I met my wife in Ukraine (long story) and her exposure to music was nothing more than a really cheap boombox.
Coming to America and seeing my setup which was at the time a pair of Def Tech BP2000's AR15 pre Classe DAC 1, Theta Transport and a pair of Classe amps, she really didn't understand what that all meant. She loved the music however and now 7 years later has been on-board with all our stereo purchases. She has very keen ears and has spent countless evenings critiqing tubes, cables, positioning, you name it. She picked the last pair of speakers we purchased, our MBL 121's. When I bought the line arrays (LS6's) she wanted the bigger ones (LS9's). I had to talk her into the smaller ones as they would reach nearly to the ceiling!
Although we aren't by any means wealthy, most of our cash has gone to audio. I think we're bad for each other in that way. We've spent a crazy amount of money on audio and listen almost nightly.
Rare indeed :) Oh ya, I married her. |
Desalvo55, does you wife have a sister? Hopefully, single. |
The equalizer was the first thing every woman noticed and commented on. All the buttons and slides seemed to draw their attention. It wasn't even connected, it was there for show. I called it my "chick magnet". |
Maybe speakers are like dogs and tend to resemble their owners.
Might be some truth in that?
That might be a good scenario for speakers being a turn on for some women, but not for those speaker owners perhaps challenged in this regard otherwise. |
DonÂ’t underestimate the symbolic attraction of tubes, especially big tubes - phallic shaped, red hot and glowing, bursting with stray electrons. Heh-heh-heh... |
|
Grab a lawnmower, rake, edgetrimmer, weedwhacker - grab a bucket and water some Meguires car wash, then wash her car. Show her you can move more then just biasing the tubes and changing out a CD -and show you have some amount of physical fitness and not look like these Audio reviewers. No offense.
Believe me, that will turn them on a lot more then justifying to them a 20K purchase of Magico Mini's and CAry SLP-98, CAD-120 with the tubes glowing and nice meters. Being single (married now for 5) for virtually 15 + years of my audiophile life that seemed to work a bit more with my dates then a new pair of speakers.
I'm just sayin. :o) |
maybe. the other day i got a text from my girlfriend that said "i can't believe you spent $1200 on that peachtree thing for your office... you're lucky it's pretty" granted this is an amplifier we are talking about, not speakers. though she is obsessed with her NAD integrated and monitor audio BX2's i got for her apartment. |
Sure, they care about the look of it so it matches the window treatments. But I don't think this should be confused as a "turn-on". Now since you bought the NAD for her that is great - I gave my wife some Epos speakers....which is about to go on Audiogon becuase she is really not interested anymore in the idea of that 2nd system.
I can say that during my time being single - not a one thought my system was a turnon, let alone the speakers
BTW - my interpretation is you are not living together. If you ever do, or exchange the I do's - Try this exercise :o) - come home one day and say, "honey I would like to max out my (no our) credit card and purchase some 20K Wilson speakers (you know the cheaper speakers that Absolute sound reviews), with the pretty paino gloss finish. Also that money we were saving for our vacation and kitchen renovation will have to go on hold for 5 years or so as we pay off the speakers and the 10% interest". It may be longer as I may need to purchase another AMp to monoblock it to drive those babies better...can you please move your grandmother's antique table to the other room or put it in storage so I have more floorspace"? I am saying most of this very light hearted by the way, please take this as conversation...but i don't think I am that far off base. |
Imo,
You are brilliant!
The secret to getting speakers to turn on a woman is BUY THEM FOR HER!!!! |
Shortly after I met my wife in 1988, I gave her my Aiwa AD-6550 which was a very nice looking cassette deck to use with her piddling 70's vintage Lafayette all in one compact stereo (remember those?) in her apartment where the built in cassette no longer worked.
The rest is history....... |
Desalvo55 found bliss with a woman from the Ukraine who appreciates sound quality and loves music. Any observations or comments as to whether non Anglo American women are more inclined to appreciate sound quality and would prefer music to be an integral part of their lives, instead of watching a lot of Orange County Housewives and How to Marry a Millionaire type of TV shows. |
Finding mysterious "woman from the Ukraine who appreciates sound quality and loves music" is a chance one in a million. More practical solution for all you young audiophiles might be to marry a man (not that there is anything wrong with that). |
That's funny.:o) I think we should add "mysterious woman from the Ukraine who appreciates sound quality, loves music and is not looking for that golden oppurtunity to be a US citizen and not leave said new hubby, taking HALF of his possesions" :o)Which may or may not include those sexy speakers that made her fall in love oops LUST with said hubby in the first place.... |
Hi Jazzybs - hmmm not easy, try hanging out at concerts or live music events and you will have a better avenue to meet women who appreciate music (not to be confused with giving the green light in spending 25K on Boulder Monoblocks and 25K Wilson's). I met my wife at what is called "First Friday" each month where they close down a block downtown and have some hard jazz groups perform - draws a pretty big crowd. In my case it was a plus when she listened to the system with her favorite artists... but to be honest I had bunch of other priorities I was looking for in a girl then one "liking" my stereo. |
No, but if you send me $19.95 in three easy payments, I'll send you a product guaranteed to turn your 6 1/2" woofer into at least an 8" woofer, if not 10". Then you'll be the audiophile apple of all the ladies eyes.... |
Pdj - That sounds like a bit of a stretch. |
With the right woman yes. The first time my girlfriend came over she ran her hand over my macasssar ebony finished speakers and said "beautiful". Then when I put on some jazz she wanted to listen for hours....A keeper :) |
Kijanki, because the mysterious woman from the Ukraine who appreciates sound quality and loves music, statistically is probably not in the cards for me and the sometimes annoying fact that I am attracted to women eliminates a male as a partner; Lougiants suggestion of using live music events as a filter to meet someone is a good one and probably where I should focus my efforts. Of course if nothing works out, being single sure beats what I have dealt with the last couple of years, and hey I can always look forward to the fact that in thirty years or so this attraction to women will not be as strong as it is now. |
Jazzybs,
Yes, attraction to women is a drawback and even can be financial disaster for many, home (lost) being the most expensive part of the audio system. Meeting women at the concert is good for common interest in particular music genre and might get closer to appreciation of good sound. |
"I just get blank stares when I talk about my hobby to women."
