I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

schubertHere are 2 cuts from G Rubalcaba trio cd's I own and recommend. Don't know if you already purchased them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb4FaQwyzxU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0y7JzGrMVA |
nsp, the Amazon guy struck again and I got my first Haden-Rubalcaba CD today . "Tokyo Adagio" . He and Haden don’t play like one , they are one . The love between them is palpable , perhaps intensified by Haden being so sick . Most of the music is slow tempo, not that it matters with Gonzalo as he invented the continual variable transmission . Nothing there but the music floating in the air with reference to nothing but itself . No place, no time, no person . Absolute perfection .If I was allowed one question to Rubalcaba it would be " Are you a student of Zen " ? Yes or no I would have my answer to all my other questions . On a one to ten scale this CD is 117 aka trip to Infinity . |
A voice with obvious “imperfections”; but, for me there is something special and very honest about the way that Abbey Lincoln sang. There is a sense that it is coming from a place very deep inside. Amazing artist. Apropos recent focus on a great songwriter (Hoagy Charmichael), Kurt Weill’s “Lonely House”. Kills me every time: https://youtu.be/JXtY_APMKWA |
https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr=yhs-sz-001&hsimp=yhs-001&hspart=sz&p=kurt+w... No imperfections here . At least none I could hear . |
Re Schubert’s mentions of music conservatories and saxophone ensembles. This is the level at which young musicians in schools and conservatories are playing today. Same thing on the Jazz side of things. Pretty astounding! https://youtu.be/XYfK4aKSbd4 |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8lXrMVodW0 Little short of astounding frogman ! Eastman acoustics are a help as well. Here is something on the jazz side, this little sweetly really got to me .Guessing she hasn’t the best instrument . How does a 13 yr old play stone cold bebop and maintain her tone on all those Parker triplets without blinking a eye ? If she was my grand daughter I’d be bursting buttons off suits hanging in my closet . |
schubertNot true. I posted Scott Hamilton late last year and we discussed him. I rediscovered his music last year after not listening to him for quite some time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWRBucuJ0gk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7HPVurB2xQ |
Not that they mean much, but sometimes the Grammys get it right. Congrats to Wayne Shorter, & bandmates Brian Blade, John Pattitucci, and Danilo Perez for the Jazz win! And a special shout-out to a favorite; Dafnis Prieto, and his Big Band, for the win in Latin Jazz! Prieto's having a banner year! https://youtu.be/rWm1s3ze8d4 |
Here's one of Roberto; alongside his equally-legendary cousin Luisito (a monsta playa, recently toured with Corea but's primarily known for his work with the Spanish Harlem Orchestra). Incredible percussionists! https://youtu.be/Sm0FxCxheoA |
chazro, I have listened to Shorter's new recording but do not own it. The music is terrific but the 50 dollar plus price tag for 3 CD's is ridiculous. I don't see the relevance of a graphic novel and colorful presentation to justify the price. If it was a limited edition, with just 2500 in this format available I could relate. The right thing to do would have been to release it as a limited deluxe set of 2500 - 5000 copies and a mass produced 3 disc music only set for half the price. I am going to wait a year and see if they re-release it in a budget format. The mp3 is 15 bucks but the quality of sound would not be up to my standards. |
Jeremy Pelt new release 22 February pre-ordered https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M7Q4MTB/?coliid=I38ENCJIM3M6EP&colid=2MJEFFF7AFXNS&psc=0&re... Pelt, IMHO, is one of the best 21st century jazz musicians out there and has been relentlessly touring the world while releasing studio albums on a yearly basis over a 10 year span now with some live releases mixed in. Great straight ahead old school jazz rooted in traditional blues/hard bop but he does not limit himself and also composes and plays an equal amount of explorative complex harmonics and melody's. His trumpet playing as well as his music compositions just keep getting better year after year. I met him at Dizzy's Coca Cola Club in NYC back in 2014 while he was guest trumpet on a Ravi Coltrane date. I have all his albums including the one titled "The Talented Mr. Pelt." I walked over to the band after the show and spoke with Ravi then turned toward Jeremy and said "ah the talented Mr. Pelt" to which he smiled and gave me a firm handshake. Look out, Windy City ! That 3 million in clip is 4 million .And at least a dozen young jazz groups that could play anywhere in the world have been added in 6 years . |
Aldo its here stated that album is called 'Angel Eyes' I have it as 'Bags Groove' from Black Lion label, from 1961. Everything else is the same, I guess. Duke Pearson trio, really like this one, for quiet nights. We have mentioned him many times, but still... https://youtu.be/ECNG2mryCRM https://youtu.be/jOx6uwyXWIY https://youtu.be/XgnrRRwbOvk https://youtu.be/YMR-PY3MOLo |
alex, I really dig the 1st and 4th selections of Duke Pearson. 3 and 4 said video not available. btw, I listened to the Joe Pass LP at a friends place. really enjoyed it. I rarely go to his place because he lives in NYC and I am 60 miles away in the suburbs. He has a Rega Planar 2 turntable with tube tube pre amp and amp. 2 channel set up with B & W speakers. |

