Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Rok, I smell a "conspiracy" in regard to that harassment after she married a young husband.
Once "they" found something that could stick "they" wouldn't let up.

Who cares about what an entertainer does as long as they entertain? Nobody but "them".

Will get back to you with more.

Enjoy the music.
*****  I smell a "conspiracy" in regard to that harassment after she married a young husband.*****

Chill O-10, Chill.   No conspiracy, just different societal standards.   Contrast that time period to now, when a Man can marry his own daughter and it's considered OK.

Ain't progress grand?

Cheers
****Who cares about what an entertainer does as long as they entertain?****

Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, (the list goes on).......???????
Rok, this is a musical forum and I thoroughly appreciated your contribution of Valaida Snow., when I mentioned "conspiracy", I was thinking of entertainers other than Ms. Snow who were affected because they didn't follow the script.

Enjoy the music.
***** I was thinking of entertainers other than Ms. Snow who were affected because they didn't follow the script.*****

I remember when I was a child,  hearing my Mom and her sisters talk about Cab Calloway getting into trouble, during their young years, for playing the National Anthem in a jazzy style.  Caused a National uproar.

Of course today, the Anthem is disrespected by ill-educated clowns who get millions for playing a child's game.  They say, "we be oppressed".  And of course everyone 'respects' their actions.

Things ain't what they used to be.  This is the result of decades of left- wing influence in the American education system.

Cheers

Frogman, pardon me for commenting non jazz subjects, but I do not believe that Cosby and Allen should be in the same sentence...
Again, reading Rok's last conclusion, I should probably restrain myself for saying this, but I find most disturbing thing ever (at least for me)  to listen, read anything in regards to the American politics...and their media coverage and their misinterpretations of every single information possible. That ocean of lies they feed their own people and the rest of the world is becoming quite unbearable. Of cours, this is nothing new. But in recent years the American media has been plagued with all sorts of problems including, sliding profits, scandals about manipulation, plagiarism, propaganda, lower audiences, “dumbing down”, and so on. In the same time they feed people with more and more lies and  fears . I wouldn’t care much about it; but unfortunately they kind of still dictating our future...
I would think that those things are only possible because of lack of general education...

***** Anybody see anything out of the ordinary?*****

Sax player, front row far left.  Sort of reminded me of Lester Young playing while asleep!   hahahahah   Is it a real person?

Cheers
****but I do not believe that Cosby and Allen should be in the same sentence****

Given the subject at hand, why?

Alex, that's about the most intelligent statement you've made. Day by day the music and this whole hobby is becoming more and more irrelevant; especially when I know why people don't have jobs and are suffering so much; there has been a transfer of the wealth in this country that most people don't understand; it's related to the price of food and gasoline among other things. But you can count on the media to get everything wrong; intentionally.

Fox TV seems to keep more people dumbed down than anything I know; nothing is more stupid than that left, right talk, and "race" is used to manipulate people into doing all sorts of stupid s--t.

in 1980, I sold real estate in the grandest subdivision I have ever seen that the "working man" could afford to live in. The space in all these uniquely designed homes was divided up in a way where just about anyone could get what they wanted.

Some had huge kitchens with a center island, like kitchens you see in rich LA homes. They all had 3 or 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a double car garage. They also had a family room for entertaining, and a small front room, that stayed spotless because it was never used. Although all these homes had the same total amount of space, it was divided up in many different ways, and they were all in the same price range. This subdivision had it's own security and a swimming pool.

At that time there were three Black families living in that subdivision, who all were professionals with degrees.

There was never any kind of "known" problem in that subdivision, but an "unknown" problem existed; one racist agent told his client not to sell to Blacks, and my Black client wanted to buy that house. They caused so many problems, that I finally persuaded my client to pick another, even better house in that same subdivision.

The Whites that lived there worked at the Aircraft factory, or at Ford Motors; this was the American Dream, and it was available for the working man. It was available because of the Unions that made sure the workers got their fair share of the profits.