Include men in that too! Blank stares all around!
However, there are exceptions. I met my girlfriend by helping her buy a system. The most interesting thing is that she used to listen to music while doing other things, but now, if the stereo is on, she doesn't want to do anything, BUT listen. She said that she never knew that music could sound this way.
She's somewhat odd though. I have a pair of home brew speakers using Newform tweeters (45 inch) and she loves the way they look. The Newforms are not pretty to most people. Heck, even I don't think they are attractive, but they do sound good!
As for other people... Everyone who listens to my system is amazed at the clarity, but the conversation never goes beyond that.
As a whole, women are less interested than men. I think that when women look at a large speaker they see a good place for another chair.
BTW, I used to work for a drycleaners and one day this guy came in and talked for an hour about clothes. I was never so bored in my life and it dawned on me how people felt when I spoke about audio. I've kept my mouth shut since then. |
When I was 18, a number of girls loved my Polk Audio RT2000p Towers. Suffice to say, those speakers played a roll in some great memories back then... ;) :)
Nowadays the results aren't quite the same. Perhaps it's due to my not being young and hairless anymore... Whatever the reason, having quality stuff can add 'bonus' points to the female equation, as it tends to expose your passion for well crafted goods and the arts (music). |
well after the numerous girls i have taken back to my home to have a little one on one time none of them has mentioned a word about my stereo! i guess its because my bedroom has no stereo |
mine either. tho, they always hear music! :) |
Are audiophile speakers a turn on for single women...
Not that I've noticed....
Larry |
I think I'm going to break up with my girl and marry my speakers. My speakers makes less noise. |
Yes, if her name is Linn Klimax |
If her name was Linn Klimax, I would put her up for auction on Audiogon and recoup some of the cost for maintaining her ;) |
If she can sell them and make a profit. Which is not very likely ! |
You have to decide if you are going to spend on women or gear in general. If you have so much you can afford both, more power to you.
They are both money pits, women being the far bigger one if you really analyze it. |
Rgs92, sadly it's true. I loves the women...what's the saying? You can't live with them, and you can't shoot them.
Disclaimer: The above statements are for entertainment purposes only. No woman was ever shot during the making of thread. |
|
Seriously, sometimes I get more excited about my speakers than women. Is that wrong? |
"Seriously, sometimes I get more excited about my speakers than women. Is that wrong?"
No it isn't, as long as you're not making love to them. |
I have had different shapes and colors, the Avantgarde Uno in green metallic seemed to create a lot of attention, the women would stop talking in mid sentence at first sight and walk around the speaker and monoblocks, like a cat examining a foregin object. What a laugh. It was the same thing with all women, young and old. I thought my wife would hate them, she loved them. She was sorry to see those speakers go. |
Renmeister, are you saying your Avantgarde Uno's made those women "horny"? |
|
i don't think it will matter much ... best case ... "those look nice" it's like a great car .. they know it's expensive but could care less how it handles .. Well in most cases .. I'm not trying to generalize............. Although I think i might just have! |
Not only do most if not all women not like audio equipment or the steep prices of our "good stuff", they are really appalled when they see the massive jumble of wires behind the equipment that I'm too lazy to organize. LOL |
Would you believe some high performance speakers are being featured in Elle magazine? |
"Would you believe some high performance speakers are being featured in Elle magazine?"
Are these actual ads for the speaker or reviews? |
Are these actual ads for the speaker or reviews? Not advertising but some sort of pictorial product feature, I believe. Look for some rather retro looking horn speakers in an upcoming issue :) |
Yes the new speaker The Big Bank Book!! |
In the 90s I brought my girlfrined with me to pick up my new Pass Aleph 3. She thought ti was a bit crazy to be spending so much. While we were waiting, the salesman had us sit in a room with Pass Aleph Pre & Power, Audio Physic Virgo sepakers, can't remember the source. She said "Wow, why doesn't your stereo sound like this?" I explained we were listening to over $20,000 worth of stuff, and she said I should "Just buy it." The salesman said I should marry her. He was probably right. |
OK HonestI:
I'll bite. So did you marry her? |
No, I didn't. It's a long story, but after 4 years, we broke up. I had hoped we would get back together. I called her a year and a half later, and she had just gotten engaged. She was the only person I've ever met who I seriously considered marrying. But being single has its advantages, too. I have no regrets, and I hope she's happy. For all I know, we'd be divorced by now, and she'd have my house and stereo. |
"For all I know, we'd be divorced by now, and she'd have my house and stereo." Classic. Based on current statistics, you would have had greater than 50% chance of this happening if you married her. Enjoy your stereo system. |
Ahead of nose hair, behind a uniform. |
Never really could tell what they thought of my stereo. They usually end up walking past my hot tub just to get to it. So, uh, they're mind is pretty much occupied by the time we get to the stereo. Not that I really mind......... |
don't know what worked but at one time in my life i saw lots of rug burns... |
