Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

Steve Grossman!! Maybe the greatest of the post-Coltrane tenor players. Great player. https://youtu.be/N0T0mM_A7O4 https://youtu.be/fH4uWIVPOj0 https://youtu.be/0EwdZfd0RFA |

Outstanding, indeed. Lovely gentle groove. Beautiful tenor. Perfect example of why Michael Brecker was the Coltrane of his generation. Along somewhat similar lines: https://youtu.be/gvGoetSAdvM With her own NYC based band. Outstanding writing and soloing! https://youtu.be/NIrGXnXPNH0 https://youtu.be/PJRD8waQR2Q |

Michel Legrand, "Legrand Jazz." On Impex vinyl, also available on SACD. "Legrand Piano" is also nice, as is his date with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne. He's a recent discovery by me, and I'm grateful someone recommended him. The soundtrack by Miles Davis for the film "Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud." A great story about how it was made, and it's available on a well-made 10" vinyl disc. Great with a bourbon; moody, atmospheric, whatever all that means. Maybe it was the bourbon. But, seriously, anything by Miles during this period |
Got up this AM and after my Bach cantata had to listen to acman3’sgreat WDR post, only a few days old to boot . Noticed this time their lady saxophone star , Karolina Strasssmayer, had not only played that but also flute and clarinet as well in those few minutes. I imagine she plays guitar and piano as well .Actually I know she plays piano ! Here is Randy Becker with the German National Youth Jazz Band .Very good all around and a saxophone solo that will knock your face mask off ! https://youtu.be/DE_uZ26Ku6I?t=4 German National means the State pays all the bills . |
I think I'll wait for Saturday's programme. And I think, that if I sprinkled the Jazz Queen of Croatia with Holy Water, she would Sizzle. Just for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRdszR6rCLA Cheers |

A heart full of love in Gospel music between Father and Daughter . https://youtu.be/LRsgqFu5c1o?list=PL7avj_hwRL0UEL4Yvmx-PzWX7HjCfUF41&t=4 Being a slow learner it’s taken me over 80 years to come to the conclusion the only real Christians left in our society are poor Latino mothers and Black Church Ladies . To include me . |
And I think, that if I sprinkled the Jazz Queen of Croatia with Holy Water, she would Sizzle. :-)))) something like that I ain't believer but I am not uninformed, I lived once in Catholic faith but stopped being a believer about 15 years ago. I am telling this just to tell you that I understand the song that you posted for me. That was nice of you, thank you. ;--) |
Somewhat of a rarity, a French orchestra. My only CD by a French Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris - Barenboim playing Ravel, I ruined by dropping it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV0KkYUa6iA Cheers |
In a 'lighter' note, two 'sevdah' songs. If I dont ask too much, I would be very curious to hear what kind of emotion or thoughts this evokes,if any, with you guys... https://youtu.be/WTXeRRVcs7M https://youtu.be/sHVsdYJTyAw By the way, if someone is interested what kind of music is it, there is a great explanation in english, below in the comments , half way on that page under the first song |
"Jazz Track" was an album that came out in 59 with "Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud." on one side and "Green Dolphin Street" plus 2 other cuts on the other side. I liked Green Dolphin Street a lot, but not much else. Not until I saw the movie did I realize how boss "Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud." was; it fit the story line of that movie so perfectly. That also revealed what an extraordinary talent Miles was. If I had seen the movie in 59, I would have liked it then. I bought "Legrand Jazz" about the time it came out. |
Well, due to my ignorance I never would have thought that I would see the words Croatia and tango in the same sentence. A little research revealed that tango is quite popular in Croatia with several annual tango festivals it seems. That was my first reaction when I listened to “Moj Dilbere”. A slow tango?! Ancient song set to a tango beat. I agree with Rok, very beautiful. **** I would be very curious to hear what kind of emotion or thoughts this evokes,if any, with you **** Bitter sweet; with a bit of melancholy. Music in an appropriately minor key. The (imaginary) memory of that last dance with the beautiful Croatian woman I met during that summer stay in Croatia. A wonderful romance that had to end; but the memory will last. |
I like almost everything that you post kid, but I am not thrilled with Admira. Something is missing. I need more of what she is offering. But maybe I can't recognize the good stuff. alex, from a quick listen (not all the way through) I liked it, the Middle Eastern flavor is interesting. But then I often enjoy something out of the ordinary of my normal listening. o10, I read that Miles recorded on the spot while watching the film on a monitor, all extemporaneous. If true, more testimony to his genius. |
Pryso, I'm not just from Miles hometown, I'm from Miles neighborhood. The reason I didn't know Miles is because I was only 3 years old when he left town. I never knew how much me and Miles had in common until after he was dead and I read his autobiography. I knew many of the people he mentioned in his book. I used to buy kites, toys and candy at the drugstore below his fathers dental office. I can still remember the Bar B Q, and those fish sandwiches he spoke of; never had anything better before or since, those sandwiches are legendary. In regard to his music, I liked Clifford Brown and Dizzy better in the 50's when I started listening to jazz. The strangest detail I noted about Miles music at that time was that all of the Miles fans I knew smoked pot, but that was cool at the time. Now that I've listened to all his music through it's many incarnations, I realize what a genus he was; any music I didn't like was because it needed a second listen in a different light. |
alexatpos, I thought your post was excellent . Always good to be exposed in serious music to what you don’t know in other serious music . rok and others have the elements down. My feelings are real sadness is the start of the path toward wisdom , which is frowned upon in American music in general . To be expected as it is taboo in our culture in general . P.S . Tango is the National Dance in Finland . |
One of the things I like best about Jazz is the the ability to improvise can show depths to music that are not apparent when played in the genre for which it was originally written , This fine jazz pianist shows that in about the last genre you would expect ..He plays one piece I always thought would musically shine in a slower tempo that still respects it's original sound .At least to a music lover . https://youtu.be/Gr9QH9SnRbw?t=3 |
Today's Listen: Jon Faddis -- LEGACY Notes by Dizzy Gillespie. Faddis plays tribute to some of the all time great trumpet players. This is jazz at it's very deepest level; this is music that expresses love and longing beyond comprehension; this is love to kill for, this is love to die for; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekmXq1nyB08 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OKQdp6iGUk |
I am a jazz Thoroughbred, you keep your stinkin words out of my music; case in point "Moanin"; no words can do justice to being completely overwhelmed by bad luck and bad birth; born under a bad sign, and can't do nothing about it, but "Moan". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNjRQo-zpKA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKOoxgI_xfQ |
"Along Came Betty"; she was beautiful, flirtatious with a jazzy walk, and as much as I liked the sight of her coming towards me, the sway of her hips walking away was a gas. There was only one "Betty", and every man in town knew who she was. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=along+came+betty |
This song tells a short story in just 3 minutes; there's that smokey haunting flute in the background that spells instant magnetic attraction and seduction. "Your eyes smile that strange invitation" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyp1yvSBq5I |
