CDs Vs LPs Couple of things.I agree that getting excellent sound from vinyl costs more and takes more time and fiddling to attain. The low level signals from the cartridge are prone to interference and lots of cable dressing and such to eliminate hums can be...
What unknown musical artist would you like to share with your fellow audiophiles? Jazz fans should take a listen to anything by Oded Tzur (available on youtube)
Turntable /Cartridge hum 1 - try grounding to various points on the table - that causes many hums and some tables work better grounded and some not2 - try dressing the cables from the table to the preamp differently - I had a hum that I killed by moving those cables away ...
Power Purpose I ran new 20 amp, 12 ga lines from the panel to my system. It did clear up the sound a bit. YMMV - you might go to all that work and get zero improvement (I did it because the distances weren't long and I was having rewiring done anyway).
New "Media" Room Advise needed Is it a live room? What are the surfaces and coverings (e.g. drapes, if any)?
Could I be a Retail Wretch? If you owe the shop where you auditioned the gear, it is to be in on any eventual purchase if they are willing. If you decide to buy, do the research on line and then go and see the dealer and tell them what it will cost you if bought elsewhere (...
Replace CJ with new equipment There isn't a lot wrong with what you have now. The 11 is a good amp (the 11a was an improvement). You might consider upgrading the preamp (I use a CJ Premier 14).
Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open. I have an amp maintenance question, if I may.I favour amplifiers that are either Class A or at least have very rugged power supply capacity (I use several Classe DR3 VHC, a Belles A, a Rowland 5). What are the symptoms of the supply caps being on...
Drink of choice for serious listening? Like the suggestion of 1990 Angelus - lovely wine (and I still have a few bottles in the cellar). If I am listening to digital, if not a glass of wine, then a snifter of single malt, usually Laphroaig, Lagavulin, an older Ardbeg, or a Talisker.If...
What separate tube phono stage do you use ? Can't see why one would eliminate a whole array of potential candidates by insisting on tube only. Shouldn't the question be - what are some of the best sounding phono pres regardless of what devices happen to be inside them?I use a CJ Premier pho...
If you could just pick one instrument that you think sounds best on your speakers For my CLS speakers it has to be the violin (or any stringed instrument). I swear you just about hear the rosin flaking off the bow!For my main system (Wilson Maxx 2) while everything is well rendered, the low bass, particularly drum, sounds bette...
Personal vs. Market Values 1 - I have had freshly shaved white truffle in Piemonte that was almost tasteless, and I have had French black truffle that was so flavourful that only a few shards were needed to flavour a dish.2 - there are some things that some people are simpl...
Have you ever downgraded deliberately? Although I don't regard it as downgrading, I do maintain a couple of systems made up of components that I have had for many years as well as some old gear I acquired more recently.I have one system with Martin Logan CLS (original version c. 1986, ...
Is the Vinyl Revival well and growing? I would like vinyl to continue at a sufficient level of popularity to maintain production, but don't really care if it continues to increase in popularity. There are a ton of used albums available - enough to supply needs for any foreseeable futur...
WHY DO SOME AUDIOPHILES THINK YOU ARE BRAGGING WHEN YOU ARE SHARING? Some products are an inherent brag even if the owner says nothing (a rare occurrence). Drive a Viper, wear a gold Rolex, own the latest silly priced amplifier, and its existence is an implied brag. There are people that own the same products becau... |
