ordered Gilmore at RAH. Should be interesting to listen to with some of the tweaks I've done to my system. |
Quality of many bluray concerts are nice these days.
my favorites: Jewel The Essential Live Somgbook: Live at the Rialto theatre is by far the best acoustic recoding I heard today.
The Police Certifiable: Low freq. are stunning, difinition of high's are also impressive.
25th Ann Rock&Roll hall of fame: most of the recordings are very gut. Metallica misses the drive in the low freq. |
Jp still not convinced on Gilmore's Bluray! lol His guitar is still among the best though. He should look at what most of the geezers do get some vocals to complement his shortfalls. I agree with Adele's Bluray too! We are running Whisper XDs with a Coda 15.0 and 7X Pre and there is nothing they can't handle. The bass is pristine! Unless the recordings are that poor and then the system only magnifies the garbage! lol BTW Albert Hall is my favorite venue. |
Tobb, his vocals are getting a little old but vocals in general on the BR are very good. Royal Albert Hall is a great place to record live and it shows on both Adele and Gilmore. The whole venue is very good but Adele's voice is fresh and stunning on her BR. The opening bass on Gilmore's BR is startling. I have two JL Audio F113's and I would have to say if you want to test your subs to see just how good or poor they are this is the BR to do that with. Very clean bass. |
@JP1208 Gilmore can still play guitar but his voice is very poor on this Bluray. |
Farewell tour is unavailable until FEB 19. I faked another order so you can PREORDER which I did last week. |
