New Goats Head Soup

So this has a DR on the main CD of 4-7. Not even going to bother. Doesn't matter what else they may have done. For me it's toast.

It's pretty well known that most Stones albums are fairly dire SQ wise.
All I can tell you is that this version in Qobuz hires sounds better than most.
A DR of 4-7 is simply a waste. Thanks for the head’s up and for saving me a couple of sawbucks.
Disk 3 of this new release is great.

My Stones remixes from the early 90's were some of my best digital disks. I think it was the Virgin Remasters.
Here’s the DR on a few other GHS in my collection.

1994 Virgin remaster: 11 (10-12)
1986 CBS: 11 (10-11)
2009 UMG: 6 (5-7)
2013 HR Cutting (continuing from the 2002 ABKCO remaster program): 10 (9-11)

Bear in mind I’m only talking about DR not overall SQ. But to me low DR = bad sound.

Also the 2009 UMGs (for all releases) are generally thought to be the worst overall sounding of all the RS remastering programs.
Details. Look at the peak as well, all against the wall at -.2db. Hack job.

@yyzsantabarbara

Lots of folks like the Virgins. I agree they're pretty good.

I like the resolution of the remaster program started in 2002 with Bob Ludwig but they can be a bit tizzy for some.
@jaybe  I am currently listening to disk 3. Is that live concert also messed up from your readings? It is hard to tell with concerts since they tend to be of average sound quality. Whatever, the case I am really getting into disk 3. Have not listened to disk 1 or 2.
@yyzsantabarbara Here’s the disc 3 readings. Yeah, still low. But at least it’s new material like disc 2 as well so worth the listen.

I listened to it on Qobuz and thought it sounded quite good.  I have at least a couple of copies on vinyl and thought this sounded better from memory.  I didn't dig out my vinyl and A/B it, I just enjoyed it.
I like when threads of classics come up. I pull out my bin find that I haven't played in awhile.

My $6.00 1973 gatefold record club pressing sounds like a Stones record should. Lofi, but free of ticks/stitches.

These are my numbers run by the DR plugin in foobar. They match what I've seen elsewhere.
@uberwaltz,

’It’s pretty well known that most Stones albums are fairly dire SQ wise.’

Yes, unfortunately the sound quality only began to improve as the Rolling Stones music got worse.

Still, there’s little excuse to compromise the existing quality by squashing it to make it sound like inoffensive background supermarket Muzak.

Even if they believe it usually shifts far more units sounding like that.

Thank You for posting. Saved me a few bucks as well.

Happy Listening!
Darn it! @slaw  I already have a couple of copies of this and it sounds like I might have to get another.  I listened to a couple of songs off Qobuz again last night and while it definitely does not have a lot of dynamic range, it sounds really good.  Did the vinyl sound compressed?
@big_greg,

I did a mini review on our "What's on your turntable tonight" thread,
I listened to the hirez stream on Qobuz and it sounds really good. I think I'm the 3rd person in this thread that has been impressed by the streaming SQ.   I pulled out my album from my box set from 2016 and played it.  The vinyl didn't sound as good as the Qobuz stream.  That's a rarity for me because I prefer vinyl almost 100% of the time compared to hirez digital.  I may have to buy the 2020 half speed remastered vinyl LP based on how the stream sounds.  I really don't care about the DR numbers.  I suspect the new half speed vinyl provides the best SQ.
