Recommendations for digital recording device?

Yesterday, I received the Denon DN-900R. It’s sold out in a lot of places and I had been waiting on it but I found Markertek, a broadcast supply house, that had it in stock so I got it right away.

I hooked it to my Tape Loop 1 inputs and outputs on my preamp and at first I could not get it working. Well, I discovered that it defaults to balanced inputs even when unbalanced cables are plugged in.

Once I set that in Preset 1, and there are something like 39 options in the Presets, lol, it works great! No more waiting for tape to rewind,

I am especially excited to getting the web server up and running so I can program the recordings of broadcasts from a web browser on my computer. That’s going to be slick. I had to order a long network cable for it.

I’m using a 128GB USB stick but have purchased a 1TB one to use instead.
I think the unit sounds great and it is loads of fun to use.

The old days of making tapes was a lot of fun and this brings some of that back. It may seem silly to some but a lot of programs are broadcast once and never rebroadcast or set up for on demand streaming.

Now, I’ll be able to capture some of them. If people know of good broadcasts of, say, live concerts, let me know.

Well, I’m not expecting the highest quality level from anything streamed over the net. The sound quality from analog FM is better but I am sure it goes through a digital stage at some point. 
 

Sometimes the content is more important than the sound quality.

Wow, no repair support? That's sad. 

I know there are not enough repair places as I have my amplifier in for repair at SoundSmith and they have been slammed with work. They're great guys, and I'm willing to be patient. 

Just a warning about Tascam. There is zero repair support. What a nightmare!

Great point cleeds! Where do you record live broadcasts? 

The old days, with tape, were a lot of fun, because people created their own mix tapes and traded them around. 

I wish I were able to find and stream every live broadcast easily but it just does not seem possible given issues with rights. 

My wife and I used to listen to a radio program of music from the 1920s and 30s when we lived in New York. It was entitled The Big Broadcast. It was so much fun. 

To me, the radio is a friendly voice in the home. I used to date a classical DJ and she would announce the weather for me given my location, lol. It was great fun to hang out in the studio and watch her work.

One reason to record from FM: Live broadcasts. It's amazing how great they can sound when the station cares about SQ. And, being live, there's no other way to hear it.

I stream lossless from both Tidal and Qobuz under Roon to an Aqua Formula DAC, so I am well acquainted with streaming. I pay about $50 a month and am impressed with the quality. 

Still, streaming does not replace good FM broadcasts. The idea is that someone who knows more than I do introduces me to new music. I don't always want to be the DJ. 

With a recording device, I can record programs from my local FM stations that I would miss because I am asleep. I will also be able to record from a large number of radio stations that stream under Roon.

Its digital output into my Formula DAC is stunning, the best FM I have ever heard.

Why would you even do this when there’s CD or hi-res library of content through streaming.  Have you not heard of streaming?   You wanna spend $$$ on a recording device for FM?  Really???  I feel like we’re going back 20 years in time here and can’t fathom why anyone would wanna do this.  Scratching my head here.

I ordered the Denon DN-900R and will report on how it goes.

Thanks. I have a portable Tascam unit but I think I’d want to be able to schedule a recording. If I am already listening to something, I doubt I would ever go back and listen to it again. 

I use an old Edirol R-09HR portable, but any of the portable recorders that record to SD cards with a line in jack from TASCAM, Zoom, Roland, etc. will work. $100-500 depending on features you think you’ll need.

I use a y cable to go from RCA out on my streamer/pre amp to the 1/8 line in on my recorder. I only record to 24/48 since the streams of the classical radio stations I listen vary in quality, and none of them are hi-rez so I don’t waste the HD space. I suppose I would get some improvement recording streams to 24/96, but I save the higher fidelity for live recording of concerts.

The tape out on your device should be line level, and work in the way I described. Good luck!
