Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse....
Ultraviolet: I am not sure I know what you mean when you say that most live music is 'etched' and 'bright'. I have to assume you are talking about the sound of PA systems, not live acoustic music, but even so, none of the PA's I've heard sound 'et...
Best compilation CD you have made.
I'm glad you enjoy it - I never said it wasn't okay to. And I'm sure you wouldn't much enjoy one of my own comps, if that's of any consolation, but I'm not at all insistent that your (or anyone's) taste match mine. But I'll admit, I'm a music snob...
Balanced or RCA?
Score! (I've heard that expression used in hockey games.) Good for you - count one for our north-of-the-border audio skeptic. More money left over for poutine, eh?... ;^)
Best compilation CD you have made.
Well, just to make myself clear, it's not that I 'hate' these performers per se. I do think there's a good bit of overrating that goes on with a lot of this music (I am of the opinion that there's definitely an aspect of 'great white hope' favorit...
Best compilation CD you have made.
Todd - That comp filled up two 110 minute cassettes (guess I didn't leave out all that much :-) and was made long before I could even conceive of a CD-burner's existence...As a 'sound' however, the Chams aren't too typical of my overall listening ...
direct drive vs. belt drive?
There are at least theoretical and most likely practical advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. But at the level you're shopping for, I'd agree with Elizabeth and Steelhead that the overall construction quality of a turntable will have t...
Balanced or RCA?
It depends. I own both balanced and single-ended editions of otherwise identical interconnect, in two different cable types, all of which are 1m length. Between my internally-balanced DAC and my internally-balanced preamp, there's no question in m...
Best compilation CD you have made.
Ah, the compilation of a thoroughly accredited modern audiophile...Lord spare me... :-([Note: This is without a doubt thee most despicable post I've ever written on Audiogon, but I'm sorry, when it comes to music, I just can't help myself. One mig...
What to do when a crucial piece is in the shop?
Mother Nature is telling you to get out-of-doors a little more often... :-)
OP-AMPS in Theta
Well, I could open up my DSPro Basic IIIa and tell you what I see - but wouldn't you already own one yourself if you're interested in doing this?...
Balanced connection/amplification for phono?
Eldartford: My own experience with balanced connection in general is much like that of Jfrech and Sayas. I'm speaking specifically here of running a balanced source (in my case, a DAC) into a balanced preamplifier and doing instantaneous, level-ma...
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse....
Onhwy61: That's basically what I've been saying all along regarding the amp itself (read my above posts). My 'complaint' (if you want to call it that - it's not like I would have been buying a pair of these tomorrow anyway, no matter what ;^) has ...
Balanced connection/amplification for phono?
Mr. Hagerman exposes my lack of understanding of some of the finer points. I've read statements to the effect that "all phono cart's are inherently balanced devices" in audio magazines on a few different occasions, though I'm sorry I can't make sp...
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse....
Aboldor: Your linked post from NP sounds like a good answer for customers, but only in part. He still fails to address the questions I listed above, namely the realistic current-capability and speaker-matching issues. Maybe his "Manufacturer's Res...
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse....
Y'know Sean, I actually had not yet thoroughly read Chip Stern's review of the AH! player when I responded above. But upon reading it carefully, not just skimming, it seems that quite a few of his comments on this unit's sound are not the kind of ...
