Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

The Three Sounds  --  HERE WE COME
Gene Harris(p), Andrew Simpkins (b), Bill Dowdy(d)

No notes, part of "Eight Classic Albums" 4 CD set.  Apparently all you need is a rhythm section.   Recorded 1960.

The Three Sounds  --  Introducing The Three Sounds    vol one

Also from the "Eight Classic Albums" CD set.  Recorded 1958.   I purchased this from Amazon back in 2013, new, for $10.99.   Today's new price on Amazon is $66.49!!  What a difference a few years make.

Some of the best tunes on this CD appear on you tube under the album cover of a 'KISS' album for some reason.  Couldn't bring myself to post that.

Today's Listen:

Kenny Burrell  --  FOR CHARLIE AND BENNY

Notes:  Christian was the first guitarist to play anything but rhythm.  He made his entry into the Jazz world via a small Benny Goodman combo, and later played in bands led by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie.

Tracks 1-8 were originally issued as "A Generation Ago Today" which has the silliest Jazz art cover in history.

All tunes played by the Goodman band and most originally featured Charlie Christian.

Players always take a big chance by having Phil Woods on their album.  He has been known to steal the show.

A recent discussion on Vinyl Asylum brought out a few fans of Anita O'Day, including YT.  While searching for a new post of her classic Newport Jazz Festival performance (original I had was deleted) I discovered this "All The Best" album.  So I offer that here for fans among you all -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKg9dHt-kgA
Today's Listen:

Jon Hendricks  --  A GOOD GIT-TOGETHER
with Julian and Nate Adderley and Wes Montgomery and his brothers.

Not my favorite Hendricks album, but he has some big-time guys backing him.

That's awesome music Rok. I know now what I will listen this evening. Thank you.
Awesome...a w e s o m e. Need something like this that can last  much longer...so that I do not have to change the songs.

I want English breakfast at 7 o' clock.

Fried eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried bread and tea and hot, buttered toast. And something nice to tell me. And a kiss.

Mary Jo,

Toot Suite:
It seems as if I failed to post some of the best music on "Jazz Party". Thanks for correcting that oversight.

The final section of "Toot Suite"(15:14) is called ’Ready, Go!’ On this track Paul Gonsalves comes close to having another "At Newport" moment.

"Sophisticated lady" was awesome. The Duke had the best Sax players ever!

Thanks.

Today’s Listen:

Benny Carter -- SONGBOOK
All song written by Benny Carter, of course. He plays Alto and trumpet. Peggy Lee was pass her prime(76), but, I loved her performance. All tracks are great.

Great booklet with recording history and lyrics of each song, and a small photo of the singer involved.
Great cover photo. I’m always impressed when they write on the sheet music.

Music has healing power. I really needed it. That Foreigner's was great. I used to listen it a lot, long time ago.

I doubt anyone has done as suave a rendition of this great standard .
The fact that is done in the language it was written in plays a significant part .

Not to mention it is the worlds most beautiful tongue .

mary jo. Time and time again you show us men what we are without women in every situation . Fools !

I believe it is no accident that women lead the lands that do best .( except England )
ESTUPENDO!!!

I have the Duke with Mahalia Jackson, but after checking on Amazon, it seems as if the Duke had an entirely different side that was unknown to me.   This was not a one-off sacred performance, he did it many times.   How did it escape me?

The quality of the performances were outstanding.  Dr. Bunny Briggs!!   Wow.   You can tell when the real 'Geniuses' are involved.

Thanks

Cheers
That's great music fro. I think I have heard Come Sunday - Mahalia Jackson, first time when you posted it here. I find it very special. The tune, the song, the voice.

I am trying to see the meaning of my pre-last post. Can’t find it. Trying again. Nope. Still nothing.

One of my first "finding love for jazz" tune. Art Pepper, The Prisoner.

It makes me think that one is always a prisoner of something. Such kind of captivity lasts forever. Too long to be recognized. Dug to deep to be digged out.

George Benson  --  TENDERLY

You can never be sure what you'll get with Benson.  Hard to put him in a box, but since McCoy Tyner and  Ron Carter are onboard,  this should at least be Jazz.

Glad you enjoyed Duke’s sacred concert music.  He wrote three Sacred Concerts toward the end of his career.  The music is seldom performed due to the number of performers required.  He considered the music for these “the most important music I ever composed”.  A side of Duke that is not heard often enough.

That Benson record has been one of my “guilty pleasure” records since I bought the lp years ago.  An example of when very slick and somewhat heavy handed production values actually work well musically...up to a point.  And for audiophile kicks, the sound is great.  All star producers and technical folk as well as players.

From the same time period and even more to the pop side things:

George Benson -- "New Day":

According to the commentators, written by Womack and Womack.  It definitely has that Womack vibe.  They were on my Sony Walkman playlist whenever I went jogging in Nuremberg, Germany.

Art Pepper -- "Thank You Blues"

Indeed!!   Great tune.   When will they learn that you can't go wrong with the Blues.  All Jazz sends it's thanks.

Today's Listen:

Duke Ellington  --  MASTERPIECES BY ELLINGTON

Notes / Booklet:
Very interesting accounts of the origin of each tune.   For example, Duke said he wrote "Mood Indigo" in 15 minutes while waiting for his mom to finish cooking dinner.  Barney Bigard said, in 1976, that he wrote the major portions of the tune.  He was paid $28.   Others made similar claims concerning "Sophisticated Lady".  The payments then were $15.
Sometimes the world of Jazz is not that much different from the world of Blues.
