Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Schubert, great player, Brönner.  Very nice sound and great chops.  I like his playing a lot.

I agree Frogperson .
I feel lower than low . Can’’t go to Winnipeg for July 1 their 4th , can’t go to Spain (or any where else in EU) which was on my bucket list for this year , Too old to drive more than 300 miles a day and on an on and on.
As much as I do respect our Great Leader I still wear masks when out though.

This guy cheered me out on my car radio yesterday !

Ain’t nothing better than pure beauty ! Never heard him but sounds like a stick master to me .Almost like a soprano at times .
@frogman

Today is the great Eric Dolphy’s birthday!

Thanks for the reminder. May have to play Eric Dolphy/Booker Little ‘At the Five Spot’ today.
aceman, I like Vignola as well. not much he can't do with a guitar !

Almost posted him few times , thought he would not go-over .
Anyone feeling a little low today?
Only today? You are good! :--)

It's Saturday today, in case somebody has forgotten.

Schubert, you may check conections to Europe via London. US and Uk held plane lines despite cancelled flights from US to EU.

Happy Fathers Day to all you fathers out there!

I don’t think any Jazz father has gotten more attention in recent years than the recently passed Ellis Marsalis, father of the Marsalis brothers. Wynton in particular has gotten more attention than just about any other Jazz player in recent years; and deservedly so. They say “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree”; and a fine tree it was! :

Good news for Monk fans --

https://www.npr.org/2020/06/19/880564012/a-previously-unreleased-thelonious-monk-concert-is-coming-n...

You can never have too much Monk.  He may have repeated his repertoire, but in true jazz fashion each playing was different.
We seem to be neglecting one of THE greatest jazz players alive who also has has a brilliant mind and a beautiful soul !

Espetacular , Maestro !

At the Frost School .

Thanks, Pryso;  I was not aware of this release,  Sure would be interesting to know who that janitor was who understood the importance of making the recording....and tuning the piano.  True music lover.

He can do anything frogman as you know . From what I read the classical base in Cuba was outstanding .And he and God did the rest .

Re; Frost School . I am 15 minutes away from the U of MN hall’/s for their 800 music students and would rather go to a student recital , Jazz , Classical or Choral than any jet players around .

U of MN has some fabulous Choral teachers and the kids are as well .Hope springs eternal .

Gonzalo, to my hears , is in his wheelhouse on this .(if he had one) .

https://youtu.be/I8NaCNXgPVo
P.S . hearing him now his groove is like that of a Canary !
The other guys are good musicians , but he is in a different class , a much different class . Unbelievable .
Very nice Costa and Evans...

Schubert, in case if you change your mind, you would be welcome...

Just think of what it would be like if the civil war had never been fought; then Mississippi and Texas would be south of the border.

mary jo, could a boy get by with 445, 000 HRK per anum in Zagreb or Gajnice?
For ca 66.000 USD per year? For half of that per year, 2 persons can live very comfortably, everywhere in Croatia.

Comfortable basic monthly costs for 2:
App ca 3000 HRK (450 USD)
Electricity, water, TV, internet and similar 2000 HRK (300 USD)
Food, drink, up to ca 6000 HRK (900 USD).
I am talking about healthy food (seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc...), not junk food.

Medicaments. Health care is for free but on some medicaments you pay extra, for instance: A person at 80 years old with high pressure, sugar, etc, spends 650 HRK (100 USD). For vitamins, minerals, extra stuff like that.
**
Clothing is cheap.
Fuel is ca 9 HRK/1 L (1,5 USD/1 L)
Dentist is either for free or from 300 (44 USD) to 400 HRK (60 USD) per intervention.
Hair cut 10 USD
Car maintenance per year ca 300 USD
***
Doctor at social care. For free. One pays extra 10 USD per month to cover additional expenses if any.
Doctor at private care (from 300 HRK/44 USD to 500 HRK/examination).

***
Weather - mild.
Food quality - good.
No racism.
Mostly friendly people.
Majority of younger people speaks english.
Water quality - in most of areas, we still drink the water from the pipe.
Air polution - if any, very mild.
Sea - mostly crystal clear.
Religion (mostly Catholicism) - stronger at older and rural population.
Street crime rate - extremely low, if any.
Women - mostly pretty.

Nothing much to add to that, just maybe trying to put it in the perspective.
For 5t usd per month (60t usd a year) you could have a lifestyle of rich man.

Meaning, you could rent any luxury place for living (in any great neighborhood in country, in any town, Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik) including help or service (cleaning, cooking or medical care) on daily basis.

On top of that, you would be able to afford to dine in about any restaurant of your choice, or get your food delivered to home from it.

Transport is cheap, no need to have a car, you could get a safe, clean and comfortable ride by taxi anytime day or night five minuts after you call it, that will get you anywhere and back, for a price of bag of peanuts.

Still, you would be left with enough money for any concert, cinema or social gathering...or travelling around the country, or suroundning ones (lots of great and diverse nature and places to see)

To be honest, aldo we have foreigners living here (they are quite domestcated now) I am surprised that we do not have much more of them, retired people at least

...and, virtually almost no 'bad neighbourhoods' in whole country (certainly not in any of major towns) meaning that small kids can go to school alone or that people living in smaller buildings are not even locking their doors and you can walk alone (man or female) in any part of town, any time of day or night (not that there is something to do at night, but still)

Crime is done by guys in politics, not on the streets.....

