Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

o10, I heard this on the car radio earlier today and thought of you. It's a fun compilation. So for you, and any other Maynard fans - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuAlK_E6pC4 |

The truth of the matter Pryso, is the fact that I'm just getting seriously interested in Maynard Fersuson as a musician. I saw him on TV clowning around so much, I thought he was just a showman, but now that I know better I'll be doing some serious listening and collecting. BTW, that's some boss Maynard Ferguson which I will add to my collection. It's funny that you should think about me, when I was thinking about you and Lee Konitz; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPO6Zq_jg1g&list=RDJPO6Zq_jg1g&start_radio=1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IoLvsQ_NhM&list=RDJPO6Zq_jg1g&index=4 That West Coast vibe was quite a contrast to my normal diet of East Coast jazz. People forget how different the Wast Coast was from the Midwest or East Coast at that time; there was a whole different lifestyle, and the music reflected that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNyt3_rZx5w&list=RDJPO6Zq_jg1g&index=6 Oddly enough, that tune has a West Coast feel to it, kind of laid back and beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsTfHhdF0t0 Either I'm listening better or I'm hearing better; no matter which, the music is sounding better; that's partly because of the "grid"; this "lockdown" has produced a quiet electrical grid. Most people don't realize that ARC and other expensive gear cost so much because of the power supply that tames kinky AC, but now that we have smooth AC, cheaper gear sounds much better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acbB2WH7ahw I think you're also into NOS tubes; I bought some brand new 6922 Telefunkens that sounded real good but didn't last, so now I have to go back to the expensive NOS that last forever; there ain't no free lunch in high end audio, but it's worth it. These are just the best times for serious listening; I'm listening to tape recorded with the Telefunkens in the Phono-Pre, and records like "Pithecanthropus Erectus" sound like new music, even though I first bought it in 61 or 62; so you no how many times I've heard it, but it sounds brand new today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB6GkA54n_Q Stay cool and enjoy the music. |
For me, this is classic West Coast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aTsO5IpMUg And recorded in a San Diego high school long before I moved there - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02MLv1i88_8 |
When I was young, I lusted for life on the West Coast; the ocean, beautiful sunsets, and loads of beautiful girls, what was there not to like. Gerry Mulligan is my favorite West Coast musician, his work on the movie soundtrack "I Want To Live" is unforgettable, it's so emotional. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRSCcC5LtwA I like this too; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syIgRlaUeow |
No wonder that "California Concerts" cooks like it does; Personnel: Zoot Sims (tenor sax), Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax), Bob Brookmeyer (piano), Red Mitchell (bass), Larry Bunker (drums) Bob Brookmeyer on piano; that's unusual; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTXPWizKSO4 |
This legend who wrote the words and some of the music for MANY of the "standards " also had a good voice and left a record of how we should act in present day . https://youtu.be/f3jdbFOidds?t=3 Not that I will . |
Has any one here heard the Johnny Mercer/Henry Mancini "demo" of Moon River? I don't suppose it is jazz per se but it is just Mercer singing and Mancini on the piano. I think it is the best version ever done. https://youtu.be/MKnZ174_kWk |
Blanchard, Harrison https://youtu.be/xkN1XXfaCxE Dizzy https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TVVc-41D5GQ Blanchard https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S_5u4x_xU2c Blanchard again https://youtu.be/22hnDbNKMq0 Yep, Dizzy https://youtu.be/A5tRGMHfKrE |
n80,Pure class !A guy who wrote the lyrics for so many jazz standards that probably would not be "standards’ without them is jazz . A true American treasure . One of his songs played and sung by a leading jazz diva and pianist . https://youtu.be/TdQj_oqVK7A?t=9 Very few jazz artists have not played it . |
Hah! Just yesterday morning I was awakened at around 5:00 AM by one of the most amazing sounds one will ever hear, the sound of one hundred frogs in the throes of ecstacy during their annual mating ritual in my upstate NY pond. Talk about "noise makers"! Nature’s noise makers, so all is forgiven. The poor little bast@rds must be confused as hell since their mating orgy was followed by six inches of snow! In late April! Normal weather cycles have been very erratic this year and not only do I have confused frogs, but a very disappointed wife since her precious daffodils may not survive the unexpected snow. Still, beautiful as heck up here. With all that is going on and in NYC in particular, all live performance coming to a screeching halt, schools closed and my wife getting the go-ahead to work from home we decided to "get the hell out of Dodge" and hunker down at our place up state. Internet service has always been dodgy up here and due to the "non-essential" work stoppage mandates our scheduled FIOS installation was cancelled. After a lot of prodding I managed to convince the local provider to let me do the indoor connections myself since they will not enter homes, so we are finally up and running. The previously very limited bandwidth has been reserved for mostly my wife’s work and son’s remote schooling. I must say that it has been refreshing staying off the internet. My time has been spent practicing, cooking, riding my tractor and digging in the dirt. Speaking of (band)width.....all that cooking!! ☺️ Thanks for reaching out guys....and babe. Hope everyone is well during this crazy time. Thanks for the music; I’ll be returning the favor shortly. Speaking of babes. Rok, that is Camille Thurman. Her stint with Wynton’s band as the first full-time female member was the talk of the town. Not sure it is permanent. Nice player. Not sure she is on the level of the rest of the band (yet?). I like her singing best. https://youtu.be/4QZ7xb5_e6k Think she likes Ella? https://youtu.be/jC4Ecn7eDuU Best to all. |
frogperson. You next move is to hit Delhi or what ever town is nearest and buy all the veggy seeds you can and plant them .Also 22 . rifle and lots of ammo for rabbits and such .A 243 rifle for deer won’t be a bad move either.USA is doing worse than anyone , I wonder why ? Native Americans have been telling us for 300 years that everything is connected to everything else. But we knew better. Mother nature bats last . |
Schubert, everything is connected indeed! I know Delhi well; less than twenty minutes drive from where I am on top of Palmer Hill in Andes. Nice little town, Delhi. Interesting you should mention hunting. Been talking about it with my son. Turkey season starts May 1. Deer will have to wait till the Fall. Never hunted deer, but working on getting up the nerve to do so. Still have memories of those two big beautiful eyes looking at me as, after one hour, I managed to pull in that seven foot swordfish when fishing off the bay in Zihuatanejo. I felt awful....for a little while. Delicious! |
No nerve required . Do what Native Americans did/do when you kill the game, for eating to stay alive not for "sport", thank the animal and the creator for keeping you and your family alive. It could come to that . A shotgun is a good self - defense weapon as well .So is a 22 . rifle for that matter.Gun Nuts say it isn’t but nobody wants to stand in front of one , I wouldn’t wait to buy either . 243 Winchester is the best caliber for deer , esp. if you’re new to hunting, gets the job done without much kick. I killed my first deer with a 30-30lever action rifle at age 12 . I felt remorse as well , any good hunter does . Yes Delhi is a nice town , a lot of folks would do better at the good 2 year rprograms at SUNY Delhi , which is a jewel, than running up debt at University . For all , when frog says it’s beautiful in upstate NY he’s not kidding .I’ve been all over the world and it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen . Period . https://youtu.be/iuJ9BODXQCo?t=3 And the Adirondack Mountains to the North are more beautiful than that! And the Finger Lakes to the west are the most beautiful lake district on this planet . |
The Frogman: Camille Thurman, Very good. They are on the right track and playing the right kind of music. Wynton is a good judge of talent. Doesn't the Bible say something about women in Jazz doing anything other than singing and piano?? She may force a change to the Scriptures. Glad you and yours are safe. Cheers |
Good to see you fro, I see that you were having a good time. :-) Somehow I can't imagine you with a gun or on a vehicle constructed to deliver a high tractive effort at slow speeds. :-) Cooking is very serious art form, you might consider sharing a recipe or two. This forum has to move to more advanced level. |
Cooking is more advanced than Jazz? Different cooking! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap4ZgpdO08Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN8am-4Bkck |