While neither that subdivision or that community was racist; I have three points to make: 1. A working man could afford a grand style of living at that time.

2. Instead of enjoying his grand life, he resented a Black man living in the same life style.

3. He resented it so much that he voted against his own economic interest for the sake of some racial interest that won't buy a slice of bread.

By voting for people who consider working class people beneath them, and only consider the interests of the arostocracy, we have poverty for the working man, and riches more than the aristocracy can count.

Those people even turned the Democratic party around; have you ever heard of NAFTA.

If you notice Fox TV uses "race" to manipulate people; some people can be manipulated to hang themselves if they think it's the "Right" thing to do meaning the "conservative" thing to do; they do not have the ability to think for themselves; they talk in left, right code talk, meaning "Progressives" who ever they are, are the bad people; this is the same as when the "boogy man" communists were the enemy, or the union was the enemy, they're too dumb to realize that the union was "them" and it fought for their wages, and jobs and benefits. Now that there is no union, how do they like food stamps?

BTW, hit don't make no difference now. The Democratic president considers the Trans Pacific Partnership more important than poverty or unemployment.   Although this is a music forum and I thoroughly appreciated everyone's contributions, I can chew gum and walk at the same time.

I wish more people would look at what has happened to the middle working class in this country.
Joseph de Maistre: "Every country has the government it deserves

Pretty much sums it up.

That video of Paul Gonsalvez sleeping is legendary. Gonsalvez sadly had a substance abuse problem and surely that was the reason for the nodding off.

Duke's band sounds awesome; even while missing Tenor 1.

Rok, I'm so glad you didn't come up with any of the answers I expected you to come up with.

Now I can happily get back to the music.

This is the most unusual record in my collection

***** I'm so glad you didn't come up with any of the answers I expected you to come up with.*****

I did come up with those answers, I just didn't post them.   We all know the truth about everything,  some of us just can't face the truth.

Damn, I sound like Jack.

Btw, black folks are probably the most racist group in this country.   I mean this in the sense that, most of them see EVERYTHING through the prism of race.  It blinds them to so much.

Also, there are several instances of uneducated and poor working class people, rising to ultimate power in several countries.  Some examples:

Soviet Russia -- 20-30 million dead
Communist China --  untold millions dead
Nazi Germany -- responsible for approx 50 million dead
North Korea -- what can one say
Khmer Rouge in Cambodia -- they committed genocide against their own people.   Killed anyone that wore eyeglasses.  Thought that made them an intellectual.

Thank God for the Elites.

Cheers
Duke Ellington(Paul Gonsalves)-Crescendo+Diminuendo In Blue

Great, but nothing tops the live performance at New Port.

Rok, you're 100% correct, looking at everything through the prism of race is total stupidity.

If you look through the prism of economic class, you will see the light, and that's what Fox TV forbids. Then, if you're a working class stiff, you will see Fox TV is not your friend.

Oh.....why not?

As I get older and as I watch what is happening in the politics landscape at this very moment, what becomes more and more obvious is how easily many of us can turn a blind eye to dishonesty and corruption by "our side" as long as it serves to delegitimize "the other side".  The idea that communism can be seen as a false "boogieman" is a perfect example.  It was and is the worst boogieman of all.  If only for this reason, when one considers the two pathetic choices that are being offered the American people at this moment in political history  the best choice, as usual,  is that which will keep us as far away from that ideology as possible and not move us toward it.  The truth is that Fox News is no more biased toward "the right" than most others news outlets are biased toward "the left"; and probably a lot less.  As much as Rok and I have disagreed about many things, I find his recent comments to be spot on.
Diminishing middle class? Yes, since 1971, the middle class has lost 11%, per a PEW report.

7% moved into the upper class and 4% moved into the lower class.

The Fed has been pumping money into the economy, while interest rates are near 0%.  People who know how to make money are making a killing, as they hand out money, and the middle and lower class are handing all their disposable income to the upper class, instead of investing, and we wonder why there is income disparity. Very oversimplified, I know.

