Depends, but often true, I'm afraid. :) It doesn't really make the preamp sound any better or worse. It's not a great way to evaluate the quality of a preamp's sound, so just brush it off.
I think every preamp I've ever owned with a mechanical source selector did that, regardless of cost. Turn other sources off is the fix , don't worry about it
