So, by extension, as speakers are made of a handful of materials, what is the ideal material the oh enlightened one? mdf |
While at one time a few years ago I was up to almost 150 pairs, I am now hoarding about 50 pairs. Ten pairs are set up in six rooms plus front yard and back yard. I still have the second pair of speakers that I bought, JBL L-150s from Illinois Audio in Downers Grove (IIRC). The first pair were passed along to a buddy who kept them for almost forty years. I’ve tried 15-20 brands over the years. There was a much greater jump in sound quality from the hifi consoles of the fifties to those JBL L-150s of 1976 than in the 43 years since, IMO. Many of the speakers that I bought in the 80s, 90s, 00s are long gone, but what appears to be my ending collection of setup speakers (given my age and health) isn’t far removed from starting point. I’ve gotten a tremendous amount of enjoyment out of almost all of them and am now almost completely free of the itch to buy anything else. I don’t believe I would be able to make any significant improvements over what I have now. After almost 50 years, wife still hasn’t complained.

Carpathian, I’d be interested in hearing what you have. Anyone who’s owned so many has to have accumulated a lot of knowledge about them... |
Actually...as little as possible....radical, Yes. *G*
And what there is of it...is PVC....foamed sheet, aka Sintra.
Yes, I can hear you snicker....but, then again...I'm Not building boxes....;)

Consider the current Ohm speakers....
Now
Throw the cabinet away....*S* |

Hi, doodle 6. I don’t understand. Do you think I have owned a lot of speakers or kenjit has owned a lot of speakers? Because this thread is not alluding to either conclusion. |
Nope not for me,,going around swaping speakers,, I am old school, I started my research way back in early 1970;' sand when the I finally had to hang up my Philips 2 ways,,I went on another search. SEAS Thors. Bought the kit back in 2000ish, never looked elsewhere, Been with me now 20 yrs, and will be the only speaker til end of my road. About to have Madisound rebuild my xovers,,and good-to-go,,except one day i might recone one or 2 of the lower midbass, as my cat had used it as a scratch post and ripped 2 holes in the sourrounds. No bid deal, sonds just fine. did you say 50 speakers in 9 years,,,lol,,hahah,,too funny.

@kenjit "
yes most diy designs are just glorified mdf cabinets." then in a response to this question
So, by extension, as speakers are made of a handful of materials, what is the ideal material the oh enlightened one? mdf

@thecarpathian , I’m the op. I was trying to get to the bottom of what speakers Kenjit has but then had to defend why I’ve had so many speakers over the past 8 years (around 22 pairs of speakers).
I am curious as to what speakers Kenjit listens to because he’s on many occasions said that we’ve all been duped, we have crappy hearing, any off the shelf generic speaker is suitable for us. He’s stated that all speakers sound horrible, so I was wondering what he listens to at home and if he’s satisfied. If he’s not satisfied, why come to an audio website just to tell us all that audio products suck and that we have been duped, have crappy hearing, and don’t enjoy our stereo set-ups.
Doodle, sounds like you’ve got a good, if not great, wife 👍 |

I have had the same pair of speakers since 1984---Apogee Scintilla Ribbons. Still have them and enjoy them more than ever.
If you ever want to part with them, let me know. I have the amps to drive the heck out of them at 1 ohm setting! Just to answer the query, I have currently got 14 speakers in my systems (including one AV room) as well as a half dozen Sonos network speakers. |
I envy b_limo's ability to experience all those speakers. More importantly the audible sonic reference he may have acquired. While most of my Hi-Fi speakers systems were bettered by their replacements their sale helped supported those merry-go-round years.
To my surprise many of my vintage Electric / Double Bass amplifiers and cabinets have appreciated in value and collectability. Unknowingly, I kept them simply for their utility of size. Heading out with an instrument and the Avalon U5 DI is way cool. |
Hey, b_limo, I know, we are definitely on the same page when it comes to him and his ridiculous threads. Big time expert on any and all speakers. Yet won't answer the simplest of questions. He's also recently stated he doesn't own any speakers. It's doodle 6 that seems to be confused......hence my response to him.

Well, you never know with speakers. Just pulled out a pair KEF ref 201/2 from the wardrobe and they surprised me with sounding pretty good with great imaging in a new room. Best not to sell anything. Your rooms, hearings and preferences changes all the time. |
I too have purchased a large amount of speakers over the past nine years but not 50 pairs. More like 30. But then I have three listening rooms and a recording studio at home and another system in my office plus compact systems in my vacation cabin and garage. I haven't acquired any speakers recently except for a pair of Tannoy Baby Gold monitors that I picked up from a large local recording studio that was closing. I'm not using them because, after much trial-and-error, I'm pleased with what I have. But the Tannoys were such a good deal I couldn't pass them up. I'm sure some of you can relate to that. |
Carpthian, you’re correct, I was confused. I thought you were the one who said he’d had 50 pairs when it was actually b limo who’d posted that. So my question should go to him: B Limo, what speakers have you ended up with after trying so many? |
Hey, doodle. Yeah, I'm definitely closer to five than fifty!
|
Carpathian, you are the rarest phenomenon: a sane audiophile. |
i doubt you would need 50+ speakers if you were truly satisfied ,,,, Duder, Speakers are like sexy woman every one excels in a different way One day you will get it. this man is Spot on |
lol, Anyone who has owned that many speakers is not enjoying them as much as they think.! Guess again big Dog. It's like Drinking Tequila. Why would you stick with 1800 that's crazy if you do it. It's like Dating a French woman then moving to a Polish babe . Kicking & Asking yourself why didn't i do that long ago |
Speakers are such an enjoyable part of our hobby....even though I am satisfued with mine....I could switch them out daily if it were practical. Speakers are a work of Art. |
