Johnny Cash - Rest in Peace
For me, John was one of those dudes who was always there in your consciousness from childhood (even though I didn't grow up with his music), like an iconic image - the perfect archetype. Dependable, uncorrupted. Personally, I don't own much of his...
Acoustic Signature Mambo vs Nottingham, Teres, Etc
Never heard it, but aren't AS products sold only through Needle Doctor? I was not well-pleased during my one attempt to deal with them in the past (and that included with the owner). The 'tables do look interesting though. But don't get me started...
Review: Acoustic Zen Hologram II Speaker cable
Funny - I just realized that I first answered this thread back in January, and then again in August when it popped up for a second time, thinking I hadn't done so before. Hey, at least my responses are generally consistent with each other, even if...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital?
Yes Plato, the everlasting problem with R2R - aside from its particular brand of impermanence, which is in actuality likely no worse in its way than the real-world impermanence of LP's (and who knows? maybe even CD's) - was always its lack of comm...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital?
Just the other day I was doing some comparitive listening to recordings I own in both formats, in order to help get a handle on some analog upgrades I've added recently. On some disks, the LP wins, on others, the CD. Some were about even, with str...
Deepest Bass in the Known Universe...
Who knew that black holes in distant galaxies contained adolescent males with cars?
Is heavy vinyl worth it?
IMO, the weight of the vinyl isn't much of a determining factor, and the extra-heavy audiophile pressings may be better because of their vinyl stock quality, and the mastering and pressing care that's taken, but the actual thickness of the record ...
Here's how a CD is made
Thanks for the link, it was a very interesting article. I was especially intrigued by the CD-testing machine described at the end - I wonder what such a device could reveal about the quality of CD-R blanks from different manufacturers.
Why can't I hear 20 years of phono 'progress'??
El Dee, you're right about the stylus shape of the V15VxMR (my calculations translate the Shure website data [given in mils] to be a mere 3.8 microns X a healthy 76 microns - which, while not the largest major-radius design going, definitely quali...
Why can't I hear 20 years of phono 'progress'??
Eldartford, a couple of thoughts:1) The shape of the stylus has a big influence upon the perceived level of surface noise, and the more radical 'line-contact' geometries are not generally found in mid-priced carts, or most MM carts generally. But ...
Mosfet amps A true compromise betw. tubes and SS?
Yes, resistors are passive, and so are capacitors (plus of course transformers, and wire). And both color the signal that passes through them (as do active devices like transistors), but both are necessary to construct circuits. Since an amp's pow...
Equipment found at the dump
And the best thing is (besides costing $zilch), they all have that great 'fresh from the dump' aroma you just can't get with used gear bought on Audiogon...
Mosfet amps A true compromise betw. tubes and SS?
Muralman1, are you certain that the Pass amps contain no resistors in the signal path? Also, I thought the 'Super-Symmetry' topology was implemented prior to the output stage. (I too have not heard of interstage coupling capacitors being referred ...
Do you own the last amp you'll ever buy?
Actually, let me ammend my above post: I'd not only need the right speakers, but also a willingness to spend a lot more money, plus a toleration for gear that's physically large and heavy and gives off too much heat - Hmmm...maybe I will be stayin...
Do you own the last amp you'll ever buy?
I can see myself wanting to try a set of high-powered P/P class-A triode OTL's some day, but I'd have to get the right speakers first...
