New 4K TV; how do I best stream audio through older integrated amp

I have an i3.3 Moon Integrated with built in DAC and balanced inputs, but no HDMI in to take advantage of the 4K audio content from my new TV. Any recommendations on how to approach this?

Thanks, Chris

Don’t worry too much about resolution with 2 channel data rates. They are pretty low, around 48 kHz. Yes, running from your TV’s digital outs to your moon is the simplest best sounding method for your current set up.

When you are ready to step up consider an Anthem MRX 540. You can use it for all your HDMI needs, power center and surround speakers, and send your L and R to your Moon.

"but 4K streams at a higher rate, correct? Any way to take advantage?"

Not correct. 4K is a video standard.  24/96 audio will get you there for stereo

unless you want to process Dolby Atmos  or similar protocol, usually via HDMI and a different digital receiver than your Moon.

A follow up:

So, the TOSLINK protocol supports audio resolutions up to 24/96, but 4K streams at a higher rate, correct? Any way to take advantage?

Also, I have an old Oppo 95. Is it possible to mod that so it can read 4K UHD disks?

Again, thanks!

Thanks all! I went the digital toslink route into the DAC in the Simaudio-Moon, and it sounds great.

HDMI kind of sucks anyway. Hand off issues etc. I hate the interface, but it is what it is. As others have mentioned, your tv will have digital out, possibly coax rca, but probably Toslink. Easy to do.

On the converter subject, anyone have a good recommendation for a Toslink to coax rca converter? I have Toslink out but need RCA in…

This I didn’t know existed. Thankyou. See, sometimes its just little random bits of information that perhaps everyone else takes for granted but I didn’t know about.

The TV has only RCA in, and HDMI which I used once or twice with a reasonably good soundbar (its not a Bose, and I still didn’t like it).

Should I require a DAC, well, that’s something I’ll find out.  One thing at a time.

HDMI to RCA converter

Chris,

You definitely want to use the superior DAC in your Moon amp for digital processing, and not the one in your TV.  If you have a TOSLINK - digital Out connection on your TV (highly likely), This will give you a great Stereo digital feed into your DAC.  The TOSLINK protocol supports audio resolutions up to 24/96.

This turned out to be the best connection for me - from my Sony HDR TV into an extra Bel Canto DAC that I had around.  Incredible high resolution audio.

good luck.

None of my TVs have HDMI out so I have no experience. I think you gonna need a DAC.

Or use digital coaxial output to your DAC inputs. Next choice would be optical, but I find stereo signal to have the best clarity. Have fun.
