While it sounds like a pretty fuzzy study. There seems to be a growing consensus  among scientists that exercise retards loss of  function. That would be physical and mental in every respect, reading, critical thinking, as well as walking and bicycling. So, it is likely to be correct. 

This has been known for some time.

It's safe to say that exercising the brain is necessary for overall health, but it won't prevent a possible predisposed condition-Glen Campbell? 

Just like arthritic conditons, you can do all the exercise/diet you want, but  until medical science catches up, it will take over it most cases. 

The music drowns out the screaming knuckleheads, the vitriolic politicians and the kids, yes those darn kids.  Of course I’ll live longer and be happier with Tina T playing at 85db. No brainer if you ask me.

Yeah like sitting in the front row,of a heavy metal show...having your ears blown out.But playing a instrument does help the mind think.I like taking long walks,7 to 10 miles...helps,you think and clears,my mind.Listening to the sounds,of mother nature and not listening to audio books,or even music.But that's just me.

Pure antidote at this point, but I would say that if listening to music protects the aging brain, then playing an instrument improves the aging brain. 

I noticed my brain fog disappear after a few weeks of learning the flute. I attributed it to getting more oxygen. In those first few weeks my lungs would cramp up often and I would get dizzy, I was not used to the oxygen!

I have felt less clumsy since learning the flute, and I attribute it to taking a slightly larger breath on the average, and in general just being more aware of things.

I think it's getting back to normal (not improving) by playing musical instrument. Our brain and ears suffer from un-natural hi-fi electronic sounds from every day life for all our lives (speaker sounds on cell phones, radios, audio systems, etc). There is no study about side-effects of un-natural electronic sounds yet. However, I am feeling how bad un-natural sounds are since I acquired a natural sound audio system few years ago. 

I agree with you that listening the natural sound more results reduced brain fog and less clumsiness, more energy, clear vision, etc. People need get away from un-natural sounds for their health.  Alex/Wavetouch audio