Alex, I compliment you for submitting the exquisite LP "Angel Eyes". Currently I'm 100% into "new vinyl" so I have to take what little is available, but I'm searching for that one. It seems we're "simpatico" when it comes to the 50's and 60's jazz; I'll have to go back through your posts and see what's available on LP. Keep up the good work. |

Pjw, glad you liked the album(s) Orpheus, good to see you back. Hope you are doing fine. Here is another album that you might like. Roland Hanna 'Duke Ellington piano solos' https://youtu.be/N5HGVi-pcRE https://youtu.be/Kl9TcRb-y00 |
pjw I enjoyed the Pelt clips. I bought "Soul" recently and really like it, especially his pianist D Grissett. From your clip it seems like this is his working band. I plan to buy some other Pelt discs eventually. Also like his playing on Ralph Peterson's "Art of War": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h325CHxXMwQ |
Schubert Hope you are enjoying your new G Rubalcaba purchases. I came across this duo cd in my collection that he did with J Lovano, It's a mixture of standards and originals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSBtr3gOfHQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L727skYpDeE |
I too enjoyed the Pelt clips; a lot. Thanks, pjw! Interesting player; something very direct and “to the point” about his playing. I did have a little trouble with his choice of synth patch for his horn. On “Blues” (can’t get more direct than that for a tune title), the synth trumpet sound didn’t quite work for me within the overall vibe setup by the rhythm section and that killing guitar solo. Some great plunger mute work might have been just the ticket. Just my personal taste and it really was a great trumpet solo. nsp, thanks for the Rubalcaba/Lovano clips. I did not know they had recorded together; interesting and unexpected pairing. Also unexpected is the horn that Lovano plays on “Mr. Hyde”. “Return Of Our OP” prize to whoever can identify the instrument 😀. Welcome back, O-10. https://youtu.be/2ErlcwMVGdw |
nsp My "hard bop" link "What's Wrong Is Right" is on your Soul LP. I know you live on Long Island and wanted you to know that the great James Carter is playing at Birdland NYC in April and wouldn't want you to miss it. http://jamescarterlive.com/performances Its his organ trio band which always is a great show! Gerard Gibbs on the Hammond B-3 http://hammondorganco.com/artists/organ-and-leslie-artists/gerard-gibbs/ Leonard King on the drums http://leonardkingdrums.com/ Here is a complete live performance in France I think you will like it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI6KEeiMakw |
Hello Orpheus I hope your doing well. Good to see you posting here. I thought you might enjoy the following clips. Schubert those 2 Illinois Jacquet clips are great The first one had me mesmerized and the second one had me tapping my feet and snapping my fingers! The second link gives credence Ellington's "it don't mean a thing if aint got that swing" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxfMRhyzu3g |
