As a huge fan, I'll often recommend Lindsey Buckingham's recordings, and his "Songs From The Small Machine" BluRay might work for you here. I was at this particular show, and the sound on the Blu-Ray is, in at least one respect, better than the sound at my seat (the drum sound has been cleaned up on the recording).

The handful of acoustic numbers that start the show are performed solo and are a treat for fans of fingerpicked acoustic guitar. Then his band joins him and the set includes some great, full on rock n roll. The Fleetwood Mac tunes are great, if you're a fan. This is great stuff for fans of electric guitar. It may be a little schizophrenic for some tastes, but if you like both sides of guitar driven pop/rock music, this is a terrifically played, well recorded sampler.

The rock and roll hall of fame anniversary concert set of 2 disc is well recorded and has some nice performances. I strongly second Dave Matthesw / Tim Reynolds. |
My two reference BluRays for concerts are - RUSH, Snakes and Arrows and Heart, Live in Seattle. Audio and HD Video are outstanding on both. |
Roy Orbison has a wonderful blu ray. There are a good variety these days depending on your taste. If you just want demo material then the AIX set up/ test blu ray has some excellent performances. Next Tuesday I believe thre is a new Paul Simon concert being released which I'm betting will be superb.

Check out Lee Ritenour's(OverTime)
Superb video and audio,Lee takes you from the 70's to now.
Lots of closeup shots of individual soloists ect.
The second half things speed up a bit and Lee has some younger players who are really good.
Music varies from jazz to Brazilian to funk and everything in between.
All in all very well done Bluray disc.The cd is good also. |
Forgot to mention,this concert is in a small setting and Lee and musicians are in a circle type setting which is quite different,seems to put you right in there with the band.
Course my scope screen helps big time(LOL). |

I can't believe no one has mentioned Return to Forever returns, Live at Montreux. Fan effing tastic. This should be on everyone's reference list. I ordered it from Amazon. Got it a week later. Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al Dimeola, Lenny White. If you don't like this, I really don't know what to suggest. |

The new Led Zeppeling Blu Ray is quite nice (not spectacular for a sound quality persective), as is the new Coldplay concert disc. |
Here are some Blu-rays that I use for reference discs, both audio and video.
Heart Live in Seattle, label is Image Entertainment. This concert is one of the rare 5.0 only DTS HD Master but believe me, it lacks no bass.
Rush Snakes and Arrows, label Anthem Entertainment. 5.1 DTS HD Master. Spectacular audio and video if you are a Rush fan.
Stevie Nicks Live, label Soundstage, 5.1 uncompressed PCM, awesome sound and video, good mix of Stevies's solo stuff and Fleetwood Mac favorites.
If any of the above artists appeal to you, I highly recommend you check these out. |
I also have Return to Forever's live at Montreux 2008. Great sounding disc and I love RTF, BUT for me I do not like hearing instruments in the rear channels! I was around when Quadraphonic was new and had a flashback to that era when listening to this disc the first time. They should have just used it for venue ambiance and audience feedback to get the feeling of the venue they were playing at! |
Worth repeating as the others have stated. I have Jeff Beck, Dave Matthews-Tim Reynolds,and John Mayer. All of those I have used as a demo at one time or another. The David Gilmoure live at the Royal Albert Hall is very good especially if you like clean and clear vocals thru your center channel. I have to say that David Crosby and Graham Nash who are on the disc add excellent vocals. The opening low end is great on the first song which is Breathe(In the air) and is much more dynamic than when first heard years ago on Dark side of the Moon played on vinyl thanks to uncompressed audio and good subwoofers these days! Great up front vocals with hall ambiance around you.I'm going to pickup Led Zepplin, The Police, and the Rush recommnendations, thanks for starting this thread! |
Statman, I did not notice any instuments mixed directly on the surround channels on the RTF blu ray. It sounds very balanced in my system. I will listen to it again to hear if I was missing something. |

Great thread. I just ordered Snakes and Arrows and the Botti disc with a gift card I received. Looking forward to getting them. Adele is on the 'wish list' and ironically, the only one I have not had a chance to see in concert. |
I also bought Adele's dvd mentioned above and have now put all three through their paces on my less than perfect (but improving) system.
Did anyone else find the Snakes and Arrows DTS5.1 to be harsh or over-bright sounding? At some points things began to blur and the sound was confused. Maybe it was just me? I'm a huge Rush fan and I saw them do this tour live (and several other Rush live shows) so it wasn't new or unfamiliar material. I liked the sound a lot better on 2.1 Dolby than DTS 5.1.
Adele was brilliant in DTS5.1 as was Botti. It was just the Rush DVD that was 'meh' in DTS 5.1... |

Admranger, Rush Snakes and Arrows is just ok. A bit tipped up. The drum solo is awesome however. I really like the 2112 blu ray audio disc and the redbook version has 3 live songs added that are excellent.

Tobb, his vocals are getting a little old but vocals in general on the BR are very good. Royal Albert Hall is a great place to record live and it shows on both Adele and Gilmore. The whole venue is very good but Adele's voice is fresh and stunning on her BR. The opening bass on Gilmore's BR is startling. I have two JL Audio F113's and I would have to say if you want to test your subs to see just how good or poor they are this is the BR to do that with. Very clean bass. |

We are running Whisper XDs with a Coda 15.0 and 7X Pre and there is nothing they can't handle.
The bass is pristine!
Unless the recordings are that poor and then the system only magnifies the garbage! lol

my favorites: Jewel The Essential Live Somgbook: Live at the Rialto theatre is by far the best acoustic recoding I heard today.
The Police Certifiable: Low freq. are stunning, difinition of high's are also impressive.
25th Ann Rock&Roll hall of fame: most of the recordings are very gut. Metallica misses the drive in the low freq. |

JP1208: Are you referring the heartbeats at the beginning song of the 1st DVD of the Gilmore DVD? I guess I wasn't impressed by the bass so that means I have some work to do with bass management... |
Admranger, just the overall bass in general is very good and clean. The heartbeats get a little carried away but is very clean and will test your amp and how well it can control the speakers low end. This will also test your room and let you know if your room is putting out unwanted frequencies. I think they increased the db's on the heartbeat so if you can control those beats you can just about control anything.
There are test track cd's out there that can help with bass management. I have the XRCD24 bit Sheffield drum test disc which is great for bass management.
Lately I have been spinning the DVD-A of Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues and Dire Straits SACD of BIA.
If you like Talking Heads the DVD-A 5.1 mixes are a lot of fun and done very well and I'm not much into mixes.
Again, I think these discs have bass that is very well done with a little more detail and clarity going to Dire Straits SACD. |

Just got Santana Greatest Hits Live at Montreaux, a July, 2011 concert. His greatest songs, mainly from the Abraxas and Santana albums with some newer ones like Smooth and Maria Maria.
Fantastic concert and the whole band is really smokin on this one. This is a must for Santana fans. |
We better add another - Eagle Farewell 1 Tour-Live from Melbourne, finally available on Blu-ray.
Just watched it last night in its entirety, all 30 tracks. Had seen it before on HD-DVD but that disc was lossy Dolby. This one is uncompressed DTS Master and I now have a new reference disc for multi-channel sound. Simply spectacular audio!
Having a dual purpose Music/HT system, every time I start thinking of replacing my multi-channel power amp with a better 2 channel amp because I seldom use more than 2 channels (occasional movie or concert), something like this disc comes around. And it reminds me just how good digital can be for music when done right.
Problem is there are just so few of them. |
