Jewel, I can understand your reaction to Diana's previous material. While the reviews of Look of Love have been extremely varied, I think we have a tendency to like or be more attached to our first exposure to something special. Look into Jacintha's three releases as well. Have fun.
There's been a lot of buzz lately surrounding Norah Jones' CD, I own it myself and think it's well recorded and very good overall. But are there any other people out there besides me that think she kinda has a odd quirky voice? |

Try Diane Schuur (especially "Swingin'for schuur") Patricia Barber (any of hers), The best of Joan Baez, The best of Crystal Gail ("I'll get over you") Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies (any of them) and finally Lucinda Williams (any also). These should keep you listening for awhile. |

if you haven't heard Lorrie Morgan's Secret love and the Dianne Schuur's Swingin'for Schuur... you should add them to your collection... Patricia Barber, Mary Timmins, Lucinda Williams, and Diana Krall for sure... I have to agree with those who may not play Jennifer Warnes cd's quite as often as the others. |

I just bought Jennifer Warnes "lush life" and once again I must admit I was mistaken... She has a wonderful voice and sings beautifully. In my earlier posting, I recommended Lorrie Morgan's "Secret Love".. She is a country singer and this album is a departure from that and is nothing like her other recordings. Both Dianne Schuur and Lorrie Morgan are strong singers, unlke Norah Jones, which may put some of you off. I still feel that most of you will find it worth your time. |

Italian talent of Gigiola Cinquetti, her cd Non Ho L'Eta on WEA label, contains 3 great italian songs + others. Great voice. Poggia is a must to hear if you love Italian female vocalist. |
I second those who mentioned Iris DeMent. Whew, man! She is something else. Maybe an aquired taste for some (like Dylan, Tom Waites, Leonard Cohen, et al.), but an incredible voice!

I just wanted to add that the singer's voice in Halou makes my toes curl (and in a good way).

Alternative-with-femme-vox: Curve, Switchblade Symphony, Tori, anything Nicole Blackman has worked on, Dot Allison, Laurie Anderson (yes, really try _Live at Town Hall NYC September 19-20 2001_), Jane Siberry, Happy Rhodes, Kate Bush, Lush, Lisa Gerrard/Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Garbage. More traditionally: Jewel, both Coles Holly and Paula, Lori Carson, Lisa Germano (possibly alternative), Alison Moyet (started out more alternative, has been doing mainstream rhythm and blues type stuff more recently). Obviously, in no particular order. Lots more I can't think of right now. |
I don't know about the absoulte best,but if you like a great mix of vocals,piano,orchestra and precussion, then Vanessa Carlton's "Be Not Nobody" is great. It works well for auditioning equipment,especially speakers because it is a great recording as far as quality and it has some dynamics as well. And the Music is very good overall too. |

Connie Dover is the most under appreciated female artist of our time. She has four albums out. Her musical style includes Scottish, Irish, and early American music.
I recommend you try the title "Somebody" and pay attention to her rendition of "Cantus".
You won't be disappointed. |

Alison Krauss "Forget About It" is an outstanding CD but I just bought a CD by a group called HEM entitled "Rabbit Songs" where I like the lead singer even more than Alison Krauss (or anyone else for that matter). HEM's lead singer is Sally Ellyson and she is simply wonderful. |
Lucinda Williams has remained for almost 25 years as a truly original, unique, gifted, unpretentious, singer songwriter with little to no equal. To make an analogy, she is the female Lyle Lovett of folk/country/popular/whatever music. I fascinate at how the recording industry struggles so greatly in trying to put her and Lyle Lovett into a pigeon holed category for their convience of description. The fact that she supercedes music industry classification categories says it all. The very sad fact that someone with Lucinda Williams' enormous talent and virtually unmatched top quality and timeless recordings throughout her career, is not a well known name in most american households explains exactly what is wrong with american modern music. But alas!! Lucinda Williams has a new CD coming out 4/8/03 (World Without Tears). |

One of the advantages of liking who I like, is that they're all dead and you don't have to worry about missing a new album. Well, that's not entirely true, K.D.Lang is stunning and probably the only member of the current generation worth talking about.
My benchmarks, the people I compare the newbie's against are Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney. Yeah, Rosemary Clooney, who'd a thunk it but go listen to a couple of her albums. Also, Shirley Bassey can turn in a very electric performance and of course the lady who taught them all how to do it, Billie Holiday.
But if I was being sent to a desert island and was told that I could take the music of only one singer it would be Ella, in my opinion, the best female singer ever. Course it sure would be nice to have a little Sinatra along on that island. The Ella in Berlin album is fantastic and my opinion hasn't changed on that subject in forty years. |
Mary Black on "Babes in the woods" cd. Listen to "thorn upon the rose" She is using a stereo mic and on a trully great system, you can tell which way she turns her head after each phrase. Amazing vocalist. Jennifer Warrens is too harsh, a lot like Linda Ronstadt. Barbara Striesand is one of my favorites of all time. |
