o10, with pianists better known as vocalists I thought you might be about to post Nat King Cole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrdJS4ZxRbA Maybe I'm unusual but I think of Nina as both, not just a singer. I don't recall hearing her singing without accompanying herself on piano in fact. |
This man has a severe case of the blues. He has a better band than Elmore James, but the feeling / story is the same. Them two-timing women https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0euYKIMfV4I Cheers |

You have a quotation mark right above this box where you write your words in... https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-hms-vf-hr&ei=8y1lXtWrB-SkrgSc5oDIAw&q=quotat...: So you first write a line like I am writing this one. Then you select what you have written. Keep the line selected and hit the quotation mark. |
Pryso, Eunice Waymon was a concert pianist who became a vocalist by accident. To make a living, Eunice Waymon started playing piano at a nightclub in Atlantic City. She changed her name to "Nina Simone" to disguise herself from family members, having chosen to play "the devil's music" or so-called "cocktail piano". She was told in the nightclub that she would have to sing to her own accompaniment. I might be the only person who enjoys her piano to the point where I focus on that as much as her vocals. |
Today’s Listen: Some Significant Recordings. (to me) There aren’t that many: At my sister’s house in Maryland. A family friend, Naval Officer, brought it over to play. Pioneer Receiver and Speakers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pejJxEs_v-s First heard in PX in Seoul, Korea. Checked all PXs. Finally took the one they were playing, out of the player, at the Camp Casey PX. Got me through Korea, the second time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwbSKsZ_ODM These two Brubeck tunes played by guys from Memphis ALL NIGHT. My first night away at college. Great tunes, but. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryA6eHZNnXY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKNZqM0d-xo My last LP purchase. Sound warehouse El Paso, Texas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwfjdF6zDz8 My first CD purchase. PX, Nurnberg, Germany. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xDv_37vwZ0 The only recording I have ever heard that I thought was a live band. From a distance, outside in a parking lot. Nurnburg, Germany. Sony speakers, Phase Linear 700 series amps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pulI3in1UgI Got me through Korea, the first time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f47TZePukuQ Huntsville, Alabama. Nuff said. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qusTbkgRKtQ Cheers |
In this months issue of "Stereophile"; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFDFwgo0__Q&list=PL0q2VleZJVEmivAkLxBNwNAb0IfDU6vE7 I haven't listened to it yet; we can review it together and make a comment after. |
This by Charles Lloyd "8 Kindred Spirits" also appears in this months magazine; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqqnOjzv-zA |
Last but not least, (actually it may or may not be least, I never heard of the guy, "Harish Raghavan"; "Calls For Action";) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyrQZZg2S94 This concludes jazz in Stereophile. |
Phineas Newborn Jr. : I have several of his CDs. Good player, But, he spent too much time in the upper range. The recording had little dynamic range. Some of the tunes contained too many flourishes. Almost as bad as Tatum. If there are no horns, the piano player cannot just tickle the high notes. There must be more power!!! Think Oscar and Gene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlUUbylwdnc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfNIVdnz1FQ But, a good album, just needed more weight from the piano. Cheers |
The current state of Jazz reminds me of the current state of politics in the West. Jazz used to be for working class folks in night clubs. Now, if for 'elites'. Left-wing and left leaning political parties used to be for working class people. Wages, conditions, unions etc.... Now there are for the elites in the universities and professional 'Political activists'. Most of whom have never had a job in their lives. Art imitating life?? Cheers |
Thank you. This is quite far from jazz, great melody, anyway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dpo3RwiJO9c |
Rok, I thank you for your review of Stereophile's recommended music. Your assessment of Phineas Newborn concurred with other experts. The fact that Charles Lloyd is still performing is the 8th wonder of the jazz world; I forgot what the other 7 were. (memory is not as good as it used to be) Gene Harris & Roger Kellaway - Senor Blues is absolutely fantastic; I don't know why I don't have it; that will get corrected. Keep the music coming. |
rockadanny, we welcome new posters and their contributions. I am certain that the last thing that anyone here needs is to be spoken for and this comment is not intended that way. Having said that, you are making a mistake with your assumption and reaction. First, consider that this thread has been active for seven years! All the regular contributors’ posting styles are well known and, believe it or not, humor is a big and welcomed aspect of many of the posts. Had you been paying attention you would have noticed that Dolphy’s virtues as a player was being well acknowledged around the time of your post and certainly going back years as well; and probably more so by the contributor you quote than anyone else. If one loves Dolphy, one loves the bass clarinet. Point is, don’t take it personally. It was a bit of humor and nothing more. So, please post some music and have a cookie. |
Today's Listen: Gene Harris Quartet -- IT'S THE REAL SOUL with special guest Frank Wess(flute & tenor sax) Notes with comments on the history of each tune, and a short piece on how Harris got started in the world of music. Recorded Live in Pittsburgh in 1995. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyNL4T7JBpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67Mtu_H0JMI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEdvLnyStpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_KDD8IUO8I If I have posted this before, well, it's like The Frogman says, "you can't get too much Gene Harris". Cheers |
I really enjoyed Maynard Ferguson; a musician who I have very fond memories of. On a weekend at my favorite watering hole, before Maynard got fat, and was still at the top of his game, I overheard this group of people who had put two tables together and were partying. I was seated at the bar not far away, sipping on a scotch, and observing the revelers. They were having a grand time, and it was not until I overheard one of them challenge somebody in the group that; "I bet you can’t do it", that the group really got my attention. The challenge seemed to be aimed at the someone who was the most tipsy in the group. That’s when somebody handed him a trumpet, and he got up and imitated Maynard Ferguson’s famous high note. The guy really muffed it, and they all had a big laugh, but since he was Maynard Ferguson, it didn’t matter. That was the only time I ever saw a celebrity out just having a good time with his friends. |
