The Good Stuff

There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds. If it sounds good it's successful; if it doesn't it has failed. --  Duke Ellington

This purpose of this thread is to provide a place to post outstanding examples of the Good Music.

Abby Lincoln has a "unique" voice which takes some time to warm up to like Cassandra Wilson, Terez Montcalm, Frazey Ford.

To me she has a similar vocal sound as Jimmy Scott

 Another classic Skylark

Good stuff.    What do you think of Abbey Lincoln as a singer?  I never liked her voice, but maybe that's just me.  Ronstadt and Fitzgerald were great.  Wilson was her usual self.  Whatever that is.  But as a great diva once said, Its a Saxophone World.   Its Stitt!!

Have you listened to

Ayo - Afro Blue

magos herrera afro blue

Not until now.  Both are nice tunes, but Ayo is the better version of Afro Blue.

Of course, all are good, but Big John takes first prize. :)

Questions for The Frogman:

What is the deal with 'exposition repeats'?   Was it mandatory that the composer write them in the piece?  Talk abou it.

Thanks

Female singers singing the Blues.  The first one was actually posted by The Frogman on JFA.   So I know he knows the real thing when he hears it.  Sometimes he just wants to, as Acman3 would say, start a ruckus.

Frogman - re the Jackie Venson, her guitar playing is very good...electric and acoustic + she has great (and, to my ear, unique) tone. Her band is tight and the recording SQ is excellent (listened to the studio version of Love Transcends). The songs are good...some are strong. Agree with Rok, however...her voice, while good, ain’t the best for the blues. A little too white if I’m allowed to say such these days. There’s a place for superb diction. The blues ain’t that place. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. I expect I will be listening to it again.

Greetings to you, Frogman. I’ll be interested to read what rok has against Berklee.

Just finished listening to Cedar Walton’s Eastern Rebellion (the first one w/George Coleman). Another debt to Orpheus’ aficionados thread. Really like George Coleman’s tone throughout (and his 5/4 Thing composition very much).

Mode for Joe opened up today. Got intrigued and ended up with Joe Henderson’s album of that name. Cedar Walton also playing.. Old hat for many of you, but mostly all new to me with miles to go before I sleep.

Jackie Venson:

Band was good. Her voice not the best for blues.

Born in the Right State, went to the wrong school. I knew something was wrong.

Jackie Venson is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Austin, Texas. She graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2011. -- Wiki

Yes, they usually do have a relationship to the tune being played. While improvising, the harmonic progression of the tune being played may cause the player to think of a melody, or fragment of a melody of a different tune which has the same (or similar) chord progression. Sometimes it is done to add a bit of humor to the proceedings. Maybe as an “inside” joke for the sake of the other players, or for a variety of other intents. For instance, in your clip Stormy Monday Blues, Muddy Waters sings “They call it Stormy Monday………Saturday I go out to play” and Clark answers with “It ain’t necessarily so, it ain’t necessarily so”. Great improvisers have very quick and creative minds, as you know.

The place where Wynton’s and the boys play is a very nice part of town. Lincoln Center is great. Other parts of the city still haven’t recovered from the COVID shutdown and things like public transportation have taken a big hit. Still impressive, no doubt.

Speaking of Clark Terry, Wynton’s boys and the plunger mute:
