Spector had been pulling guns on people for decades (he shot off a round in the studio while producing Lennon's Rock & Roll album, a real piece of trash), and locking people in his Castle, refusing to let them out (including The Ramones). A lot of people let him get away with it for a long time, looking the other way because of his legendary status in the music biz. Happens in film and politics too. In fact, with celebrity in general. Celebrity is now the gauge of wealth in the U.S.A., if not the entire world. |
God bless Phil Spector. A troubled but wonderfully brilliant life. Here’s a great Spector quote from 1996. “It became apparent that the people around Ms Dion were more interested in controlling the project, and the people who recorded her, than in making history. One thing they should have learnt long ago. You don’t tell Shakespeare what plays to write, or how to write them. You don’t tell Mozart what operas to write, or how to write them. And you certainly don’t tell Phil Spector what songs to write, or how to write them; or what records to produce and how to produce them.” He also happened to record my favourite version of Spanish Harlem. Simply beautiful. https://youtu.be/_LUdPaFRB60 |

@tvad Do not know much about St. Peter, but I just Googled Spector. The Google hits say that he was convicted of 2nd degree murder in 2009. I understand he died in prison (or at an offsite hospital). I hope he repented (did teshuva) before he died. And I agree with you that he was talented and produced some really great hits that still put a smile on my face. BIF |