**** Women - mostly pretty. ****

Well, we knew that! 😊

I may have mentioned this at some point. My youngest son’s babysitter was the oldest daughter of a Croatian family that lived on our block. Some of the most wonderful and righteous people I have ever met (the girl is stunningly beautiful). The parents recently moved back to Croatia to their house in the country side. We have an open invitation to visit and hope to make it happen sometime. Sounds like a wonderful place.

I wonder the same thing.

.

Schubert, there are many private health practicies where you can get all the services that you need (to be honest, also much faster than from the oners sponsored by state)

Again, prices in comparation to the ones from the west (or better from the US) are not even 'in comparation' (much, much cheaper)
The general quality of those medical services is up to western standards

As for the major interventions, I know that foreigners are not charged for any interventions that occurs as a result of an accident (car crashes, etc) and the taking care of such people is not delayed because they are foreigners.

For continues medical treatments (for some chronical illnes) I could check and let you know.

As for religious needs, I am not an expert there, but just checked the web, here is what I found about the churches you asked for (in Zagreb)

There is an evangelistic lutheran church, baptist church and anglican church, with mass on english language, held 2 every second Sunday.

Of course among all others as well.

Let us know if you have any other questions (you can write me or Mary Jo on pm if you wish)

As we come to July 1 and 4th , the birthday of 2 lands I love , this year I am praying for the sailors of both nations who died in WW II .
An American Admiral wrote in "Naval Proceedings "the American Naval bible, a now famous article that showed how the Canadian ships that took the merchant ship convoys out of the Canadian ports  to the the Russian Port Of Murmansk
when  other Navies would  not , as the lost of ships and sailors escorting the
the huge amounts of American supplies , without which the Red Army
might not been able to do the heavy lifting that defeated the Germans  were heavy .Here is what they looked like . And the Hymn of the American , British
Canadian Navies .

https://youtu.be/2dlXmuYuAYc?t=2

And the seas were at least that bad for the last thousand miles .
P.S , The American Admiral stated, that man for man , those Canadian Sailors did more in WW II to win the war than any one else .

We have an open invitation to visit and hope to make it happen sometime. Sounds like a wonderful place.
You are very welcome here as well.
I was just about to answer to schubert when I saw that Ale covered pretty much all. Great.
So, what’s worse? To have to bite one’s ideological tongue and follow clearly stated guidelines in the context of an Internet forum (!?) that we choose to participate in in spite of those stated guidelines and where one interacts with (almost) complete strangers? Or, to give up the opportunity to spread the Jazz word so as not to forsake an unrelated personal principle. As a fellow Jazz lover with conservative leanings, it seems to me that it is not a particularly conservative attitude to “resign” from the thread for having to follow rules. If so, they won.

Over 1,700,000 views and God knows how many posts of examples of this great music (thanks, O-10); many (you would say “most” ☺️) of which you are responsible for. Not to mention the very principled attitude toward the music that you bring to the table. Agree or disagree on some of the particulars, there is no question that you love the music; and possibly even more importantly you understand the music and its history in some ways that some listeners never will. Music is of much higher value than the toys we play it back on. You get that.

I hope you reconsider, Rok. Besides, it’s possible your post had nothing to do with “that other thing”.

Now, where else will you see this posted; it will surely lure you back 😊:

You are correct Frogman. Hell, The Frogman is always correct. Temper Tantrum / Pouting session over. And as you said, maybe it wasn’t me after all. Could have been the Jazz Queen. :)

After reading your post on Stravinsky and Jazz, I listened to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkwqPJZe8ms

Look at the size of that orchestra!! This is almost as satisfying to watch as it is to hear. You once said Stravinsky was up there with Mozart et al. I thought that was ridiculous then. People can change.

I counted: 9 French Horns, 5 Flutes, 5 Bassoons, and 2 bass clarinets and 2 sets of timpani. I guess this is not played by Orchestras traveling ’on the road’.

Cheers

Jazz connection? Check the guy on washboard. Straight outta Nawlins. :)
complete Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, and MJQ collections, on RTR tape if you can find them, otherwise vinyls

Not that I recognize myself...
:--)

I do not know what frogman is talking about but I guess that you wrote something about not coming back. I was about to write the same but eventually did not publish it and Alex calmed me down. I actually was cool until I saw the reason of the removal. My usually lower blood pressure went quickly high. :-)

Still, I am not sure how to behave from now on, this was quite inconsiderate act from audiogon. Simple and kind warning should have been enough. We are not kids, ok, maybe Rok only, but the rest of us would have surely understood the message. :-)

Yes, Mary_Jo, that is what I was talking about; a post that was also deleted. Personally, I consider the posts deleted over the years ample warning. As I recently told my upset kid (son), sometimes it’s best to kill them (Agon) with kindness instead of indignation. Works both ways; and it did work.  I’m glad our happy little family is back.

Btw, I do like “fro”. Please don’t shoot the messenger 😊

I so like this song fro, thank you. :--)

You teach your son well. I do agree with you but sometimes my bad temper overpowers me, although I've been known as diplomatic type. It should be other way around, hasty when young, reasonable and more calm when older. I mixed up something.
