Question for Vandersteen owners
I have been enjoying my Vandersteen 2ci speakers every time I listen to them. I have purchase these from a local seller who only used them for a few times. He even had the original boxes and to make matter better, the company is only about 40 min away.
The sound from this model is very impressive, in fact just what I was looking for. When I first hooked up the speakers to a B&K ST2140 amp let me tell you, I am amazed how they sound. Very natural with great tonal balance. I have read that 2c models tend to have a natural roll off at the top end but really I tend to believe that is a natural roll off in a right way. On the contrast, the bass coupler driver have a nice natural bass response but I feel is was still missing something. Honestly I can live the 2ci without a subwoofer and given that the speaker have a response down in 40s, I think it didnt have the articulate, punchy bass response but more of a natural bass for some music which I am ok with to. I listen mostly rock, latin, and country(mostly 70s to early 90s) and not limited to any other so you can see where I going with.
A few weeks later after the audition of the speakers, I wanted to try a subwoofer in the system. After dialing the sub with the proper setting, I have to admit that it took the lower octaves to a whole new level. It made the Vandersteen sound much more impressive given that 2ci is ran in full range and the sub LPF at about 50hz. For the sub I am using a HSU STF-2 which is great but just have the simple basic feature. I can only imagine Going with a SVS, Rythmik, or even HSU VTF series model.
So my question is, any Vandersteen owners have tried a subwoofer with these speakers and was an improvement to the sound overall?
Yes I have two Vandersteen 2ce Sig2 mated with two Rythmik Subwoofers F12G-SE-PEQ. It takes patience to dial in the subwoofers to match well with speakers and placement must be just right. In fact, one may not like where the subwoofers sound the best in your room, I have had to move them to the corners of my room behind the main speakers. But once this is accomplished, the subwoofers do add another level of bass and mid bass which fills out the frequency spectrum much better. I also had to adjust the middle frequency on the dial for the speakers. Blending a very good speaker to a very capable subwoofer requires much listening, adjusting, moving and even some EQ help, but I didn't use that tool... |
You sort of need their cross over wen running their sub. And a mixed system with 2-channel, and home theatre can get challenging.
Are you on RCAs or XLRs? There are some logical reasons why one does not see them regularly flooding the used market.

@holmz I was thinking about getting the Vandy sub but at the moment they are hard to find in my area especially one without the crossover. |
