Banana plug recommendations

I own a 5 meter set of Acoustic BBQ speaker cables terminated with KLEI Classic Harmony bananas at the amp end and large spades at the speaker end.  At the time I bought them, Bill Dion strongly recommended the KLEI's instead of my previous screw-ons WBT's because they sounded the best to him of all the bananas that he offered. He wasn't wrong about sound quality. The cables sound magnificent, although, of course, I haven't tried them with any other connectors. I have emailed Bill to ask his recommendation for a substitute, but he is out of the cable business and I won't bug him if he doesn't care to respond or doesn't have other recommendations.

I just got a new Apollon Audio amp and have found that one of the KLEI's is pretty loose in the standard WBT binding post socket and keeps sliding out a bit because of the long cable's weight.  As a result, I have had instances of that channel cutting out until I twist the plug further into place and get it to stick.

I looked at that plug more closely and saw that the barrel looks visibly thinner than the others. It doesn't look damaged or anything, but it's oddly slightly smaller.  (I would attach a pic, but, now that I have it lodged in place pretty well, I hesitate to pull it out again.)

I now think I want to reterminate the cables' amp end so that I have a more robust connection in the binding post.

So, this is the question:  Is there another banana plug that has competitive sonic quality but that is a bit more rigid and that makes solid contact?  The KLEI sound quality seems fine, but, after a previous incident that required repairs and now this barrel issue, I am not impressed with build quality where the attached cable has some weight or not much strain relief.

Worse comes to worst, I could be okay with adding a new set of KLEI's. (Unfortunately, it doesn't look as though I can buy just a single red plug to replace the smaller barreled one.)  I just think it advisable for something that fits more snugly and is a bit more rigid.

I can already "hear" the naysayers telling me just to get Amazon Basics because no one can hear the difference, so I will stipulate that I might not hear the difference, myself, but humor me here.  This isn't a big ticket item and I can afford to waste the money.  In the meantime, if you have found differences in quality, I definitely am interested in your thoughts.

Make sure to apply the heat shrink to the barrels to ensure you never accidentally short them.  My speakers use an external crossover which required 6 pairs of bananas per speaker.  2 pairs from amp to crossover, 4 pairs between crossover and speakers.  The amp to crossover cable is massive, 11 gauge and has to plug in vertically.  Absolutely no issues.

Before you buy new plugs, you could try inserting a nail setter or similar to spread the Klee banana wider.

If I understand your question correctly, I would insert the blunt end of the correct size drillbit to enlarge the banana, and that will fix the issue for you.

@kmitch12 , that is a brilliant suggestion and I wish it had occurred to me before placing an order for these plugs, which Bill Dion recommended. I trust Bill's ears completely, so I went with that recommendation.   The KLEI's may well sound "better," but they really are fragile.

@fuzztone , those do look lovely and they are priced reasonably.

Thanks, everybody, for the suggestions.

If you have a sturdier banana plug gently use it (insert slightly) to enlarge the KLEI.

@mikerubin - take a look at this link

Banana Plugs | My Audio Alchemy (image99.net)

Aabout half way down the page there’s a section

  • What if the plug slips out of the Binding Post?
  • I perform this operaton every time I insert the Bannanas

I use an older style brass banana to widen the KLE Banana plugs

- this method was approved by Keith Louie Eichman

Provided you don’t plug them in repeatedly they will hold securely.

I’ve been using them for many years without problem.

ALSO - If you find the pins are not long enough, just remove the plastic housing and file it shorter on the angled end - you can gain an extra 1.5 mm of pin.

Unfortunately, these Bananas are about as good as it gets - I’ve tried many others and they all pale in comparison

Hope that helps - Steve

Are these cables directional? If not and your speakers accept banana plugs just reverse the cables and use bananas on the speaker ends.

Connectors play a big role. Don’t get crap connectors. If you like the cables, see if the Furutech will work. Spades or bananas.

Thanks, gents. As I mentioned above, I am having the cables reterminated with plugs that Bill Dion recommended, so my ship has sailed.

@audphile1 , the cables aren’t directional, but the banana receptacles on the speaker binding posts are being used by my jumpers and the binding posts on the amp are too close to one another, the XLR /RCA toggle switch, and the inputs for me to be comfortable using large spades there.
