I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

Great tracks, thanks Mr. Frog. Despite your warning that the second was faster, I was still surprised by the degree. Being a relative newbie, I'm a little concerned with the fall-off in posting. Kind of selfish since I've been soaking it up, and my life has gotten crazy again. Maybe the long-time members can provide perspective - was the OP an "attention vortex"? Too many henchmen? Seasonal? |
by Peppino Gagliardi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kffaKHD4v9w I am listening this all day. And I think I will cry. :--) Because of the beauty of the song. Of the beauty that I can see from my window today. Sunset playing tenderly with clouds. The play reveals in all kinds of colours. Un Amore Grande between sun and clouds. ~~~ Or it is something in me? |
Being a relative newbie, I'm a little concerned with the fall-off in posting. Kind of selfish since I've been soaking it up, and my life has gotten crazy again.I hope things will be better for you soon. We are here already for quite a while. Top team is here from the beginning so it is like in love, at first is passionate and lovers are very busy with their hands typing...they want to get to know each other better and they type and type... When they fall in love things become slower, they already know so much about each other that typing at some point becomes sufficient because they know what the other one will type as soon as one put their computer on. For you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0oLYCdoDC8 |
by Peppino GagliardiI like this song Marija and I saw another by the same artist which I liked as well. And sometimes they do not know how much power they have over us.As I aged I became wiser with relationships. Now I try to give advice to my daughters who are in their 30’s. Its tragic to watch a loved one be hurt by someone they thought was caring and loving but was the opposite. MJ, a riveting post, thank you so much. I was planning to "stop by" for a few minutes to see if there were new posts, and it was like a wonderful wake-up call in reverse (it "woke me up" from my frantic day). Turned my day around 180 for awhile. **** I hope things will be better for you soon. **** I should have been more clear, sorry. My life has gotten crazy busy again (which is good for income), not just plain "crazy again." Your concern is touching! **** When they fall in love things become slower, they already know so much about each other that typing at some point becomes sufficient because they know what the other one will type as soon as one put their computer on. **** Superb analogy! **** For you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0oLYCdoDC8 **** Thanks so much - beautiful composition, beautiful piano. It was only after joining the forum I even became aware of "Lotus Blossom," and I didn't stop to listen. I was looking up Yusef Lateef's "Plum Blossom" and recall seeing the title but moving on. Thankfully you brought it to my attention; if it were on one of the recordings I have, I'm sure I would know it. Hard to believe this coincidence! You made immediately listening and responding a must - what a splendid half hour break! |
Some songs and singers are mysterious... It is not jazz and i apologize... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I But it reveal why music is about soul...Whatever the style diffrence or nevermind the genre difference.... Like in "soul music", like Otis Reading singing " the dock of the bay", when i listened to him from a small transistor radio when i was 14 years old, without knowing what is "soul" but feeling it for the first time perhaps.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyPKRcBTsFQ |
@mahgister Bold post, thanks! Enjoyable ukelele number. Who can resist that tune (and scenery)? Uke videos have multiplied like rabbits, with predictable outcomes. For me, the best are enjoyable because of our emotional attachment to certain songs. I can't forget one particular amateur cover of Amy Winehouse's "Love is a Losing Game." We all know it's not about musicianship or SQ. |
@mahgister I had a 7" 45 RPM vinyl copy of "THE DOCK OF THE BAY" on the "Volt" label. I was about 10 years old at the time. I also post music from time to time that is not jazz. Yesterday I posted a couple of Bee Gees tunes after our resident bird watcher Marija had brought up the relationship/love topic. The "OVER THE RAINBOW" on the ukulele is cool. This ukulele (banjo) song is probably the most well known in the USA. Fast forward to 2:45. @mahgisterThanks for your interesting links Over the rainbow is one of my tune for sure like most of us..... I wish you the best.... |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rd8VktT8xYWow beautiful.... Very different then my favorite version but on par with it because of the difference in the way emotions are communicated between the 2 but with complete truthfulness in the expression... Combative viril moving trust in one side, vibrant fragile growing and touching hope on the feminine side... Thanks |
Beautiful versions all, of this most beautiful song. Thanks! https://youtu.be/AyLQGDIrGcI Still, there’s something about young Judy Garland’s...... https://youtu.be/PSZxmZmBfnU |
That’s truly a lovely version of Over the Rainbow. Can’t help but bring a tear to your eye to watch and listen to Eva Cassidy singing it, knowing that’s the sweet somewhere she surely is now. And thanks Mary_jo for the link to Benny Golson’s "Lullaby of Birdland a few days ago. That was enjoyable to listen to. Mike |
Birthday celebration time! Today is the birthday of two of the giants of Jazz. Not much that hasn’t been posted here by or about Charles Mingus and Paul Chambers. A lesser known player celebrating a birthday today and one who hasn’t gotten much attention here is the great West Coast tenor player Don Menza. One of the great tenor sounds, IMO; very distinctive and soulful: https://youtu.be/c1M64tqocVw https://youtu.be/LZ8ExNe8hKA https://youtu.be/0IRnST0tP7M https://youtu.be/olTWsbUdpyY https://youtu.be/LGVMu2n6eZM Anyone unfamiliar with the name Don Menza may be surprised to learn that his great tenor sound is not totally unfamiliar 😉: https://youtu.be/Q0RutCQ4oQk |

pjw, I can’t even tell how many times I’ve listened that song from Bee Gees To Love Somebody. Its tragic to watch a loved one be hurt by someone they thought was caring and loving but was the opposite.I guess we all have been there at some point in our lives, more or less involved. You learn a lesson and move on. Life is unstoppable, another chance for love will come for sure, with the opportunity to love again, this time with wiser head and heart. |

Great Monk rok Here is another live monk recording that gets a lot of repeated plays this way. **Thelonious Monk - Big Band and Quartet** Monk’s third album for Columbia Records, recorded live at the newly completed Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center, NYC, on Monday, December 30, 1963. The original LP release omits three compositions, "Bye-Ya," "Misterioso," and "Light Blue," and to save space also Dunlop’s drum solos were edited out. The entire unedited concert was released in 1994 as a two-disk album. I have the complete 2 disc concert 1994 mentioned above which includes 3 of the following 4 songs that were omitted on the original LP. Saxophones are Phil Woods on alto and Charlie Rouse on tenor and Steve Lacy on soprano. Thad Jones on cornet and Nick Travis on trumpet. Eddie Bert on trombone and Gene Allen on Baritone Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Clarinet. Butch Warren on bass. Frank Dunlop on drums. Phil Woods also plays the Clarinet on a few songs. +1 pjw. Great Monk, Rok. New to me, “Plus Two” goes on the shopping list. **** When you first hear the Saxophone, you know it's Monk. How can that be? **** It’s called genius. Not to take anything away from Charlie Rouse’s own genius, but some band leaders have such a powerful musical identity that a great sideman can get pulled into that leader’s “zone” to such a degree that his playing reflects the leader’s personality. Charlie Rouse’s tone and approach with Monk has always been a great extension of Monk’s quirky style. A while back I posted some of his stuff as a leader and it showed a different, but equally great, sound and style. Btw, while I’ve always liked Harold Land’s playing, I can’t say he has ever been a favorite. This is probably the best I’ve heard Land sound. Another testament to Monk’s genius? Notice how incredibly together and tight Monk and Rouse are playing this typically Monkish disjointed and obtuse melody. Very hard to do and not heard too often: https://youtu.be/qweSlfP6BtI |
