Define better....I find VR4Jr to be interesting for its full range coverage but not particularly shinning in any department. So you can easily do much better bass or midrange or treble extension or even all three combined. I would go Gershman RX20 or even a pair of Devore Gibbon 3 monitors with a good sub.
With the economy tanking and lots of folks dumping their stuff (or soon will be) it should be fairly easy to find 8K+ speakers for around 3K so the field is wide open to find something 'better'. I have a local guy selling me his Focus Audio FS888, less then 2 years old, retailed over 10K for $3600...sweet
VS4Jr are awesome speakers. When I bought mine I compared them to some heavy hitters. I agree with some of the posters, finding better (in their price range) doubt it, different, yes. Oh and the guy that said Vandersteen, I had the Vandersteen 2ce sig ii and the VS are IMO head and shoulders better - I found the Vandies fuzzy by comparison. Some of the other stuff listed above is OK and probabably better then the vr4 in one area or another but they each have their own faults too and most retail far above the VR4jr when new.
cheers and good listening (oh and good bargain hunting)
Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , You gays are awesome, What about Aerial Acoustics 8B ? Do I have to try? & "Arkio"I agree with you about Vandersteen & what do you think about Aerial 8B? Thanks again, everyone.
I agree with Shaky, it isnt hard to find a much better speaker for that amount and some of his list are great places to start. As far as the Vandersteen....if I could snag a used pair of Quatro's for $3000 I would in a minute!
Samzx12 - WTF "take advantage of people"..."consistently try to low ball" Where do you get off insulting me? Its dolts like you that would buy a speaker for 10K and turn around and sell it the next day for 1/3 the cost and then insult people like me who are more then willing to take them off your hands. I hope you sleep well tonight after you finish listennig to you Bose wave stereo.
I have the Von Schweikert VR4JR speakers and alsmost sold them - until I got rid of their datlink between the upper and lower modules and biwired the speaker with Morrow Audio SP2 silver/copper cables. Holy Schmoly! They are entirely different speakers once biwired. You need a cable that is split about 24 inches at the speaker end cause of the distance between the upper and lower module binding posts.
They have a very liquid mid-range, nice tight bass, and nice highs. Overall the presentation is, to me, highly pleasing and light years ahead of what you get using their stock connector between the upper and lower modules. These speakers love power; I run 300 wpc Shen Ya monoblocks (first 100 watts in class A)on these babies.
Selling these speakers would've been the bonehead move of the century.....
10K speakers for 3.6K is hardly taking advantage or lowballing. It is just about right for a normal market, much less the situation with the economy now. And remember, nobody is holding a gun to the seller's head. People should take personal responsiblity for their actions.
Now if Arkio was duping senior citizens out of their retirement money by scamming them, you might have an issue. But finding used audio bargains on Agon is hardly the same thing.....
Wow! Between the taking advantage of people and Bose Wave radio comment I dont know who is playing more dirty:) Chadnliz (System | Threads | Answers)
LOL....I am not trying to. His post looks like he prays on trying to lowball people. Trust me I have got my fair share of insults here selling items and getting lowballed. There are several here that lay and wait. They know who they are and if the shoe fits...SAD :)
I had a pair of the VR4 JRs. Bought them 9 mo. Old from the orig owner. One of the rear or front tweeters was bad when I got them but I wasnt sure just what was wrong then. Ultimately I sent the top modules back to VSA and they replaced all the tweeters at my request.
Once they were run in completely I sold them. During their stay I tried a lot of tweaks, bi wiring, amps, and preamps. And finally found one combination that worked well. So I sold them right afterwards. Funny spend a year trying this and that then when it finally gets good sell them. Im glad I did though.
I bought Silverline speakers next. Sonata IIIs. Brand new. They work well with about anything sure theyll work better with the right match or synergistic pairing, but overall the tweeter is improved, the bass more prodigious, and the midrange not as dry and you wont need two foot jumpers, shotguns, or lengthy lead in bi wires to hook em up. Nor will placement matter nearly as much with the Silverlines as it did with the JRs. Oh, yeah, and the esthetic of the Sonatas is far better.
The JRS ARENT A BAD SPEKER SYSTEM for their used prices around $2K +/- but you can do better and have less trouble pairing stuff with Silverline speakers. More $$$? Yeah but worth it I believe . And theres a lot more out there to look at Im sure. I almost bought Tyler Acoustics. Ty has a large following and offers great looking cabinets, and value. So do Phase Techs top tier line and good value to boot. Sonus Fabers new Domus is highly praised too in the online reviews. If I could have dealt with the height of the Vienna Acoutics Mahlers, I would have bought a used pair of them without a second thought used of course but theyre too tall for me.
Another thought I feel important is this as important as are speakers, my exp has shown me having better stuff in front of them is the real deal. Ive heard very expensive speakers with middle high end gear . And mid high end speakers with very high end front ends and the latter combo was far superior to the former. Its wahts up front that counts! to coin an TV commercial from the sixties or seventies.
Arkio is right and having been on both sides of the buy high-sell low-lose a lot, I must admit hiend audio offers tremendeous bargains. But it is not just because of neconomy going wrong or obsolescence, it is just supply-demand. The deal is to stay away from wanting that blockbuster well-reviewed gear for about a year or so and then use the heavy supply of second hand and the deperate Agon sellers to get a low price on those fads. VR4JR, Gallo Ref 3, Zen Adagio, JM Lab Electra are only a few one can get for less than 50% of orginal price or even less. I would look at a used pair of Electra 936-37-46 if I were you.
I agree there are lots of good bargains and I am not trying to really rip Arkio for finding good bargains. Hell we all like to save money :) Maybe I took his post wrong and if I did I apologize.
My question to you is have you heard the Electra 946? How would you describe the sound? Cool, too detailed, smooth, well rounded, full, etc.... Thanks!
Hell if you are going to spend 3 grand, the Emerald Physic's cost in this range brand new and are excellent sonic full-range peerformers. I have both the EP's and VR4JR's in two systems sitting side by side. I am very impressed by both and happen to really like the sonics, though presented differntly, of both.