Frogman, the only place communism exists is in Cuba, and the poor people are doing better in Cuba than they are here. Communism is about as much a threat here as the boogieman.

We fought a war in Vietnam to stop communism, and we all Know how that Turned out. Rich people profit from wars while poor people die fighting them.

Acman, do poor people have disposable income? There is a thing called a 401K that includes money which goes to the stock market that working people pay.

Politicians work for rich people as a result of lobbying in both parties. If you notice, even in this hobby, it's no longer affordable; the gear we used to by, is now priced for the rich, because that class is growing, while whatever economic class we are in is shrinking.

There is "no one" representing working class people in this country.

Have a nice day.

****the only place communism exists is in Cuba, and the poor people are doing better in Cuba than they are here. ****

O-10, sorry, but you could not be more mistaken; I would have thought that you would be more aware of what is going on around the world in countries which either still adhere to a Communist ideology or still have leanings in that direction due to their past. Now, some will get hung up on the issue of "at what point does socialism become full-fledged Communism"; personally, I don’t believe that as concerns the move away from the philosophy that made this country (US) the most important force for good on the planet, that the distinction matters.

http://www.pri.org/stories/2013-12-10/can-you-name-five-remaining-communist-countries-world

You really should educate yourself about what is really going on in Cuba. As a Cuban emigre with immediate family still in Cuba I can comfortably say that your statement is dead wrong. Life for the poor in this country is infinitely better than that of the average Cuban. The corruption of that regime is mind boggling. If you would like to learn more and in more detail about what the returning tourists don’t get to see (not allowed) and what the romance of the beauty of the island hides, please contact me privately and I would be glad to offer some facts based on direct experience.

Some things are too important to not discuss, imo; especially at this point in time and even on a music thread. Although it would not surprise me if some of these posts mysteriously disappear.

If the renters I have had are any indication, I would say they almost always had better TV’s, phones, computers, clothes and cars than I did. All I owned was the houses they lived in, till I sold the houses.

The extreme poor, no,
Frogman, you surprised me in a way. So far, you have always tried to put things we discussed about (music) in a wider perspective, and now I find your statements to be very opposite. I consider you as a very educated person so I find your post very biased because of some personal motiv and not because you are not able to name things with their proper names.

But, let me make myself more clear, if somebody else read this.
You have always said that is important to put things into 'context'.
If you are writing only from a perspective of a cuban disident, I could perhaps understand, but still your post is far from truth. It has at least two incorrect generalisations.

Let me ask you hypothetical question, if you are by any chance refugee from Iraq, Syria or Lybia, would you perhaps think that all evil comes from 'western democracy' ?

Or what would you say about this, now very old quote, about 'the most important force for good, on the planet'...from S.D. Butler
' I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902–1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.'

What would you think how the perspective looks from non American point of view? And all that said is ancient history and childs play in comparation from events from ww1  (which by the way is caused by colonial and imperial aspirations of western powers)  ww2  and not the mention recent history  of 20th century and 'export of democracy'.

Bottom line, its all about the money and power.  Hypocricy is the same, no matter do you 'export' 'communism' or democracy'.

But, in the name of truth, all the things should be called by their true meaning. Communism is just a theory, that was never implemented, no matter how it was called by thugs who use it as a poor excuse to rule the people or states.
Same goes for 'western democracy'. If its forced, or used just as excuse for dirty deeds, than its not democracy but agression or tyrany.

Finally, the 'left' or 'right' certainly have different meaning in US than in Europe. But, the most advanced countrys  from old continent, the scandinavin ones, (most of the rest are having the similar policy) are for sure the ones with most developed 'social' states, which does not mean that their citizens are controled by the state, but just that they have very human attitude towards health care, education, employment, housing or about handling the unemployed or homeless people.
In reality often that means 'free' health care and college education, flexible job market and protection of rights of working people.
In fact, if someone would propose the same to the US citizens, no doubt it would be named as 'communist'.

