The Good Stuff

There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind ... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds. If it sounds good it's successful; if it doesn't it has failed. --  Duke Ellington

This purpose of this thread is to provide a place to post outstanding examples of the Good Music.

 Another classic Skylark

Good stuff.    What do you think of Abbey Lincoln as a singer?  I never liked her voice, but maybe that's just me.  Ronstadt and Fitzgerald were great.  Wilson was her usual self.  Whatever that is.  But as a great diva once said, Its a Saxophone World.   Its Stitt!!

Have you listened to

Ayo - Afro Blue

magos herrera afro blue

Not until now.  Both are nice tunes, but Ayo is the better version of Afro Blue.

Of course, all are good, but Big John takes first prize. :)

Questions for The Frogman:

What is the deal with 'exposition repeats'?   Was it mandatory that the composer write them in the piece?  Talk abou it.

Thanks

Female singers singing the Blues.  The first one was actually posted by The Frogman on JFA.   So I know he knows the real thing when he hears it.  Sometimes he just wants to, as Acman3 would say, start a ruckus.

Got the quote.  What is the point of quotes?  Do they have to have any relationship to the tune being played?

Based on what I see from my "city walkers",  NYC is still the most impressive city.  Once they passed by the place where Wynton and boys play.

Now, what Gershwin (hint) tune does Clark quote?

I could not detect the quote. If he had not used that silly mute, I might have. The curse of Miles. Muddy even drowned him out.

The performance does show how Jazz and Blues can meld seamlessly.

I am well. How are things in the Big Apple? The Governor here in Texas offered me a free bus ticket if I would move there. What a guy!

Mary Jo,

I like it also.  Had to look him up.  From wiki:

What is the meaning of Gnossienne?

Noun. gnossienne (plural gnossiennes) (music, often capitalized) Any of several compositions having a dance-like quality.

How old was Satie when he died?

The French composer and pianist Erik Satie died at the age of 59 in Arcueil, a suburb of Paris. The cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver; Satie had long been a heavy drinker. Absinthe, which can have an alcohol content as a high as 74%, was his favorite.

Did Erik Satie carry a hammer?

Erik Satie | San Francisco Classical Voice

In the habit: Satie was a man of habits: every day he walked the 10 miles from his house to work, stopping at cafès along the way. He always carried an umbrella, and he stowed a hammer beneath his coat to defend himself if necessary.

Not a man to be trified with.

Cheers
