Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Rok, how many zero's is in $2.3 trillion?

12?   What's this all about?  Is this how much the Jazz Queen is worth?

Cheers
Actually, 11.  The Jazz Queen is worth far more than that.  $2.3T is a bargain for that kind of infrastructure 😊.

The Frogman and I agree at last!

Rok, well, than there is another number, very close to the first one, of 2.4 trillion (still not sure how many zero's are there)

Roughly, that would be something little bit more of 16 000 usd per tax payer. ( for those two numbers combined)

Any ideas yet?

(have few more numbers to add)
Is this related to the people's socialist budget under consideration by the  politburo oooops, I mean by the congress, in Washington?

Reminds me of this:  The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

A human and musical tragedy.  Too bad their fathers and brothers did not fight for them.  Humans always seem to fight harder for evil than against it.

Given my brain fart, from  now on I will refer to these two trumpet greats by their full names: Lee Hubbard and Freddie Morgan...er.... wait...
Roxy, sometimes there is a slightly detour here, but its because this part of forum is not so visited by many...its just enterteinment, dont worry....

Rok, no, those numbers are (according to Brown university data) costs of Us last two 'excursions', not counting the interest payments (since its borrowed money) and cost of future medical care for its participants.

There are more examples, not only from Us, but from European countries as well.
Trying to stay away from politics, just a simple thought,,,if all that money was spent otherwise, I guess we would see less 'issues' than likes of the one that you have posted in that video on the previous page...

Alex, I thank you so very much for that information.

According to Keegiam, Freddie "whoever's" solo is too strident.

According to Frogman, "Also, he spends a lot of time on the high register at the beginning of his solo; rather unusual for Morgan who really wasn’t a great high note player. I can understand the “strident” comment."

With that in mind....................

However, I thank you Alex and I will add that to my collection as soon as possible.
One heck of a way of “staying away from politics”.

Oh, but if only they were “good intentions”…..! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I’m slipping. I have now violated one of my own rules. See, keegiam10 we all have brain farts on occasion; of one kind or another. So, no worries. Good to see you posting again. Nice retort, btw. 😊

Nice response to the retort for "The mutual admiration society" but you failed to cover up your own tracks.

One of the greatest tunes in "Jazz history" that included one of the greatest solos in Jazz History, played by one of the greatest trumpet players in jazz history, and you have the gall to throw in one of your "trite" criticisms.
Since I have been given the honor of being quoted please allow me to clarify my comment since, honor given aside, the comment has not been correctly understood.

Contrary to the accusation , I never said that, on the solo in question, Morgan spent too much time playing in the high register; nor, did I say what register he should be playing in.  My comment was strictly a statement of fact.  Morgan, great as he was, was not a great high note player and has never been considered to be one.  Were one to speak to trumpet players that comment would be corroborated.  That fact is no indication of the quality of his solo which was great as always.  “Perfect”?  A purely subjective call and I suspect that as is the case with most great artists, Morgan would be the first to say that it was not perfect.   “One of the greatest solos in Jazz history”?  That comment would probably piss Morgan off.

Great improvisers will often exploit their own technical shortcomings in order to create tension in the emotional content of a solo….a good thing, musically.  I suspect that “strident” is exactly how he wanted to sound at the beginning of his solo when he “spent a lot of time on the high register”.

I hope that clarifies.

The more you try to clarify the mudddier it gets.  Why don't  you go for broke and try one more time.

I used to think like that, I thought, boy, what they could have done with all that money, then, as I grew older and understood more, I learned that when the Policies, the programs, the weapon systems or the actions /  'excursions' disappear, so does the money that funds them.

So if you want to help with the situation discussed in my clip, you would have to go to the congress and ask for $2.4 trillion to stop the migration of Africans / Muslims  into Europe.  ahahahahahahahahahahaha.  Sorry.  A spontaneous outburst.

Cheers
Sorry, O-10; sorry that my explanation did not serve to clarify things for you. As always, and for the sake of good (better?) will in the thread, I would encourage you to consider how heavy handed and insulting some of your comments come across. Particularly ironic in this case since you, yourself, did not know that it was Morgan playing.

Peace.

