Axpona 2024 who is going and why?
@treepmeyer Tell Danny from RAAL that the Santa Barbara guy pointed you to his booth. Maybe I can get a discount 😀
To ROON or not to ROON?
@yesiam_a_pirate What OS is your ROON core running on? Are you up to date on the latest version on both your Core and Client.  Normally you do not need to reboot after an upgrade. I had to once a few years ago. I setup ROON and Qobuz at a friend...
The new Coda S5.5 amplifier: It's a "Petite Beast"!
I have not heard the S5.5, but have owned the #8, #16, and 07x preamp. I have also discussed the S5.5 with Doug at CODA about the appropriateness of using the S5.5 with either my Yamaha NS5000 or Magnepan LRS+ speaker. After I gave him feedback on...
Axpona 2024 who is going and why?
If you have the time, go and listen to the RAAL 1995 Magna and Immanis headphones at Axpona. I just heard it earlier today. The same headphone that is going to Axpona. I took my RAAL VM-1a amp to hear them and this same model amp was shipped to Ax...
The new Coda S5.5 amplifier: It's a "Petite Beast"!
@aolmrd1241 The S5.5 is not really comparable to the #16.  Definitely with the speakers I listen to. I have 2 other amps that I think I can sell I and I am exploring that first. Though that would mean 1 system will be unplayable. @firefly627s I t...
The new Coda S5.5 amplifier: It's a "Petite Beast"!
Some additional observations on the Serene preamp. I disconnected the Serene from my office system (Magenpan LRS+ and CODA #16) and drove it down to my friends place in Ventura, CA. I wanted to hear the new RAAL 1995 Magna and Immanis headphones....
Schiit/DSD Question
PlayBack Designs (guy involved in early DSD) uses a very high DSD sampling on their DACs. I think everything is done in DSD, including PCM data. The designer invented the first FPGA DAC, so it is some complex software implementation to do all of t...
I don't get it...Exile on main Street-Blue
I was 2 years old when these albums came out. However, I noticed that I had put both Blue and Court and a Spark in my ROON library. I wanted to hear these 2 again since I love my office system now. It just sounds great. I thought Court and a Spar...
Rank the top reference DACs you've heard
@jamegla I have some of the gear you are talking about. The Serene and HPA4 are sonically very similar, contrary to some posts online saying that the Serene kills the HPA4. Love both of these preamps (I have the LA4). The LA4/HPA4 has much more us...
Stereophile review of the $30,000 tekton speakers
Zylon is the new material that Yamaha uses, and it sounds incredible. Same physical characteristics as Be but I think not poisonous like Be. The 12-inch woofer on the NS5000 is made of Zylon as is the tweeter and the midrange. Yes, I have this spe...
Not to be missed at Axpona
I just spoke with my friend Danny from RAAL-Requisite. I am making a drive to his location in Ventura, CA this Friday to have a listen to maybe the world’s best headphones, the brand new RAAL 1995 Magna and Immanis ($10k). These ones are not cheap...
What the Best Dac have you heard or owned. How could you tell it was that good.
@james633 What DAC are you using now? I still use the DAC3B in one of my systems. It is too hot on top, but I can work around that.
Streamer only
A computer directly to a DAC is almost always a no go. Though I would not be surprised if the latest PlayBack Designs DACs are not affected. Reason you do not want to hookup a general purpose computer directly to the DAC is that the electrical no...
Holo May Pre-amp
Why not consider the Holo Serene preamp which obviously should be good with the May. The Serene only adds a touch of warmth. It is a tiny amount, and you get a super silent unit. I have the Serene and love it. The Benchmark LA4 preamp is similar i...
Playback Designs MPD6 or Bricasti M21?
I have not heard either but researched both, the PDB is the most upgradeable sonically. It is FPGA based design done by the guy who invented the FPGA DAC design. The Nagra DAC that I think sells for $30k-60k is using the low-end code that Andreas...
