Adding a sub

It certainly does make a big difference. Likely why every mastering and recording studio, theater, concert and club venue that I’ve ever played in or visited uses the direct unobstructed low level output signal from pre-amplification.

Connecting a sub through the 'sub out' on a preamp is not the way to go.

Oh and I would recommend getting two.  I’ve done both the single and dual subs.  Two is much better, better soundstage, imaging dynamics.  It’s weird but two seem to make everything better.  I’m sure there are folks on this forum who can explain it, I haven’t researched it so I can’t but I have experienced the effects.

I have a couple of Rel T5x subs that are great but don’t go as low as the SVS SB 1000 does.  While I’ve never owned one,  like @soix I’ve never heard of the transformer whine in them.  Rhythmik subs get a lot of recommendations as well and are in the same performance and price range as the SVS.  

I have an SB2000 and have followed SVS for years and I’ve never heard, nor heard of, transformer whine — ever.  Only thing I’d say would be to get two SB1000 Pros or at least plan to add another one down the road because two are a substantial improvement over one sub for multiple reasons.  Best of luck.