The thing that bothers me is hypocracy, when somebody (individuals, corporations or states) takes the false pretenses and use mass media to spread lies and fears, naming its intentions as a 'good or righteous', when behind is only greed for power or money.

Alex, I am traveling today so will not be able to respond until tomorrow; but I will.

I hate to spoil everybody's fun, but there is as much insanity at the very highest levels of government as in the movies; phone tap, computer tap, and tap the tap; meaning lets get back to the music.

I know I started this conversation, and I also Know about the insanity that's not suppose to exist; it's just like in the movies, crazy.

Alex, I am well aware of the ideological differences between "socialism" and "communism"; I am also aware, as I know you are, that although the terms are mistakenly used interchangeably, there are similarities that go to what is, for me, the main issue relevant to what inspired this discussion in the first place.  My comments were made with the situation in Cuba as the backdrop, in reaction to the comments by O-10.  That may make me biased due to a "personal motiv", but my "bias" does not change the reality ("truth") of what the situation is in Cuba; and, there is a great deal of misinformation and inaccuracies presented about that situation.  Most people are shocked when I tell them about the incredible shortages of the most basic goods and medicines that all, except the elite, in Cuba face.  How a young attorney in Cuba earns the equivalent of $30 (yes, you read that correctly) a month, an experienced and established doctor (my brother) $300 a month.  How, only if someone in the family is ill, are you allowed a meager ration of meat or yogurt; unless, of course, you have funds sent to you from overseas; funds which the govenrment proceeds to take a percentage of.  How, if one applies to leave the country, you will be ostricized and even your employment is jeoperdized.  Oh, yes, medical "care" is free to all.  Problem is, many of the most common meds are not available. The situation in Cuba is a disaster and, incredibly, getting worse in spite of recent changes in relations with the US.  This, sadly supporting my contention that the best reason for "improving" relations between the two countries would be the elimination, once and for all, of the last excuse that the Cuban regime has had for why their system of government is a disaster.

I am not sure what "incorrect generalizations" in what I wrote you are referring to, or how it is "far from truth".  If you are referring to my comments about Cuba, I assure you that my comments are absolutely correct; "dissident perspective" and all.  As I said to O-10, if you would like more details about what life in Cuba is like for the average Cuban I would be glad to offer more information.  If, on the other hand, you are referring to my comments about the role of the U.S., that can certainly be debated.  However, if you think your own perspective is not biased I think you would be mistaken; all our perspectives are for a variety of reasons.  From my perspective, that the U.S. is, on balance, the greatest "force for good" is undeniable.  I would simply (?!) point to things like the question of what the world would be like had it not been for US involvement in WW2, largest humanitarian aid donor, most advances in research and innovation in medicine; the list goes on.  Problems? Mistakes?  Many.  However, the notion that that the export of Communism can be equated with the export of Democracy strikes me as highly cynical.  I would agree that the notion of "exporting" of ideology is highly questionable; however, as usual, and as complex and difficult as these topics are, we the "very educated" have a tendency to get mired in the theoretical details and overlook some of the most basic and mundane indications of a possible answer to our heady questions.  What country do more foreigners want to go to than any other?

Thanks for the thoughtful comments and challenge.

Alex, I'm savoring your contributions; they're so fresh and new to me. I've heard a lot about the musicians, like Earl Hines and Herb Pomeroy, but don't have them in my collection.

Body and Soul by John Lewis is really mellow; Jim Hall is one of my favorite guitarists.

Keep em coming.

Enjoy the music.

Orpheus, man would thought that you may even know the guy, Earl Fatha Hines, he's been in jazz forever. Here is a nice double album that I can recommend, recorded live in Village Vanguard, with Roy Eldridge and Coleman Hawkins.
Its called ' Grand Reunion' from 1965.

Alex, I didn't even know jazz existed before "Bird"; at least that's what my collection looks like. Now I'll have to correct that.

Evidently you didn't know about the back and forth banter me and Rok have had in regard to "Sweet Georgia Brown"; maybe he'll clue you in.

