Cary slp 98p upgrade

I am planning on upgrading a cary 98 pre with phono. I have purchased the parts .Has anybody done this on their own? Is there someplace on the web that can help?

thanks

I have a question. If you know which parts to buy, how did you come up with that? That might be a better direction to go. You bought the parts. There is more than one way to go. Which valves are you going to use? I see all kinds of options, I'm not sure I'd be that anxious to start that project without a clear path to a working preamp again.

BUT I'm no spring chicken either.

You just looking for the experience or what?

There is a pic with a MM installed.

Schematic should be somewhere. Need a switch for the front to, if it's not already there.

I had two thoughts. Let Cary do the upgrade and while it's there have it upgraded to F1 specs.

My SLP-98 is upgraded, partially by myself, and originally from Cary with better parts than the old Upscale F1 upgrade from a decade ago.  Here is my recommendation, fwiw.  If you are not sure, stop here and send it to a well practiced tech with proper measurement equipment.  It's not just about slapping in parts and crossing your fingers.  There are other things they can check while they have it open.  It will be totally worth it if the tech knows what they are doing.

@dpm2340 hoping you chose the right parts for max benefit and reliability. If you get stuck and need a good tech, I might know of someone to recommend via DM/PM privately.  The 98 is totally worth upgrading if done properly.  Best of luck.

Thanks for making me feel old....LOL. I guess I won't talk about my Infinity RS1Bs anymore...

Hehehe, ooops. @russ69 Sorry 'bout that.  Well, if you have an early original F1 98, there are better caps, other bits inside, v-control, wiring, and a few things to upgrade inside bringing it to yet another level. Encouraged a friend and he had two 98s sitting side by side with my former Cary amp, testing, comparing the F1 and newer upgraded SLP-98 version. A notable difference, like lifting a veil off it all, deeper larger soundstage, more texture and tone.   It was so good, he had another $17k CJ preamp prepping it for resale recovering funds $. A nice surprise for him.

I have no doubt and I'm keeping my SLP98 forever but since I'm listening with one ear now, I'm good with what I have. It's kind of a bummer but the things a good preamp do are a bit lost on me now. I'm still playing music but I can't really be decerning on the golden ear stuff like I use to do. Thanks for the tips, others will find it useful.

In looking at the insides of your amp, the connections to the power on/off/standby switch looks to be press fittings. Can you confirm if they are pressed or soldered. I just sold an SLP 98 to someone and when it arrived the switch was faulty and we're trying to determine the best was to sort it out. If the connections are pressed, it makes it super easy. Otherwise I'll need to walk him through soldering it.

Thanks