Interesting recordings that may clarify best of all.  Featuring both Morgan and Hubbard, I think the only time they recorded together:

Saw that one coming! 😊

Mickey: Your nose is broken.
Rocky Balboa: How does it look?
Mickey: Ah, it’s an improvement.

"Particularly ironic in this case since you, yourself, did not know that it was Morgan playing."

What are you talking about? Are you trying to rewrite history? You just make any old off the wall statement, and hope it will stick as fact. Talk about taking desperate measures; that takes the cake.

You seem to have forgotten that I began this thread on 02-24-2013 10:12am with that exact same album; maybe you have amnesia but I don't.

Rok, not even when I was much younger, I had no illusions of a sort you mention.
But, regarding the theme of that video, it is no surprise to me at all to see such things happening, especially after all the things western world did or failed to do (not only in this or previous century)

<<According to Keegiam, Freddie "whoever's" solo is too strident.>>

No, I said it's TOO STRIDENT FOR ME, and explained that it could be my hyperacusis.  FOR ME = MY opinion in MY world, not some kind of official proclamation that should be taken as an insult by the jazz gods.  There's a lot of Coltrane that is TOO STRIDENT FOR ME.  Oops, am I allowed to say that?

O10, it's good to see you back, but you remain one of the most abrasive personalities I've encountered in many years on various forums.  It's also nice to know you've never had a senior moment late at night.  Let the Freddie gaffe go, please.  It's getting really old.

Alex,

I will break my off topic pledge to myself.

All forms of Government work well, if the government is benevolent to the people, but people are involved and at best we are selfish idiots.

In my opinion capitalism gives me the carrot I need to kick ass everyday,  and overcome the lazy selfish idiot who lives in me.

Perhaps  this  on been on here , but as I could listen to it about 10 hours a day,
maybe someone might like a few minutes .

P.S .  Take a 2 weeks to Denmark and see lots of  non-selfish and intelligent  folks ac .
Might be just me , but seems to me almost all bands do their best
in Copenhagen , maybe the girls ?

Not that Basie and Co. needed anything but themselves !

" I love Scofield. But, a must-have?"

Have you heard the 2 cds he's done with J. Lovano?

"Time On My Hands"

"Meant To Be"

OR, Joe Henderson's "So Near-- So Far-- Musings for for Miles".

If your preference is for Scofield the Jazzer, I believe you should check these out. I'm personally not a fan of his more commercial stuff and therefore cannot offer any recommendations in that regard.

The whole point of the piece was this;

When the TRUTH is no longer allowed to be spoken or heard, written or read, it's game, set, match.  So, how do you enslave the world?  First control the schools.  Then the press / media / internet.  Then destroy the meaning of the language.

All empires fall , in general for what looks like various reasons .

Every one of the Twenty since time immoral had one thing in common .

The people thought it could never could .
.
Slow down, stewartk!  I think you got something (or someone) mixed up.  What post are you referring to?  Can’t think of ever referring to a Scofield recording as a must have.  I do like his work, including his more commercial things; and yes I am familiar with those, but thanks.

Thanks for these frogman.....

I am in love with organ or piano guitar duos...

Frogman i begin to listen and i cannot thank you enough...

I did not know them....

My deepest respects....
@frogman

Those "Hand Jive" tracks are amazing.  Just ordered it.  Tone meister indeed - love the growl Scofield gets on this one, seemingly regardless of where he goes on the fret board.

Live with Lovano, who must have been stoked by the way Scofield backed his solos:

As above, Strident, is what makes Coltrane a legendary Jazz hero.

Happy Listening!

Frogman, I'm still waiting for your explanation for this post. I would like for you to point out when and where it was that I did not know it was Lee Morgan playing.

PUT UP OR SHUT UP!
Stop the Fight , please.

To frogperson and all .

This is the most remarkable thing in music I have ever seen !

To be able to play the oboe with such intonation at 10 years of age is remarkable.  To be able to feel and know how to turn a phrase at his age is amazing!  God bless him.  If I were to learn that he also makes his own reeds I would fall off my chair.
That phrase made me jump out of my chair, like a good professional !

I know Italy makes many fine musicians but this kid , in a Catholic Church and so humble ........................................ God has Blessed Him Greatly .
This is the most remarkable thing in music I have ever seen !

Remember that boys name    Nicolò Pellegrino
I wont forget it