I liked his piano with P.G. better. It's a generational thing in regard to his overall concept of music; while I might like some things, his overall concept of music predates mine. I read where the pianist I like, thought very highly of Earl "fatha" Hines.

Enjoy the music.
Frogman, before all, please do not take any of my words ’ad hominem’.I had no doubt what so ever that you are very well aware of some of the facts I have said, or will say know, but you have chosen to believe in version that will keep you comfortable. That is your absoulte right and I respect that. However, I repeat myself, since you have had opposite mindset when you disscused music, somehow I expected (more) the same approach in other things (politics) .

There is a place and time for everything. Since this is american forum about music and I am from other continent, writing critic thoughts about politics is not the best way to make friends. So, I will try to make it short and only answer on some your thoughts. My first post was not comment about Cuba, aldo one could wonder how the decades of forced economic embargo had helped the unfortunate present state of things there.

However, you have chosen (imho) very limited perspective and even worse, it is very untrue. Does anybody really needs to explain that in present time. ’communisam’ is not the boogeyman any more? That statement is apsurd.
Trying to picture any country or any man (except those unfortunate one or two) as a ’close to that ideology’ is malicious and pure propaganda (aldo poor one)
That is a kind of statement that perhaps some tv house (fox?) may use, but that is excactly the thing that is wrong and what I described in my first post about media that I loath.
We should all try to rise above such way of ’disscusions’ and use arguments based on facts.

You find my comparation between ’export’ of ’democracy’ or ’communisam’ highly cynical. Even further, you insists that without a doubt, you are certain which is ’most important force for good on the planet’.
Such a claim is so highly inacurate ethicly, no matter that I agree with many things you have listed to support such a claim.
But, to use the term of ’Good’ and in same time close eyes on policy’s that have had commited such a long list of wrong doings on such scale by simply calling them ’theoretical details’ tells me that this ’disscusion’ is not only cynical, but pointless from the start. (like that is a surprise)
Again, ask your self (no need to answer me) would you still think the same if you do not have cuban experience, but let say, from a certain countries in ME. often mentioned in news in recent years? (leveled to ruins, by 'mistake')

some facts
http://revista.drclas.harvard.edu/book/united-states-interventions

I guess I could name around thirty more cases around the world that ended quite bad for people or countries who found them self on receiveng end.
It seems to me that logical conclusion would be that the most feared thing for average guy should be corporate fascism, forced and disguised as a interest of a state. However, that is only my perspective

That was very well written Alex; it's amazing how people who live here can not see the forest for the trees. It's best not to soil brains that have been washed spotlessly clean. Now we go back to the music.

Austin feeding the poor.

Austin is not only the political Capital of Texas, it is also the liberal do-gooder Capital of Texas.  If there were no poor there, they would import them, so they could be seen on TV feeding them.   Doing something meaningful for the working poor??  No way.   That place is run by the rich elites, for the rich elites.

If you give ANYTHING away for free, someone will show up to receive it.

If you go to certain Walmart stores in Dallas, there will a line of men at the end of the check stations offering to charge your purchases on their cards.  They charge your food purchases to their welfare card, and you give them the same amount in cash.   Done right out in the open.  The clerks go along with it.   Has happened to me several times.   Even happens in front of DPD officers.

Was with a good friend once in Mississippi, in his car.  He parked in a super market parking lot, waited a few minutes, a woman came out, walked over to the car, he gave her 60 dollars in cash, she gave him her welfare card.   He went to buy more than 60 dollars worth of stuff at a store, and she went to get her nails done, I guess.  Or get her fix.   Had a baby with her.

Your Federal and State tax dollars in action.

I could go on and on but, we are back to music.   I just can't let all that liberal clap trap go unchallenged.

Cheers

Rok, this is the honest to God truth; when I was getting home treatment after surgery, the lady treating me was telling about welfare cheats; she even knew a lady who was living in "Ladue" on section 8. Ladue is where the richest people in St. Louis live.

Get back to the music.