Love my tractor, mary_jo; and I’m the cook in the family. You’re right. Actually, there are many parallels between playing music and cooking. Haven’t tried frog legs ‘though.....can’t do it 😊 https://youtu.be/hkyJQcmVtZQ https://youtu.be/rTEb5cKQOg0 https://youtu.be/ovaY1KlQRi4 |
You cant mention West Coast Jazz without considering "The Crusaders" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crusaders_(Houston_group) |
...you can always count on Count Basie. Thanks fro. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eyIVFPxzO5g https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DLNjJytddVU "All I wanted was to be big, to be in show business and to travel ... and that's what I've been doing all my life."C.Basie |

Speaking of Basie, today is the great arranger/orchestrator Billy Byers’ birthday. Take a big band that swings like no other, give them Billy Byers arrangements and you get something special. A favorite Basie record; composed and arranged by Billy Byers: https://youtu.be/FpZK7XwDU4s https://youtu.be/KJ90msN5qe8 https://youtu.be/pJSlRYZVYAA While I’ve never been a huge Sinatra fan (give me Bennett any day), another favorite Basie record is "Frankly Basie", Basie plays the hits of Frank Sinatra; arranged by Billy Byers. For those who care, great Verve sound: https://youtu.be/JGNHg_viXJU https://youtu.be/ik1ThmDfpCo One more great Byers chart: https://youtu.be/sPVH7JK8aMA |
People are mad, absolutely mad. You have probably heard of 5G network being the one to blame for the spread of virus (among other things). https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/technology/2020/apr/03/broadband-engineers-threaten... https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/apr/06/at-least-20-uk-phone-masts-vandalised-over-false-... 5G operates (spectrum from 700 MHz and 3,5 GHz and 26 GHz - EUnion) within the frequencies of the visible light which we are all exposed to on daily basis (first picture on this web page) so if the visible light does not kill us nor 5G will: https://eimai.org/youth-shift-the-blog/2018/11/8/lights-frolics-and-the-skys-colors Also, even the sparrows know what is going on behind the scene of any confrontation. Fight for profit of course. Mostly. Forget the stories about the wars that started because of the beautiful women. It’s about the money. Has been and always will be. So if you know who invented the 5G (ask Gogo if you don’t know) and if you can guess who is interested to take it away (not hard to guess) you will know why all this fuss is designed for. Happy Labor day to all. I hope we will soon start working. In 5G turbo mode. |
